4 Summary A detailed investigation was done in the Black Sturgeon Area during May and June 1983, following the discovery of radioactive veinlets during The investigation consisted of linecutting, ground magnetometer and VLF-EM surveys, detailed geological mapping, stream geochemistry and overburden stripping. At the moment the results obtained are quite negative and would indicate that the occurrence itself would not have any economic potential.

5 1. 1 INTRODUCTION AREA The Black Sturgeon Lake claim block is composed of 28 contiguous mining claims which are located at roughly 5 km to the northeast of the southern end of Black Sturgeon Lake, Mikinak Lake Township, Thunder Bay Mining Division, Ontario, The claim block is quite accessible from the Town of Thunder Bay by the Trans-Canada highway (11 and 1) and adjoining gravel road from the small municipality of Hurkett. 1.2 OBJECTIVE The main objective was to assess the possible presence of an economic concentration of uranium in the area of Black Sturgeon Lake following the discovery of radioactive veinlets associated with an iron formation during DISPOSITION (Fig. 1) Present Status: No. of Claims 28 Acreage Claim No TB 6098 to TB 61A3 to TB to TB to Township Mikinak Lake Mikinak Lake Mikinak Lake Mikinak Lake PREVIOUS ACTIVITIES GOVERNMENT-ACTIVITIES Togograghic Magging The Black Sturgeon Lake Area is covered by the following topographic maps: N.T.S. RESULTS l Geonic EM-l6 l 5 Scintrex MP2 proton free precession magnetometer Saphymo SPP-2 scintillometer l Urtec spectrometer 5.l GEOPHYSICS 5 VLF-EM-Survey^Over -the Black Sturgeon Lake Grid (see Map 2) The survey was done using a Geonic EM-16 instrument. The northwest lines were done using the Cutler (Maine) frequency and the northeast lines using the Annapolis (Maryland) frequency. Two NW trending VLF anomalies were located in the central and in the western part of the grid and may represent either fracture systems or more porous pegmatitic dykes. These zones are correlated with zones of increased magnetic response. The strongest VLF anomalies of the crossover type occur at the contact between the Logan sill and the archean basement. These anomalies are believed to be caused by a weathered? zone at the base of the sill. The bands of iron formation cause significant VLF anomalies, observed mainly on the quadrature component. 5.2 Magnetometer Survey Over^he Black Sturgeon Lake^Grid (see Map 3) The survey was done using a Scintrex MP2 proton free precession magnetometer. During the survey, only corrections for diurnal variations were done. From the magnetic data three NE trending bands of probably magnetite iron formation (width less than 5 m) can be outlined. The extension of these bands under the diabase in the east of the grid is masked due to the irregular magnetic response of the Logan sill. Scintillometer Survey Over the Black Sturgeon Lake Grid (see Map ) The survey was done using a Saphymo SPP-2 scintillometer (carried at waste level). No anomalous values were recorded during the survey and the background recorded over the various lithologies was: Logan diabase 30 c/s Metasediment/metavolcanic 30-0 c/s Granite 60-5 c/s Pegmatite c/s Higher background could be recorded over outcrop area and cluster of boulders.

