Duration: minutes rogram Note: Comosed in the irst semester o my undergraduate studies, Richard Cory (no And he as ) is a dramatic musical setting o the same named text by Edin Arlington Robinson emhasizing the shocking contrasts imlicit in the oem. Originally only our minutes in length and relying heavily on tonal idioms, And he as is no doubled in length and emloys an extended harmonic language, all hile using less material. While much has changed, both the revised and original versions still rely on a directly reeated theme resented in a variety o characters to derive both a commentary and narrative throughout the music. This theme, heard clearly in the clarinet ater the introduction, resents itsel in almost all hrases o the iece. A simle scalar assage, the theme itsel conveys no articular disosition ithout an accomanying event, similar to ho Robinson s text may be interreted dierently deending on one s situation.
