3 EING O HE H Katie ellman, Candidate or the Master o Music Degree niversity o MissouriKansas City, 2016 RC ettings o the abbath is a iece ritten or large ensemble and choir. he abbath is a sacred time or es that starts sundon riday night and ends at sundon aturday night. It is a time or relection, rayer, and rest. er Hebraic tradition, the rayers are usually sung monohonically hich rovides a unity among the congregation. hese rayers are oten unveiled in strohic orm roviding an easy method to remember the melodies and lyrics to the rayer. or more comlicated rayers ith multilayered meaning, hoever, the same melody cannot convey all o the dierent meanings. choir and sinonietta instrumentation add deth to the timbral and textural sace available. he iece is in to movements. he irst movement is based on the rayer "Lecha Dodi," hich ushers in the abbath. It reers to meeting the bride, hich in this case is habbat. he rayer is in many verses. I have chosen those that are most signiicant ersonally and that orm the structure o the movement. he second movement is an interretation o the "h ma." rayer that says Hear o Israel the Lord is our God the Lord is one. he ord h ma means hear. his is an imortant ord o the rayer. I concetualized the ord to unveil over 5 minutes. he instruments reresent the sound o "sh" ith air like noises on the trings and bloing through the instruments. he choir reveals the "mm" and then the "" art o the h ma honetically. he iece becomes more rhythmic and more chaotic harmonically and rhythmically. It culminates in a cacohony commanding the listener to hear this rayer. iii
