GEOMAGNETIC SURVEY ROTA LAKE GROUP MURPHY TOWNSHIP Introduction; On March 25, 1971 a geomagnetic survey was performed over the Rota Lake Group in Murphy Township* The property consists of one claim numbered P-27#620. Location and Access; Rota Lake is located approximately ten miles north of Timmins in Northeastern Murphy Township. Access is via Highway 655 to the Bigwater Lake Area, which is three miles west of the property by bush roads. Since the group is a water claim, only winter work is possible* Topography; Rota Lake is situated in a topographic low., surrounded by a spruce and cedar swamp* The kettled appearance to the lake, would suggest an appreciable depth of glacial overburden* However, the depth of overburden is very difficult to judge* Some areas contain less than fifty feet of overburden while two hundred feet from bedrock exposures the overburden has been found to be two hundred feet. Geology The Ontario Department of Mines Preliminary Map of Murphy Township infers that the Rota Lake area is underlain by Keewatin

- 2 - sediments. Just west of the property there is an area of volcanics, separated from the sediments along a northeast-southwest magnetic trend* This trend is presumed to map the volcanic-sedimentary contact* The sediments consist of two major types: argillites and greywacke* The volcanics, both flows and pyroclastics, are essentially andesitic to dacitic in composition* The volcanics are highly altered with a deep weathered surface. Results of alteration are evidenced in the assemblage of chlorite^ epidote, talc, tremolite and carbonate* The sediments are not as highly altered, although books of metamorphic mica are common* The argillites consist of irregularly spaced clay and mud layers, exhibiting a good cleavage* One common trait to both formations in the area is the abundance of mica (phlogopitebiotite) and finely disseminated pyrrhotite* Bedrock geology in the area indicates that the structure in the vicinity is very complex* Strikes, dips and topping directions suggest that the area has suffered two phases of folding. The first phase has a near east-west axial plane which is refolded by a later north-south phase. The volcanics are the oldest rocks, such that the sediments would surround the volcanic area as a basin and dome type configuration, A general north to northeast trend is most prominent due to the effects of the second phase of folding* Previous Work; No previous work is recqrjjejlon the Hollinger property and there are no bedrock exposures in the immediate area to provide any

- 3 - surface information. The surrounding area wfts first mapped in 1964 by S. A. Ferguson for the Ontario Department of Mines* Most contacts are assumed through the magnetic associations of different rock types. Greywacke and argillite sediments are found about one half mile south of Rota Lake* The volcanic area to the west was designated as trachyte and trachytic breccia, although our classification disagrees with this. Although the mica and alkali feldspar characterize trachytic rocks, the complete assemblage of chlorite with epidote, alkali feldspar, quartz, sericite, zoisites and carbonates are more diagnostic of an altered andesitic lava* This interprets the alkali feldspar as a metamorphic product and the mica as a prograde metamorphic equivalent of chlorite* The presence of tremolite and horneblend also suggest a rock more basic than a trachyte* From further thin section work no trachytic textures were recognized which are often characteristic of trachytic rocks* In 1964* Texas Gulf Sulphur worked on three, four claim groups in the vicinity, drilling five holes* One hole was drilled in the north half of Lot 4 Con, V encountering greywacke, serpentinized basics and andesitic breccia* The conductor was attributed to a graphitic tuff horizon containing pyrite and pyrrhotite. The remaining four holes were drilled on the south half of Lot 5 Con. VI, The first hole was stopped to change the bearing but had already encountered dacite and andesite. The second hole, drilled on the corrected bearing intersected dacite, rhyolite and andesite with minor pyrite and pyrrhotite. Further north, the third hole encountered pillowed

andesite and rhyolite tuff, The andesite was characterized by pyrite mineralization in the selvage zones. The -fourth hole was drilled in an easterly direction, opposite to the bearing of the three previous holes. This hole encountered rhyolite and graphitic tuffs, and sediments with pyrite and pyrrhotite mineralization* Also in 1964, National Explorations conducted magnetic and electromagnetic (VEM) surveys over four claims northwest of Rota Lake, No electromagnetic conductors were outlined and the magnetic survey showed only east-west trends* In 1964j Victoria Algoma Mineral Company Limited held sixteen claims, consisting of four, four claim groups west of Rota Lake. Three drill holes ar.e recorded by Victoria Algoma before the property was optioned by Mcintyre Porcupine Mines Limited in 1965* The first Victoria Algoma hole encountered andesitic and acid breccias or agglomerates interbedded with slate and greywacke sediments* The hole averaged approximately five percent mineral mostly pyrite and pyrrhotite with minor chalcopyrite and sqdralerite. The second hole intersected slates and greywackes with some acid pyroclastics. There is no mention of mineralization in the volcanics, but the sediments average ten percent sulphides-pyrite and pyrrhotite with minor chalcopyrite and sphalerite. The third hole is very similar containing andesitic agglomerates, slates and disseminated sulphide mineralization. Mcintyre Porcupine Mines Limited, upon optioning the properties, performed an airborne electromagnetic survey with later

