2 rologue The action begins slightly beore the irst tableau, during the introductory music It is a inter night It is snoing Katherine, a musician, alks through an urban ark There she meets a man, ohnathon, ho escorts her through a gateay into the aerie realm Tableau I: The aerie Queen s Ball The coule enter a ball hich has already begun during a ause in the dancing The various members o the court are talking animatedly to one another The dancing resumes as the musicians begin to lay a minuet The aerie Queen s entrance interruts the irst dance She directs the revelers to continue their dancing, and observes rom an ornate throne at the side o the ballroom The dancers dance an Allemande, uon hich Katherine hersel lays a variation ohnathon begins dancing to Katherine's music He dances a lively courante, hich the entire court oins At the Queen s direction Katherine dances She chooses a oxtrot Ater Katherine dances the action o the ball is susended The entire court is briely transixed as Katherine and ohnathon dance alone together, outside o even the time o the aerie Realm Ater the coule have danced the ball continues ith a Sarabande and a Gigue, but the Gigue is interruted by the arrival o invading goblins Once again the revelers stand rozen as a host o sinister creatures streams into the hall The Troll King, a creature o menacing size and terriying demeanor, arrives ith aroriate yrotechnics ohnathon rallies the aerie Queen s court to reel the invaders and or a time it looks as though he might succeed, but the Troll King seizes him ith the aid o oerul magic and vanishes into the night, taking ohnathon hostage In the atermath o the battle the aerie Queen gives Katherine an enchanted lute and laces uon her the quest o rescuing ohnathon Tableau II: The ourney Katherine leaves the aerie Realm and travels to the river, here she encounters three men laying oker hile guarding the entrance to a salvage yard ith a number o barges, and a small boat They laugh at her request or assage to the Troll King s lair and romise to bar her ay She lays a earsome lullaby on her lute lulling them into an enchanted slee As she searches about debating her course, the Riverman sees her and asks hy she has come to his salvage yard Ater some debate, she dances an alluring dance and convinces the Riverman to erry her to the Troll King s lair Tableau III: The Troll King s Lair The Troll King's minions are caering about gleeully in an odd sort o mad altz The Troll King enters ith his servants dragging ohnathon along ater him bound in heavy chains Various o the goblins, dressed in mockery o the aeries, dance about in a eering Allemande They goad ohnathon into dancing They eer at him as he dances a variation Some o the larger and more menacing creatures, ho have been standing to the sides as the goblins danced, sirl into the middle o the dance and begin to sit uon ohnathon and beat him Katherine enters in the middle o this abuse She blos a aralyzing anare uon the lute The creatures begin to attack her, but they can do her no harm as she dances reely among them She gradually ears her oonents don and deeats them The Troll King himsel stes rom his throne and begins to use his magic to subdue her, but his magic is to no avail, and ith her lute she turns it back uon him, eventually subduing hem and orcing him to dance to her ill Ater she has dran the Troll King about or a time she begins to lay a dark and mysterious music on her lute The scene once again moves outside even the time o the aerie Realm as the Troll King dances a slo sinning dance ith Katherine circling about him laying The dance becomes aster and aster until at its climax the Troll King is transormed He becomes a aerie like unto the members o the aerie Queen s court The Troll King s lair vanishes, relaced by the aerie Queen s ballroom He and his minions, also transormed, dance in celebration Eilogue Katherine and ohnathon alk back out through the gateay, leaving aerie The sno continues to all briely as they exit the stage Orchestration: To lutes ith irst lute doubling as iccolo To Oboes ith second oboe doubling as English Horn To Clarinets in B-lat ith second clarinet doubling as Bass-clarinet in B-lat To Bassoons our Horns in (The same transosition is used in both trebble and bass cle) To Truets in C ith irst trumet doubling as iccolo-trumet in A To Trombones Tuba Timani Xylohone (notated one octave bello concert itch) Glockensiel (notated to octaves belo concert itch) Celsta (notated one octave belo concert itch) Chimes (notated at itch) Snare Drum, Susended Cymbal, Giro, Bass Drum iano Strings