9 STREAM GEOCHEMISTRY (see Map 5) A total of stream sediment samples was taken on the grid area. The average content was 0.8 ppm with a standard deviation of 0.63 ppm 113Og. The highest value found on a single sample was 2.0 ppm UjOg. No anomaly was found to occur on the grid area. A complete description and the location of the samples taken are given in Appendix 2. ^LOGICAL MAPPING (see Map 6) The Black Sturgeon Lake grid area was mapped in detail during May and June Unfortunately due to poor outcrop exposure, the actual geological contact was not observed and had to be inferred from magnetometer and field interpretation. On the north side of the grid, the area is composed dominantly of hornblende granite gneiss in contact near line 2OfDON with a medium to coarse grained diabase (Logan sill). The foliation on the granite gneiss has a direction of 500 to 600 with a dip varying from 65O to 80O to the southeast. On the south side of the grid the area is composed of a band of metasedimentary and metavolcanic rock. Due to poor outcrop exposure a detailed differentiation of both units was not possible and the band composition had to be generalized on the map. The dominant metasedimentary rock was a biotite-quartz-feldspar gneiss (sometimes garnitiferous) which could host an iron formation and the dominant metavolcanic rock was a dark green amphibolite which could also host an iron formation. The foliation on both rock types had an orientation of 50O to 60O with a dip of 65 O to 80O to the southeast. The band was often cut by pegmatite dykes (often radioactive) near its contact with the hornblende granite gneiss. The granitic, metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks are in contact with the Logan diabase on the east side of the grid area. 5. OVERBURDEN ^RIPPING ( see MaPs 1 and ) From May 2 to June, 1982 the overburden covering the area where some radioactive veinlets were found in 1981 was removed by a bulldozer over a length of about 100 meters and a width of about 20 to 25 meters by Gordon Richards Sales of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The outcrop was afterwards cleaned by Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited personnel. The exact location of the area stripped is shown on Map 1. Detailed geological and scintillometer surveys (using a Saphymo SPP-2 scintillometer at waste level) were conducted over the stripped area and the results are shown on Map. The radioactive veinlets were located in a band of metavolcanic rocks (amphibolite?) hosting an iron formation and situated between two bands of metasediment (quartz-biotite-feldspar gneiss?). Some radioactive pegmatites (values of up to 5000 c/s SPP-2 were recorded) are cutting through the metasediment and metavolcanic at both ends of the stripped area. The foliation on both rock units had an orientation of about 50 to 60O and

10 - 5 - was dipping from 65 to 5 to the southeast. The area was also characterized by two fault systems, the first one having an orientation of about and dipping 80O to 90O to the northeast while the other had an orientation going roughly to the north (the dip was difficult to estimate), The radioactivity was generally found in NW trending fractures. Although these fractures were cutting through both the metavolcanic and the meta sediment, only the portion contained in the metavolcanic hosting the formation (composed of hematite, magnetite and minor pyrite) was found to be radioactive and values ranging from a few hundred c/s (SPP^-2) to > 15,000 c/s (SPP-2) were recorded along them. The dimensions of the radioactive fractures were a few millimeters to a few centimeters wide by a few meters in length. Some veinlets having a similar setting were also found on the grid near station 1+25N/22+15E and l-f25n22f25e. 6. CONCLUSION The results obtained on the Black Sturgeon Lake claim block are negative so far. The radioactive fractures that were discovered are too restrained in size to have an economic potential. Also, the EM-16 survey failed in finding any significant structures that could host a possible uranium deposit and prospection and stream geochemistry have failed in finding any new zone of significant radioactivity or mineralization. 27 Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Notice of Intent for Technical Reports *5082 An examination of your survey report indicates that the requirements of The Ontario Mining Act have not been fully met to warrant maximum assessment work credits. This notice is merely a warning that you will not be allowed the number of assessment work days credits that you expected and also that in approximately 15 days from the above date, the mining recorder will be authorized to change the entries on his record sheets to agree with the enclosed statement. Please note that until such time as the recorder actually changes the entry on the record sheet, the status of the claim remains unchanged. If you are of the opinion that these changes by the mining recorder will jeopardize your claims, you may during the next fifteen days apply to the Mining and Lands Commissioner for an extension of time. Abstracts should be sent with your application. If the reduced rate of credits does not jeopardize the status of the claims then you need not seek relief from the Mining and Lands Commissioner and this Notice of intent may be disregarded. If your survey was submitted and assessed under the "Special Provision-Performance and Coverage" method and you are of the opinion that a re-appraisal under the "Man-days" method would result in the approval of a greater number of days credit per claim, you may, within the said fifteen day period, submit assessment work breakdowns listing the employees names, addresses and the dates and hours they worked. The new work breakdowns should be submitted direct to the Lands Management Branch, Toronto. The report will be re-assessed and a new statement of credits based on actual days worked will be issued.
