4 THESIS ASTRACT Diana R Rosenblum Master o Music School o Music and Dance December 01 Title: Quadrule Quartet: or a Chamber Orchestra o 16 layers Quadrule Quartet is a ourmovement ork scored or 16 layers, our rom each o the our instrumental amilies o the orchestra (ie oodinds, brass, strings, ercussion) This unique instrumentation utilizes a minimal number o musicians to create an orchestral sound, in hich the distinct timbres o the orchestra are reresented by one layer er instrument (ith certain individual layers taking on conventional doublings, ie lute/iccolo) Each movement is selcontained, ursuing its on motivic ends through novel contrauntal techniques, and is titled according to a salient trait I Contraunctus is a ugue, hose exressive reedom lies aradoxically in its rigidity; II Collage generates comlexity through an increasing density o cycling layers, variously suerimosed; III Dovetail eatures a medley o idelyvoiced toneclusters arranged in overlaing threads o melody traded in a variety o timbral colors; IV Ricochet makes thematic use o a rebounding staccato motive iv
