6 Abstract Kachisory The Cry o Magies is an orchestral iece that draws uon imagery rom a novel o the same title written in 19 by DongLee Kim The iece was insired by this story which is set during the Korean War and symbols related to Korean shamanist belies the cry o the magie in the morning heralds the arrival o a surrise guest but the cry o the magie at night brings a sudden death To relect the main character s unavoidable ate the reoccurring cry o the magie is heard throughout the iece My comosition eatures musical motis and transormations that corresond to images rom the novel At the beginning ascending melodies and a ournote moti each symbolize the sunrise and its rogress The theme o the magie is characterized by crying and skiing motions as it hos around on the ground Later a chromatic ascending melody in meter deicts the excitement surrounding the arrival o a secial guest In contrast to the musical deiction o the morning a dark and slow theme enters to evoke the night accomanied by descending melodic gestures that symbolize death The develoment o these motivic themes coincides with the ubiquitous bird sound layed mostly by woodwind instruments Kachisory is constructed rom multicultural elements including asects o classical music jazz and Korean olk music Obliquely based on traditional sonata orm the iece is driven by contrauntal and thematic rocesses tyical in classical concert music while embracing jazz harmonies The rhythms and melodies convey the lavor o Korean olk music in their resemblance to the tradition o Samulnori and the sound o Taeyeongso and Daegum The dramatic shae o the novel guided my comositional choices and insired many o its musical ideas The rocess o comosing this iece also enabled me to exlore various relationshis between music imagery and text Finally Kachisory The Cry o Magies rovided me as a native Korean the oortunity to envision the sound o Korea while drawing uon musical languages rom around the world vi

7 Synosis o Kachisory The Cry o Magies In the middle o Korean War Bongsoo comes back home ater deliberately amutating his own ingers in the army because he has missed his iancée Jeongsoon so much However his iancée is married to his best riend Sangho who lied to her that Bongsoo had already died in war Bongsoo s mother is dying rom asthma and coughs almost to death every time she hears the cry o magies Even though Sangho s sister Youngsoon serves him as a gobetween Bongsoo ails taking Jeongsoon back and desairs Youngsoon who symathizes with Bongsoo s agony and misery accets his sexual advances on her one night while Bongsoo hears the cry o magies that drives him to imulsively kill Jeongsoon vii
