4 In times o ar, our armed services have very seciic duties The Navy and Marine Cors are rimarily the irst to ight the Navy rom the Sea and rom delivering the Marines to land Movement 1 o the ork is a triumhant anare that should raise thoughts o these services entering attle As a Marine, many times hen resented ith the ossiility o having to go to ar, I as alays illing ut reserved I hoe that in movement one it relays that illingness ith the right anare ut yet the thought o the individual service memers and the leadershi o the country in thoughtulness in the center section as the horn melody takes us across the sea and into the area o conlict The inal art o the movement is the realization o our rotection eing required and the aility o our services to rovide this as the anare returns and e enter the attle This is tyically a very quick occurrence and the length o the movement is meant to adhere to that idea Movement is or all air orces o the nited States Tyically, in a artime situation, the air orce ill ollo the initial movement to contact ith oming raids This movement is meant to musically deict a single aviator rom his oint o dearture to return The oening slo section is this airman s alk to his aircrat and the accelerando is reresentative o the entry to the sky and he/she goes to here the ordinance ill e droed The irst melody in the ast section is the travel and should illicit eelings o excitement ut yet right or the mission ahead Continuing, the sound screen in the oodinds and the anares elo in the rass, are the oms eing droed This leads to the height o attle ith the rising oodind lines that eventually all come together ith the ull ensemle to create a tremendous innacle to the attle I hoe everyone can gain a small it o the eeling that service memers exerience as they reach the oint o saturation during times o conlict This immediately dissolves to an unieldy o canter eeling o the mixed meter section here the ilot has reversed course to return to ase, ut can see the attle ield sloly dissolve ehind, holding the remains o the attle We continue this as the horns and saxes rovide us the sounds o the airman's return, and e enter the ast and loing sixteenths that ring the ilot on his inal aroach to ase, and the return o the slo section as the mission has ended Movement is or all ground orces The idea is that again in the rogression o ar, ater the initial attack o the Navy and Marine Cors, olloed u air camaign, the Army and other ground orces ollo on to ortiy the area This is tyically a much longer time rame Thus, the lengthening o the movement The oening is the entry to the attle ield The horns state the oening, then the second time the lo rass ring in counter to the anare We immediately hear the ercussion ring us into the attle and hear the troos marching orard This lasts quite some time ith dierent orchestrations and comositional techniques that eventually lead us into the movement to contact As the movement to contact occurs you ill hear sounds o the attleield This leads us into the actual attle as the music comes to a sustained volume, then dissiates as the attle ends Movement is or the allen The unortunate act o ar is that e alays loose many o our rave service memers This is the only movement that uses reconceived material, in that is uilt uon the hymn Nearer my God to Thee as ell as the Bach Chorale Our Father in the Kingdom o Heaven My descrition is that ater death I elieve that those o us hom have acceted Christ as our savior, ill ascend to heaven to e ith Him It is my hoe that this is the case o all service memers that e lose The movement is meant to sho the movement rom this orld to that o the heavenly orld The irst section o the movement starts this rogression and leads us to the sax quartet that rings us to the gates o heaven With a arut change the alk into heaven and the sights and sounds that are heard is rought to us Then as e aroach the throne o God the ensemle uilds rogressively until the ace o God is visile as the Bach Chorale is stated in the ull ensemle At this time the original chorale comes ack as e celerate eternity in eace This movement is also dedicated to my riend and mentor, Dr
