Larder Lake Mining Division Kirkland Lake Area, Ontario November 23, 1972 Timmins, Ontario Wayne E. Lunt Noranda Exploration Co., Ltd. This report on the Electromagnetic Survey.and jlagnetic Survey is submitted under the jspepial Provision^ dated October 16, 1967, for the credit of 60 assessment work days per claim^ The person in charge of the linecutting^and geophysical work was E. 2 BENOIT 3-71 immendations; Further work is warranted in order to determine the cause of the two conductive zones that were detected. Introduction: The Benoit 3-71 claim group consists of 10coritiaj.iousmining claims in the north-central portion of Benoit Township and the south-central portion of Cook Township. Originally, the property consisted of three claims L , inclusive, which were staked on the basis of an airborne EM anomaly, in an area of acidic to intermediate volcanic rocks. The geophysical work performed on these mining claims indicated that additional claims should be staked. Location: Six- of the mining claims, numbered L inclusive, and L inclusive, cover the N^ of Lot 5 and the W^ of the N^ of Lot 4, all in Concession VI of Benoit Township, Larder Lake Mining Division. The four remaining claims, numbered L and L inclusive, cover the southern most claims of Lots 4 and 5 in Concession I of Cook Township, Larder Lake Mining Division. The claim group is approximately 15 miles north-west of the town of Kirkland Lake, Ontario. Access: The property is easily reached by a gravel road which runs from Highway 11 east along the Benoit and Cook Township boundary. Topography; The area as covered by the Benoit 3-71 mining claim group is extremely flat and consists of low wet ground. Linecutting: Mr. Stuart Nauss of 419 Twelfth Street, Val d'or, Quebec, cut the lines covering the.original 3 mining claims under contract between December and January 2, The extensions to these lines which covered the additional 7 claims were also done by

3 -2- Mr. ^stuart Nauss under contract between April 4 and April ^ An E-W Base, line was cut through the middle of the property with grid lines being cut at 400 foot intervals off the Base Line and at right angles to it. The Base Line and grid lines were all chained and picketed at 100 foot intervals. A total cut to cover the additional claims making the total number of line miles on the property equal to General Geology; As the property has yet to be geologically mapped, no detailed geology is available. However, the O. D. M. geology map of the area indicates that the property is composed of acidic to intermediate volcanic rock with an E-W geological strike. The surrounding region suggests that the property may possess diabase dykes running north-south. Instruments and Sensitivity Elect romagneti c ; The electromagnetic survey was conducted using a Vertical Loop Electromagnetic unit (V.L.E.M. ), Model SS15, manufactured by McPhar ggoghysics Limited. The instrument consists of a tssjsgffijjijtyi^^ The transmitter is composed of a transmitting coil, signal generating console and motor generator. The receiver is composed of a search coil, signal amplifier, clinometer and headphones. The transmitting coil produces a primary magnetic field when it is subjected to an alternating current. If the alternating primary magnetic field comes in contact with a conductive body a current within the conductor will result. It in turn will produce a magnetic field of its own which is termed the "secondary." The direction of the resultant field (i.e. primary plus secondary) is measured at given receiving stations by using the search coil with its attached clinometer. The deviation of the resultant from the direction of the horizontal primary magnetic field is measured in degrees of dip. Readings are taken using transmitting frequencies of 5000 Hz. and 1000 Hz. The correlation of the results between the two

4 -3- frequencies gives an indication of the relative conductivity of the anomalous body. The range of penetration of the primary field is normally considered to be approximately one-half the separation distance between the transmitter and receiver; however, other factors such as conductive overburden may alter this situation. The results of the VLEM survey are shown on the prints accompanying this report. Magnetic; The instrument used was a manufactured by MgEhSE Geo^h^s j^jg The fluxgate magnetometer measures the strength of the verti oal component of the total magnetic field in units of gammas. magnetic field at any particular station will consist of the vectoral sum of the earth's magnetic field and magnetic field of any anomalous body. The later of these fields is caused by mineralization that is either naturally magnetic or is capable of possessing a secondary field which is induced by the earth's primary field. To conduct the survey a base station was established with all subsequent readings being taken relative to this value. the Base Line in this manner/ it can be used The By reading stations from which the rest of the grid lines are read at 100 ft. station intervals. In the event of a zone of anomalous magnetics (i.e., greater than 200 gamma change between stations) the station interval is reduced to 50 ft. As the earth's magnetic field fluctuates with time, it is periodically necessary to take readings at a base station to discern possible instrument or magnetic drift. Any apparent changes in the magnetic intensity which occurs during the time interval between base line checks is then applied as a progressive adjustment to the readings taken during that period of time. When contoured^ the results of the magnetic survey aid in the determination of the strike, dip and depth of an anomalous body. These results of the magnetic survey are shown on the prints accompanying this report.

