3 GARDEN O THE CARATHIANS: OR RELECTIVE IECES OR MIXED ENSEMLE THAT HIGHLIGHT THE DALISM O ROMANIA S EOLE, CLTRE, AND AESTHETIC David Christopher Stamps, DMA niversit o Neraska, 201 Advisor: Eric Richards Garden o the Carpathians is a collection o original compositions inspired our separate explorations o Romanian cultural elements, rural and uran landscapes, and an American perception o dualism ithin their historical aesthetic The our pieces (Țuică, Trouled Splendor, rom nknon Heights, and Modistoric) each emphasize a dierent aspect o this dichotom Țuică ocuses on the social traditions o Romania examining customar meal-time interactions that are no inluenced Western culture and commercialism Trouled Splendor acknoledges the tpical stereotpes o communism, gps lie, and povert, ut then highlights the hard-orking, curious, and motivated enlightenment that the people trul proect rom nknon Heights, ased on Carmen Slva s poem, Don the Stream, also concentrates on the resilience and strength o the Romanian people ut through the lens o the natural eaut o the alkan landscape Modistoric paints a picture o the architecture and civic design o the uran areas draing attention to the unique uxtaposition o 18 th centur ediices, communist era concrete sla uilding, and the modern glass and steel mega-structures that line the streets o ucharest This particular piece shocases an assortment o popular Romanian olk songs compiled and arranged Şaak Alicioğlu that are then extrapolated, developed, and recomposed into a progressive setting
4 Apart rom the cultural contradictions, the compositions are ashioned in an incongruous manner as ell Each piece lends acets o Romanian olk music ith azz composition sensiilities and contemporar harmonies While unctioning as independent compositions, the pieces are designed to e perormed together as the each share motivic ragments, voicing structures, and instrumentation varieties The mixed instrumentation eatures modular orchestration that allos or the development o aural colors that honor modern sensiilities and momentum hile respecting the rich musical traditions o oth Romanian olk songs and dances and earl American popular song characteristics
