Magnetic data suggest the presence of a northerly trending diabase dyke cutting felsic vol canics or sediments. ne electromagnetic response was recorded over the pro perty. The source of the response is doubtful and limited ground geophysical surveying is suggested to resolve the causative source of the conductor.

INTRDUCTIN A combined helicopter-borne electromagnetic and magnetic sur vey was performed by Aerodat Limited over a group of 4 claims within Carman township on May l, The purpose of the survey was to define possible areas of base metal and gold mineralization and as an aid to geological map ping within this part of the Archean greenstone belt. II. LCATIN AND ACCESS The survey area is located in the northwest corner of Carman township in the District of Cochrane, ntario. Figure l shows the survey location. Access to the property is possible by boat from Nighthawk Lake into the Redstone River. The claims are located south of the Redstone River about 1.6 kilometres up-stream from Nighthawk Lake. Figure 2 presents a claim location map. III. EXPLRATIN HISTRY AND GENERAL GELGY Previous Work: No work on the present Amax claims was found in the assess ment files nor was there any evidence of previous field work. The Nighthawk Lake area was mapped in by E. J. Leahy of the.d.m. (Map 2222). n this map, the Amax claims area geology is unknown. Regional Geology: The volcanic rocks of the Timmins area consist of the older Deloro Group and the younger overlying Tisdale Group.

7 2 - The Deloro Group is confined to a large domal structure centred in Shaw township. It grades from andesite and basalt flows in the lower portion to dacite and rhyolite pyroclastics near the top. A major change in volcanism marks the beginning of the Tisdale Group, the Lower Volcanic Formation of which is marked by serpentinized ultramafic flows. The Destor-Porcupine Fault is the major structural feature in the area, along with the Porcupine Syncline to the north and the Shaw Dome to the south. Property Geology: Geological surveys were performed by Amax (Lickley, 1981) in No outcrop was found in or around the claim area in this sur vey, therefore the geology of the area is not known. IV. SURVEY EQUIPMENT AND PRCEDURES Survey equipment consisted of a dual frequency Aerodat/Perle electromagnetic system operating at 940 Hz and 4250 Hz, a Barringer AM-1Q4 proton precession magnetometer, an Aerodat/Perle data acqui sition system, a Hoffman radar altimeter, a Geocam 35 mm flight path camera and a Barringer 8-channel analogue recorder. This system was installed in a Bell Jet-Ranger helicopter. The survey was flown at a line spacing of 150 metres. Survey airspeed averaged about 120 kilometres per hour and the electromagne tic sensor was maintained at an average terrain clearance of 40 metres and the magnetometer sensor at a clearance of 55 metres. Survey navigation was based on photo-mosaics at a scale of 1:15,000. Survey lines were visually navigated and fiducial points manually recorded corresponding to recognisable terrain features. Flight paths were finally verified by comparison of the 35 mm tracking film with the mosaic.

DATA PRESENTATIN The airborne magnetic and electromagnetic results are presented in Maps l and 2 at a scale of 1:15,000. Recovered flight lines are shown, together with principal topo graphic features and claim boundaries. In-phase and quadrature electromagnetic readings (at the 940 Hz frequency) are plotted as profiles along each flight line, using an amplitude scale of l ppm of the primary field equal to l mm. The zero level for each trace is set using the background observed at the end of each line. The locations of significant anomalous responses are shown as a circle with the in-phase amplitude displayed in ppm and the computed apparent conductivity-thickness (et) shown by a graphic representation. For ease of comparison, the derived e-t value is divided into 10 ranges (as shown on the inset) and the range and not the actual value is indicated on the map. While high ot values are generally associated with good bedrock conductors such as graphite or massive sulphides and low values with overburden sources, anomaly amplitude, shape, persist ence and magnetic association are equally important in the subsequent evaluation of the A.E.M. anomalies. Individual zones of interest have been outlined and numbered. The interpreted axis of a conductor is indicated by a dash line. Aeromagnetic data are presented in Map l in computer contoured plan form. A nominal contour interval of 20 gammas has been employed. No filtering has been carried out on the magnetic data.

9 VI. DISCUSSIN F RESULTS Magnetic Survey: The magnetic data are dominated by a narrow, northerly trending dyke-like response which displays the greatest local magnetic relief of up to 200 nt. It is believed that this response is due to a dia base dyke. verburden depth appears to be uniform (of the order of 50 metres) across the property. The magnetic gradient associated with the diabase dyke effect ively masks more subtle magnetic expressions over the property. The relatively subdued magnetic pattern over the remainder of the property may suggest felsic volcanics or sediments. Electromagnetic Survey: Within the area of the claim group, only one conductive res ponse was recorded. The one-line (line 35) conductor is weak and poorly conductive, displaying a broad quadrature response. This broad response suggests the presence of an overburden component with in the electromagnetic data which leaves doubt as to the causative source of the response. n the basis of limited strike extent and anomaly shape, the conductor is interpreted to have an overburden source. A weak, two-line (lines 29 and 30) conductor exists in the vicinity of the northeastern claim post of the group and extends off the property to the east.

10 VII. CNCLUSINS In an area of poorly known geology, the magnetometer data have defined the presence of a northerly trending diabase dyke within sediments or felsic volcanic rocks. The one line electromagnetic response recorded during the survey is considered a doubtful bedrock conductor. A limited amount of ground geophysical surveying (magne tometer and horizontal loop electromagnetics) in the vicinity of the airborne electromagnetic response is suggested to ascertain the source of this feature.
