5 COMMISSIONED BY The Divine Right o Kings as commissioned y the Symhonisches Blasorchester der Landesmusikschule Ötztal; Klaus Strol, director. PROGRAM NOTE This commission as very unique it s not everyday that someone asks you to rite a iece or ind orchestra eaturing three solo trumets. What on earth as I going to rite aout When I think aout trumets and hat they have symolized over the centuries, I immediately think aout anares, I think aout royalty, and I think aout that one time a e years ago that I sa the changing o the guards outside Prague Castle. For a long time, trumets have symolized oer and strength, ut rather than rite heroic, romantic assages (many comosers have already ritten hundreds o majestic ieces that gloriy leaders like this), I anted these three trumets to live in a darker orld. I anted to rite something here the trumets reresented something not raiseorthy ut something a it more dastardly, something erhas even villainous. In the Middle Ages, many kings in Euroe elieved in an idea knon as the Divine Right, hich as the idea that kings and queens ere ultimately chosen y God and thereore only had to anser to God rather than to the eole or to a Parliamentary system. There asn t anything articularly ad aout this idea until some monarchs started to ause the idea and ause their oer. For instance, King Charles I o England almost anatically elieved in his on divinity, in his on selrighteousness, that henever he disagreed ith Parliament, he simly had Parliament dissolved in order to uhold his on asolute decisions. But o course, ater King Charles arrogance eventually led to a civil ar, it also ultimately ended ith his execution. Sometime during my research into this toic, I came across a ainting o King Charles I a trile ortrait hich shos the king rom three dierent angles all on one canvas: let roile, head-on, and right roile. I immediately thought o the three solo trumets I as riting or! Together, I think they reresent the slit ersonality o a man lagued y his on huris, a man osessed ith his on sueriority.
