INTRODUCTION A ground magnetic survey was carried out on the Abacus ground from July 24 to August 4, 3.959* to attempt to trace the northwest continuation of a magnetic zone of milphides and minor magnetite on the adjoining ground to the east owned by Norado Mines Limited. The survey was carried out by Modern Geophysics Limited, Toronto, under the supervision of W. J. Matthews, P. ling. The instrument used was the Sharpe Model A-2 magnetometer having a scale constant of 20 gammas per scale division. The total number of miles surveyed was 20 miles and the number of stations established was OF TILE MAGNETIC SURVEY The ground magnetic survey showed two distinct magnetic trends striking approximately N60W. These two trends or "arms" were interpreted as two bands of basic volcanics with interbedded tuff which form the limbs of a westerly plunging syncline. Since a sulphide showing on the Korado ground immediately to the east lies within volcanics and tuffs, the implied presence of these same rock types to the west on Abacus ground is significant. It was recommended that a followup electromagnetic survey be carried out over these trends with a followup drilling program if any E.M. conductors were located. BREAKDOWN OF MAH-DAYS 1. 4 - 2 - ( The Abacus ground is mostly covered by swamp and muskeg. Only two outcrops, both Precambrian in age, were gound. However, from similar geological and geophysical surveys carried out by the writer on Norado ground, a number of conclusions were made by extrapolation and interpretation of the magnetic and geological surveys' results. The area is underlain by Precambrian rocks of intermediate to basic Keewatin - type volcanics and tuffaceous sediments, Algoman - type quartz feldspar porphyry, and graniitic intrusives and Matachewn-type quartz diabase intrusives. Table of Formations Matachewan- type-quartz diabase Algoman-type-granite and quartz feldspar porphyry Keewatin-type - tuffaceous sediments intermediate to basic volcanics From surface geology on the adjoining property and from extrapolation of the magnetic data, it appears that the volcanics and tuffs have been folded into a northwest plunging syncline which strikes approximately N60W. These rocks have generally been highly altered by shearing and/or silicification by the Algoman granitic intrusives. The volcanics, of intermediate to basic composition, are dark-coloured and fine grained. Intercalated with the volcanics are tuffs in beds up to ^" in width. These rocks strike generally in a northwest direction. In places where the rocks have been altered by the Algoman intrusives, the volcanics resemble Rhyolite and appear to grade into hybrid granite in proceeding toward the granitic intrusives. The Al.po'uan-type acid intrusives are composed of quartz feldspar porphyry and granite. The porphyry usually has a fine-grained dark brown matrix with phenocrysts of pink orthoclase up to -^ i n width arid quartz eyes spread liberally throughout the rock. For the most part, the granite is pinkish, and it -J;; porphyritic- in places. Near I its contact with the volcanics, it grades into a fine-textureu pale green hybrid granite. She Matachewan quartz diabase is typically dark coloured having randomly-oriented plagi oclascs. The texture of this rock type r;rc.do* f rori fine to medium grained. STRUCTURAL The volcanics and tuffs appear to be folded into a westerly-plunging syncline, the axi of which strikes approximately N60u. Intruding the volcanics on the outer flanks of, as well at; within, the synclinal basin are quartz feldsp: ;- porphyry nd granite. Intruding all of these rocks and having the appearance 01 ^ rxiig-dike structure is quartz diabase which is probably post-mineralization. Two northeast-trending faults are implied by the magnetic data. The easterly one, on Norado ground, is. represented by a creek. The westerly one is based wholly oh implications from the magnetics. Both disrupt the continuity of the magnetic trends. SUMMARY OF 'uohk CJMPjPKD To date, the only work carried out on the Abacus Mines property are the magnetometer and geological surveys.
