Are you a: Novice - I definitely need to review and study this for the exam (1 or 2) Apprentice - I have a good understanding, but I m not totally confident (3 or 4) Expert - I could teach the class about this (5 or 6) Novice Apprentice Expert I can identify and distinguish between foreshadowing and flashback in a text Foreshadowing is... a) the main story of a literary work b) a play about ridiculous and absurd situations c) a cutting and often ironic remark d) clues that hint at events that will occur later in the plot 2. A long-forgotten memory came back to Peter as he drove through his old neighborhood. Mr. Smith's dog was chasing him down the street. He fell, and pain shot through his arm. 3. Mary heard the bells ring in the distance. She thought about the time not too long ago when that sound would make her break into a sprint. Now it was that time again. She was running so that she would not be late for school. Oh, how she disliked the sound of bells. 4. Mike felt as confident as ever when he started his boat engine that day. He noticed a few clouds gathering overhead, but did not worry about them. 5. Intense feeling that an audience goes through while waiting for the outcome of certain events is: a) Imagery c) Suspense d) Tone 6. After Jason accidently bumped into Ace in the hallway between class periods, Ace flashed his switchblade and told him that paybacks are nasty. 7. "The stars were like diamonds," is an example of which figurative language device? c) metaphor b) simile d) onomatopoeia 8. Underline the foreshadowing and flashback in the story excerpts:

2 Remember, Cinderella, warned her fairy godmother, you must leave the ball at midnight. If you stay later, everything will turn back as it was. Your coach will become a pumpkin again. Your gown will become rags. Promise me you will remember. Of course, I ll remember, said Cinderella, but as her coach carried her toward the ball, the warning was replaced in her mind with images of dancing and music. Now that she was a princess, Cinderella often thought back to the events that brought her to the castle. In particular, she remembered the day her father first brought the woman who would become her stepmother to their home. It was a dreary November day when Cinderella met the cold, haughty woman. Darling, said Father, speaking to Cinderella, this is your new mother. I want you to love her dearly and do everything she says. 9. Feeling of tension or anxiety 10. Interrupts the chronological order of the story 11. Suspense is created 12. In the movie, Jaws, when a young man is laying on a float in the ocean, and the camera angle is shown underwater getting closer to his legs with intense music playing in the background, this would be an example of what? 13. What is the paragraph foreshadowing? 'Peter I don't think we should jump out of a plane like this.' Allison relax I'm the King and you're my general. What could go wrong? a) Something goes wrong b) Nothing goes wrong c) Allison inherits the throne d) They jump off a plane 14. Lightening streaked across the greenish-black sky yet, the air was oddly still. When the warning siren shrieked, the family knew that they should head for the storm cellar.
