At the same time a Radiometric Survey was made of a]l of the lakes and ponds within the claims. The purpose of the latter survey was to complete assessment work requ i remonts. Pertinent details respecting this claim group, such as Location, Claim Numbers, Access, Facilities, History, Geology, etc., have been fully described in other reports to the Corpor ation and are on file with the Ministry of Natural Resources. These matters need not be repeated here. 3 Pago 2. RAniOMKTRIC SURVEY Altogether, 21,050 feet or approximately 4 miles of lakes and ponds were surveyed radiometrically. The results are almost uniformly negative - as might be expected, with a few slightly above normal readings where the water must be very shallow. Normal background is from 300 to 'loo counts per minute. TOTAL FIELD MAGNETIC SURVEY The Total Field Magnetic Survey data does not permit an increased understanding of the geology of the property either directly through obvious correlation with rock types, or indi rectly by permitting extrapolation into overburdened areas. In the writer's experience, magnetic surveys are of very little use in the Bancroft area where a correlation between pegmatite bodies and magnetic anomalies has been frequently inferred due to the magnetite content of the pegmatites. Close interval magnetic surveying (25 foot square grid) over magnetite rich pegmatites generally indicates no anomalous conditions due to the random orientation of the magnetite crystals. On the Mercier property the magnetic intensity often fluctuates by 200 to 300 percent within a 20 foot square. Under such conditions magnetic inter pretations lose all meaning. 4 Page 3 compare the two classes of magnetic surveys. Over the past several years, I have formed the opinion that Total Field Surveys were "softer" than Vertical Component surveys; that is, the Vertical Component survey seemed to give sharper contrasts and therefore could be interpreted more easily and more acoura t ei y. When one considers Mint, each magnet Sp reading is a function of the depth of overburden and the nature of the overburden as well as the magnetic field produced by the underlying rock, it is obvious that the above opinion is very difficult to establish solely on the basis of the surveys of the Mercier property. However, there is a "softening" effect in the total field results and to the writer, the vertical com ponent survey appears to be superior. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS 1. The Total Field Magnetic Survey of the Mercier property has produced results which do not materially assist in the exploration of the property. 2. The Vertical Component Magnetic Survey is likely to have more exploration use than the Total Field Magnetic Survey
