3 HIGH WATER MARK: SUITE OR AZZ OCTET BASED ON THE ROSE OEMS O DAID SHUMATE David von Kamen, MM University o Neraska, 011 Advisor: Eric Richards High Water Mark is a ive-movement suite or azz octet, insired y the oetry o David Shumate, rom his collection o the same name The iece is scored or trumet (douling lugelhorn), alto saxohone, tenor saxohone, tromone, male vocalist (ithout ords), iano, ass, and drums Although this instrumentation ould generally e considered a small azz grou (as oosed to a ig and), the iece is ritten in the sirit o a larger ensemle The essence o small-grou azz is sontaneous creativity, interaction and imrovisation Although imrovised solos aear in every movement o this iece, it is etter considered as a ork or "little ig and," here comosition, arrangement and orchestration are the rimary means o musical exression "Tornado" ortrays a man's ersonal turmoil ith an aggressive edaltone ostinato in the iano and ass, aired ith a driving rock groove in the drums The horns lay agged, angular igures mixed ith inding lines that deict the ath o destruction "The Blue eriod" is a reresentation o a ashed-out orld here everything is the color lue A tromone solo slis in
4 and out o dissonant harmony over a slo, luesy sing eel Near the end o the movement, a drastic texture changes deicts the arrival o Shumate's "oman in yello oots" steing o the train "Liesaving" descries a strange connection eteen to eole ater a near-death exerience An eerie, loing iano line is douled y the alto saxohone eore giving ay to a driving straight-8ths groove that uilds to a climax eore ading aay "assing Through a Small Ton," uses a heavy, straight-ahead sing eel and a ragmented, iano-driven melody to deict a man's exeriences in a rural ton he travels through The inal movement, "High Water Mark," keys on the narrator's desire to "drit donstream and see here I end u" ater a lood An u-temo groove emloys quarter-note trilets to morh into a gently singing 6/8 inale as the oet drits aay
