I enoyed learning and associating ith them. I need to thank my amily and esecially my ie, Lindsy, or all the love and suort and rayers that heled and encouraged me. They make everything in lie better and I m so grateul or them. I ould also like to thank my oet, Kenny A. Chain. 9 PROGRAM NOTE The title o this ork, Given time is meant to be less o a title and more like the beginning o a dee thought. Time is one o those things that I think humans ust don t understand and don t give very much thought to, esecially considering ho much time has already assed and ho much time let there is in the universe. Where does sace and time end And here do e (or I) it in all o it Does everything I do have any lasting imact on the eternal scheme o things The list o questions goes on seemingly orever, but ondering them has alays been stirring to me. Setting some o these thoughts and eelings to music as a ne challenge that I loved every ste o the ay. This ork sets three oems by Kenny A. Chain. Several more o his oems ere selected to be included in the ork at a later date. Each oem introduces a ne ay o looking at or thinking about the vastness o the universe, the endlessness o time, and in some cases, our otential imact or ate as a human race. And They All Danced is about an incomrehensibly slo dance that has gone on or billions o years and ill continue to go on orever. It is the dance o the galaxies as they move, tirl around, and sometimes collide ith each other. The music is slo but illed ith anxious anticiation. It is meant to give the imression o something small and docile, yet enormous and oerul at the same time ust like the driting galaxies through sace. There are a coule moments in the music here I imagined an extremely slo donbeat as i e ere listening to the dance music o the universe sloed don by a thousand times or is it sed u Seeking Contact comes rom mankind s current ersective and relationshi ith the universe. For decades no e have been robing the galaxy and listening or any kind o a resonse. It relects our innate desire to anser the question are e alone in the universe As Arthur C. Clarke amously said, both [ansers] are equally terriying. The music relects our ersistent eort to reach out in search o lie beyond this lanet and ossibly a hint o arehension at inding out the anser. Millions o Years rom No is an attemt to relect the thoughts o someone living millions o years rom no as they remember their solar system o origin. Ater having oulated the rest o the Milky Way and beyond, ould e look back ith ondness or disdain I imagine the seaker o this oem as a soiled and distracted tenty-something living millions o years in the uture ho s decided that the ne, cool, retro thing is the Oort Cloud a sherical shell o icy obects that exist in the outermost reaches o our solar system. vii
10 POETRY by Kenny A. Chain And all the Galaxies Danced It as a slo dance sloer than anything comrehensible by mere mortal humans. M1 and tirl like lovers enthralled. Dancing, merging, tirling about under billions o brilliant stars. The Milky Way dis Andromeda and sings her out and aay, beore ulling her tight again. The dance goes on above our heads though e never see, galaxies dancing or billions o years to a lilting cosmic beat. Seeking Contact Like gossamer threads reaching out e seek the stars Driven to kno, to gro, to search e ush ever outard No matter the quantum odds no matter the imossible distances We seek others o our kind, in our image relected in the stars illions o Years rom No The Oort Cloud no is cool again not in the sense o temerature though surely it's cooled a bit It's cool because ater billions o years o sreading out seed over distant galaxies and times e've turned our attention ith a sense o nostalgia to the lace here e ere born. viii
