2 2 My irst iano quintet Minna is also the irst quintet out o a trilogy consisting o three large orm orks ith the theme Woman s Destiny. The trilogy is a commission by the Kokonainen Festival and the ucoming orks ill be remiered on the estivals o 201 and The irst quintet Minna Pictures rom the lie o Minna Canth" got its orld remiere on the 20th o August 201 at the Kokonainen Festival. It as layed by the incredible musicians Linda Suolahti, Anna Husgavel, Mari Viluksela, Sara Viluksela and Tiina Karakori. As the name says, it is a selection o images rom the turbulent and ascinating lie o the irst amous Finnish eminist Minna Canth (119). The irst movement Alku ( eginning ) is about Minna Canth s hay youth she as a very bright girl ull o lie. Her ather anted her to get the best education he could aord, and she as one o the irst omen to begin her studies at Jyväskylä Teachers Seminary, hich as the irst school in Finland to oer higher education or omen. I could once again dedicate mysel to intellectual occuations and did so ith great leasure and joy. It as as though I had begun to live again. She hoever interruted her studies and married her ormer teacher Johan Ferdinand Canth. Within the next ourteen years she bore seven children hile heling the oor, and orking as a journalist. The second movement Pysähdys ( Pause ) is about the desair I can imagine Minna elt, hen her husband died in 19 hile she as regnant ith their seventh child. She as exhausted both hysically and mentally. Ater the birth o her seventh child she as very deressed and rote in her memoir an aul orce tried to overin me to kill my youngest child. The third movement Tahto ( Volition ) is about the inner thrive o Minna. My biggest joy and seetest leasure is riting. I can t imagine ho I could live anymore, i I ouldn t be alloed to rite, Minna rote in a letter in 1. Tirelessly she rote both articles and theatre lays during the hole o her lie. She as alays a very idealistic oman ho ought or the rights o the oor, sick and those in need. She orked or las to regulate alcohol consumtion, and or las that ould ermit omen to on roerty even ater having got married. She questioned the idea that oor eole ere oor due to God s ill, and instead she imlied eoles obligation to hel the ones in need. She as also a very ell read oman ho ket hersel very ell inormed about the literature o her time. She rites in one letter What a great ar hero I ould have been, had I been born a man in a time o ar!. Due to her ighting sirit and her critical texts, she also managed to get many enemies. ut her imact on society as robably greater than that o any other oman at any time in Finland. She is the only oman ho has an on lag day in Finland March 19th, the day o equality. Minna Canth died due to heart ailure on the 12th o May 19 and the ord about her death sread ast around Finland. Her uneral as held three days later and as so ell attended that the hole cemetery outside the church as illed ith eole. The last movement Muisto ( Memory ) describes the void she had let in society through her death, but also ho she has been the beginning o a ne society here eole have more equal oortunities.
