5 Preace Author Ken Robinson once said that "creativity is utting your imagination to ork, and it's roduced the most extraordinary results in human culture" I believe this to be undeniable In both my childhood and my adulthood I have enjoyed the imagination o others I as alays delighted to see the old Tom and erry cartoons rom the 1950's and 1960's, I thorougly enjoyed Disney movies as ell as Disney cartoons that ere aired on "The Disney Aternoon" in the early 1990's hen I as in elementary school Also, I enjoyed Chuck Palniuk's story Fight Club as ell as a hole variety o anime ith various themes, concets, stories, and characters Plus, let's not orget my neverending enjoyment o video games rom then and no These examles above, ith the addition o many others, are indeed the extraordinary results in human culture that Ken Robinson mentions And this all started ith the imagination o many individuals And thanks to imagination being brought to lie, it made eole eel, and it gave eole lie-enhancing memories, and insiration Some ere even insired enough to utilize thier on imaginations and create orlds o their on This is the theme that my iece La Petite Marie de Normandie ocuses on: imagination It is obvious that I alied my imagination to this hole ork, using symbolism throughout by using certain comosition techniques and various harmonic material For instance, ascending chords in the strings, iano and celesta to signiy going to Heaven, loud cluster chords made by the orchestra are utlizied to a 21-gun salute, and the har is being used to deict ho beautiul the titular character is Furthermore, my original story that is told in this iece deicts the imortance o ho an active imagination can be helul to one's on lie At the start o this iece, e meet our irst character, Second Lieutenant Donald "Dodger" Charleston, an oicer o the US Army 2nd Rangers sent to Normandy Beach on une 19 In the heat o battle, Dodger escaes the line o ire to lant a seed-looking rock beneath the bloodied sand, hoing and raying (in his on manically-induced imagination), that something ill gro out o this seed and i ound, make someone hay someday in that land o misery This ictional account on D-Day is resented in the iece's irst movement, The Landing The Second Lieutenant and eventually retired Lieutenant Colonel Dodger is inally laid to rest at age 95 in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania Devestated that he lost his laymate in lie, his grandson, George Charleston, ees and is even in denial that his avorite grandather has assed aay This event and the hereditary trait o vivid imaginations are ortrayed in the second movement, Funeral or a Forever-Dreaming Warrior Months ater his grandather's uneral, George and his amily heads to France or a vacation One o the laces they visit is the same beach that Dodger as 72 years beore, ighting or his lie and others' On the beach, lonely little George's imaginative mindset creates the title character, Maria, a tiny angel-like airy ho has the hysical and mental maturity o a 0-year-old oman, in his mind, and actually orms an exclusively imaginary, loving, latonic relationshi ith her in the beginning He intially "discovers" her in the same seed-like rock his grandather lanted in battle This scene takes lace in the third and titular movement Imagination is key to this hole ork And even though this edition only contains the irst three movements, the utmost imortant characters in this story are introduced and solidiy the theme o imagination or the hole ork My overall objective or this music is to send the message that imagination can be a lie-saving mental medicine or many There are thousands, i not, millions, o eole ho rely on their imagination just to make their days more bearable Think o the ones ho love their avorite comic book characters, musicians (ictional or non-ictional), or storybook characters This kind o love or eole in their mind hels eole unction ositively every day In my ork, George creates a character in his mind that loves him dearly, and it makes him very hay I believe this counts as taking care o one's sel To conclude, in the uture, the comletion o this hole ork, hich ill have 1 additional movements, ill ortray the struggle o ersonal maturity and questioning hether or not to hang on to one's imagination or "gro u", due to social ressures This articular struggle ill actually distort one's rocess o thought and also roduce chaotic scenes in the imaginitve art o one's mind Near the actual end o the 16-movement version o this iece, I ill ortray the evolution o George's imagination as ell as his sychosis he exeriences later in his adulthood For no, hoever, enjoy the beginning o this iece involving the rocess o taking care o one's sel through imagination Whenever you eel like you are in hell, create some kind o heaven in your head George does, and it saves his lie in the beginning, at least
