10 PROGRAM NOTE Baby Book sets three oems rom Chloe Yelena Miller's collection o the same name It will later be exanded into a sixmovement work The cycle exlores miscarriage, regnancy, and young motherhood Great Aunt Dora is a real erson; she is the oet's own great aunt, a dearly beloved amily matriarch This oem is a conversation between the mother and the growing child inside her Great Aunt Dora assed away beore she could meet the child Thus, the conversation is bittersweet, but ull o ondness and reminiscence It is a beautiul vignette that unites these generations "Great Aunt Dora" has the aeal o a amiliar lullaby, with enough interest in the rhythm, harmony, and orchestral color to lend a novel sound "Objects" is at its heart a lament A mother grieves her child and struggles with having no tangible means o recognizing her loss as with other deaths, which urther isolates her Several musical devices uniy this movement The chords o C minor and A Major 7 are used requently and create a sense o harmonic ambiguity A variation o the latter, A DE G, creates an even more striking, dissonant chord which colors the most dramatic, ainul moments o the work A rominent motive, here and throughout the cycle, is heard on the text "There's nothing to wear, carry" and is recalled both in owerul and quiet moments, a reminder o this roound loss "Children's Pool Game" emerges directly rom "Objects" The title ilies lighthearted amusement Indeed, ater the oening quote rom "Objects," the musical material transorms into something more layul, yet somehow disquieting The true intention o this movement reveals itsel only at its end, and it resonates in a much deeer lace in our hearts The cooser hoes this cycle will oster dialogue about miscarriage as art o the healing rocess and will recognize and celebrate women through these shared exeriences vii