. 5 - ground electromagnetic, magnetic and gravity surveys* Several conductors were outlined and six drill holes were emplaced in the area* The first hole, in the N^ Lot 5, Con. VI, encountered andesitic flow and tuff with some greywacke and slate sediments* The entire rock was characterized by fine disseminated pyrrhotite with some pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite locally. Two holes encountered only rhyolite with only minor pyrrhotite and pyrite* The remaining two holes drilled in this group contained andesitic flow, agglomerate and breccia with some rhyolite. There is no mention of mineralization present* The rhyolite is probably a siliceous sediment, which satisfies the description of sediments previously encountered by Hollinger* One hole was placed on the S Lot 6 Con. VI intersecting andesitic flow and agglomerate with some graphitic tuff* In Noranda worked on the three, four claim groups previously held by Texas Gulf Sulphur* They conducted a magnetic and electromagnetic (VEM) survey outlining four conductors with weak to no magnetic correlation. There is no record of diamond drilling* Personnel; The field survey was performed by R, Collins of Timmins. on a contract basis with Hollinger Mines Limited* Drafting of the plans and interpretation of the survey was done by the author. Instrument Used; The survey was conducted using an MZ-4 torsion wire magnetometer (serial number 4539) manufactured by the A.B.E.M* Company

. 6 - of Stockholm Sweden* This magnetometer is a variometer for measuring the vertical component of the earth*s magnetic field. This magnetometer has a sensitivity of 9*9 gammas per scale division*. The readings are taken by rotating a micrometer screw until the torque applied to a torsion wire, which holds a magnet, is sufficient to return the magnet to a zero position* Graduations on the micrometer drum are noted during an observation* At every station it is necessary to level the tripod- mounted instrument and orient it in a constant direction to minimize the effects of improper levelling adjustments* Survey Method! All of the instrument readings were obtained along measured picket lines, spaced to provide maximum lake coverage* Individual stations were taken at one hundred foot intervals along the picket lines which trend at^45 dagj*ee,sj, The data was organized such that the readings were converted from scale divisions to gammas and then plotted on the grid syg^gjiu Due to the low magnetic susceptibility, a contour interval of ten gammas was chosen and then the plotted data was contoured to establish the magnetic trend* A total of 153 readings were obtained from 136 stations over 1*68 miles of picket line* The number of stations includes Base Stations taken over the 1880 feet of Base Line*

- 7 ~ Results of the Survey; The geomagnetic survey conducted does not reveal any anomalous magnetic zones. The small, individual highs and lows that appear to contradict the trend may be discarded upon considering the sensitivity of the instrument. The somewhat north-south trend is consistent to other properties west of Rota Lake, and may possibly be related to the second phase of folding* The magnetic responses have been compared to other nearby surveys, indicating that the lake is underlain by sediments, similar to those previously mentioned. Conclusions: Since the geomagnetic survey provides very little information about the property, additional geophysical methods should be employed before final assessment. Although there are no anomalous magnetic responses, intersections of sulphides both disseminated and near massive, would suggest that more geophysical programmes be carried out* Bibliography; Ontario Department of Mines Preliminary Map P*255 "Murphy Township"; 1964j S. 10 SUBMISSION OF GEOLOGICAL, GEOPHYSICAL AND GEOCHEMICAL SURVEYS AS ASSESSMENT WORK In order to simplify the filing of geological, geochemical and ground geophysical surveys for assessment work, the Minister has approved the following procedure under Section 84 (8a) of the Ontario Mining Act. This- special provision does not apply to airborne geophysical surveys. If, in the opinion of the Minister, a ground geophysical survey meets the requirements prescribed for such a survey, including: t ' (a) substantial and systematic coverage of each claim (b) line spacing not exceeding 400 foot intervals (c) stations not exceeding 100 foot intervals or, (d) the average number of readings per claim not less than 40 readings it will qualify for a credit of 40 assessment work days for each claim so covered. It will not be necessary for the applicant to furnish any data or breakdown concerning the persons employed in the survey except for the names and addresses of those in charge of the various phases (linecutting contractor, etc.). It will be assumed thaf the required number of man days were spent in producing the survey to qualify for the specified credit. f Each additional ground geophysical survey using the same grid system and otherwise' meeting these requirements will qualify for an assessment work credit of 20 days, A geological survey using the same grid system, and meeting the requirements for submission of geological surveys for maximum credits will qualify for an assessment work credit of 20 days. If line cutting has not previously been reported with any other survey and is reported in conjunction with the geological survey a credit of 40 days per claim will be allowed for the survey. Similarly j a geochemical survey using the same grid system with the average number of collected samples per claim being not less than 40 samples, and meeting the requirements for the submission of geochemical surveys for maximum credits, will qualify for an assessment work credit of 20 days. If line cutting has not previously been reported with any other survey and is reported in conjunction with the geochemical survey a credit of 40 days per claim will be allowed for the survey. Credits for partial coverage or for surveys not meeting requirements for full credit will be granted on a pro-rata basis. If the credits are reduced for any reason, a fifteen day Notice of Intent will be issued. During this period, the applicant may apply to the Mining Commissioner for relief if his claims are jeopardized for lack of work or, if he wishes, may file with the Department, normal assessment work breakdowns listing the names of the employees and the dates of work. The survey would then be re-assessed to determine if higher credits may be allowed under the provisions of subsections 8 and 9 of section 84 of the Mining Act. If new breakdowns are not submitted, the Performance and Coverage credits are confirmed to the Mining Recorder at the end of the fifteen days.
