4 Images from The Old Gringo As I read The Old Gringo, the noel by Carlos Fuentes, I found myself underlining assages of a striking ictoral or emotional nature Altogether I underlined oer fty such assages, and then it occurred to me that a musical comosition as forming I tyed out all of these assages and began mediating on them Eentually eleen little ieces ere formed, most of them ritten hile sitting on a couch ith a cat on my la They do not tell the story of the noel, but attemt to eoke asects of scenes or ideas Some are literal in nature such as the altz for the ballroom scene of No 6, and some are quite abstract such as No or No 11 The fourth iece is dedicated to the memory of comoser Lester Trimble, a good friend hose obituary I came across in the Ne York Times hile riting this moement Daid Maslanka The Old Gringo, a noel by Carlos Fuentes, is coyright 1985 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Inc The Perennial Library aerback edition as ublished by Harer Ro, Publishers, Inc, in 1986 Notes on Performance: Piano: 17, m 1: Mark octae nodes 19, mm : Mark strings to be lucked 8: Mark double-octae node If frame construction interferes, choose another string to roduce the required sounding itch 5, mm : Mark strings to be lucked Clarinet: No 8: Clarinet uses mouthiece only A searate mouthiece may be used for this section