5 -4- ysics; No. of VLEM Readings L.F., 573 H. F. No. of MAG. Readings The electromagnetic and magnetic surveys were conducted by B. Butlin, R. Peltoneimi, A. Mathias and B. Mercuri between the dates of February 19-25, 1972 and June 6-10, The electromagnetic survey that was conducted on Benoit 3-71 produced a series of crossovers indicating the presence of two conductive zones which will henseforth be termed as conductors A and B. Conductor A in the northeastern portion of the property crosses line 0-24E inclusive. It varies from a high frequency crossover to a dual frequency crossover with a L.F./H.F. ratio of 0.5 as seen on Line 24E. The amplitude and shape of the crossovers indicates that the conductor is near surface/ (i.e. less than 100 feet) and is probably dipping slightly to the south. Conductor B ran the entire width of the middle three claims crossing lines zero through 40E inclusive. It possessed dual frequency crossovers with L.F./H.F. ratios as large as 0.7 on line 36E. extreme length of this conductor would suggest that it is graphitic in nature. It also appears to be near surface with a relatively large vertical extent. Neither conductor A or B possessed any magnetic expression. The overall magnetic trend was North-South which is typified by anomalous zones on lines 12E, 16E and 40E. The This is in contrast to the East-West conductors. As N-S diabase dykes abound in the surrounding area, similar dykes are thej.-probable cause for. the anomalous magnetics on the property. A few high frequency crossovers are present to the south of conductor B, however, their trend can only be implied due to their rather weak response. other conductor. A N-S trending linear zone of anomalous magnetics were located on lines 12E, 16E, and 40E. It is probably the magnetic expression of a diabase dyke. 4. This report on the Electromagnetic and Magnetic Surveys is submitted under the Exploration Assistance Agreement dated December 29, 1971, between the Minister of Mines and Northern Affairs, and Noranda Exploration Co., Ltd.

8 Benoit 3-71 fiommendations - Additional claims should be staked to the south of the original group to cover the extension of the conductor located there, and additional grid lines should be cut on these claims. The new claims should be electromagnetically and magnetically surveyed, and the complete group should be geologically mapped. Any further work would be contingent to the results of the geological mapping. Introduction - The Benoit 3-71 property consists of 3 contiguous mining claims in the north central part of Benoit Township. The claims were staked on an airborn EM anomaly/ Loon 16-78, in an area of acidic to intermediate volcanic rocks. Location - The 3 mining claims, numbered L , inclusive, cover the N^ of the N^ of Lot 5, and the NV^g of the N^ of Lot 4, all in Concession VI of Benoit Township, Larder Lake Mining Division. The group is about 15 miles northwest of the town of Kirkland Lake Ontario. Access - The property is easily reached by a gravel road between Benoit and Cook Townships from Highway #11 north of Kirkland Lake. Topography at all. The ground is flat, with no topographic expression Linecutting - An E-W Base Line was cut through the middle of the property. Traverse lines were cut at 400' intervals off of the Base Line and at right angles to it. The Base Line and traverse lines were all chained and picketed at 100' intervals. In all, about 3.3 miles of lines were cut, chained, and picketed. Mr. S. Nauss of 419 Twelfth Street, Val d'or, Quebec cut the lines under contract between December 30, January 2, Electromagnetic Survey - The Electromagnetic Survey (Field and Office was performed on January 4, February 19-25, and February 27, 1972, by B. Butlin, Alex Mathias, R. Peltoneimi and B. Mercuri.

9 -2- The instrument used was a McPhar SS15 VLEM unit/ capable of operation at 1000 cycles per second, 5000 cycles per second, or both frequencies simultaneously. The equipment consists of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter is composed of a transmitter coil, transmitter console, and motor generator. The receiver is composed of a search coil, amplifier, clinometer, and headphone set. The transmitter coil is energized by an alternating current produced by the motor generator, which results in the production of a primary magnetic field. This primary magnetic field links with any conductor in its vicinity, producing an induced current which gives rise to a secondary magnetic field. At a given receiving station, the direction and magnitude of the primary field is altered by the secondary field. The direction of the resultant field is determined by means of the search coil with its attached clinometer. Measurements are made of the dip angles of the resultant field, and recorded in degrees. The plotting of the dip angles at both frequencies gives profiles which are useful in estimating the depth of the conductor axis, the dip of the conductor, and its relative conductivity. The range of penetration is normally considered to be approximately one-half the separation distance between the transmitter and the receiver, although other factors, such as the conductivity of the overburden, must also be taken into consideration. The results of this VLEM survey are shown on the prints accompanying this report. One strongly conductive zone was located, and found to extend from 1+OOS on Line 40E to 7+OOS on Line 12E. Magnetic Survey - The Magnetic Survey (Field and Office) was performed on the same dates as the Electromagnetic Survey, and by the same personnel. The instrument used was a McPhar M700 fluxgate magnetometer. This is a direct-reading magnetometer. Base readings were taken along the Base Line, and all other

10 -3- jgtedings were calculated relative to the base readings. Readings were repeatedly taken at the base control stations at periodic intervals to discern day-to-day and diurnal drift. Any changes noted in the magnetic intensities were then applied as factors, and progressive adjustments were made to each reading taken during that specific time interval. The results of the Magnetic Survey are shown on the prints accompanying this report. Most of the property displays very little magnetic relief, with a background of about 350 gammas. One N-S trending linear zone cuts through the west central part of the property/ and it displays lightly higher than background magnetic intensities. The highest magnetic intensity recorded, 705 gammas, lies within this zone at 1+50N on Line 12E. The lowest magnetic intensity recorded is 195 gammas, at 4+OON on Line 36E. Conclusions - The airborne EM anomaly was located on the ground, and was found to display strong conductivity. It does not have any direct magnetic correlation, however, because of its strength, it is classified as warranting further work. A N-S trending linear zone of higher-than-background magnetic intensities was located along line 12E, in the west central portion of the property. It may be the magnetic expression of a diabase dyke, however the property is not large enough, and hence the magnetic survey not great enough, to be certain of this. Geological mapping will be performed on the ground, and the conductor will be investigated further, contingent to the results of the geological mapping. E. A. Gallo NORANDA EXPLORATION CO., LTD.
