3 -11- Summary The two claims near Moyneur Lake in Cairo Township are underlain by metasedimentary, mafic and felsic intrusive rocks. The northwestern portion of claim L?5?83^ is underlain by metasedimentary rocks consisting of arkose and rare conglomerate. Red syenite porphyry intrudes the metasedimentary rocks in the central portion of claim L 75783^ and the northwestern corner of claim L Both arkosic and syenitic rocks are intruded by Matachewan diabase dikes. Northeasterly trending, south dipping conglomerate of the Cobalt Group underlies the remainder of the property. The Cobalt sediments are relatively steeply dipping (70 0 S) on the west side of Moyneur Lake whereas they dip shallowly on the east side (from 15 O to 50 0 S). This suggests the presence of a northerly trending fault in the area now occupied by Moyneur Lake.

4 -111- Conclusions and Recommendations 1. The presence on the property of red syenite porphyry, which is associated with gold and silver deposits in the Matachewan area (Lovell, 196?), warrants further work, especially prospecting and sampling. 2. Magnetic and VLF - EM surveys should be done to further delineate the rock units and locate potential fault zones. 3. A number of old filled in trenches were located in the metasedimentary rocks. These should be cleaned out, mapped and sampled. 4. The mineral potential of Archean rocks in the southern portions of the claims cannot be fully determined by geological mapping since they are covered by Cobalt sediments. Geophysical and geochemical surveys may help outline possible drill targets.

5 -1- Introduction Two unsurveyed claims owned by Comstate Resources Ltd., Suite 901, th St. S.W., Calgary, Alberta, were mapped from September 12th to 15th, The claims are numbered L and L Field Method The claims were mapped by running lines 400 feet or less apart from one claim line to another. Outcrops were outlined by pace and compass method. Tree types, glacial and cultural features were noted. A total of seven rock samples were collected and assayed for gold and arsenic. The assay results are not available at the time of writing. Location, Access and Topography The two claims are about two miles northeast of the town of Matachewan, Ontario. They are in Cairo Township, Larder Lake Mining Division, District of Timiskaming. Matachewan is about 35 miles southwest of Kirkland Lake, via Highway 66. Claim L is accessible by a dirt road which branches north from Highway 66 and goes through a gravel pit, near the junction of Highways 65 and 66. The southern boundary of claim L is approximately 600 feet north of an old road connecting the Municipal garbage dump to Moyneur Lake. Eskers are the highest topographic features on the property. Large areas of outcrop

6 -2- are scattered across the claims with intervening low, swampy ground. A large beaver pond covers the northwestern portion of claim L?5?83^. Acknowledgements The capable assistance of J. Previous Work Following the discovery of gold in 1916, the Matachewan area was mapped by Burrows (1918, 1920), Cooke (1919) and subsequently by Dyer (1935) and Lovell (196?). Although several trenches were located in the field, there are no current assessment records available concerning the nature or extent of any exploration work undertaken on the Comstate claims. Regional Geology The Matachewan area borders the northwest margin of the Round Lake Batholith, and is on the south limb of a major synclinorium, the axis of which trends westerly, approximately seven miles north of the area (Pyke et al, 1973). A large pluton of syenite, the Cairo Stock, underlies the northeast portion of Cairo Township. Volcanic rocks of komatiitic, tholeiitic and calc-alkalic affinities trend westward across Cairo and Powell Townships, but have not as yet been mapped in sufficient detail to be accurately delineated. Intercalated with the volcanic rocks are thick

7 -3- sequences of sedimentary rocks. It is the contact zones of the more southerly sedimentary sequence with the underlying volcanics, in association with syenitic intrusions, which has formed the focal point for the known gold mines in the area. The north-trending Matachewan diabase dike swarm intrudes the Archean rocks and has been dated at 2485 m. y. (Fahrig and Wanless, 1963). Flat-lying to steeply dipping Proterozoic sediments of the Cobalt Group unconformably overlie the Archean rocks. A number of major faults traverse the Matachewan area, notably the Larder Lake Fault zone and the Montreal River Fault. The easterly-trending Larder Lake break is in proximity to numerous gold camps throughout its strike length; notably those of Kirkland Lake, Larder Lake, Noranda, Cadillac, Malartic and Val d'or. The exact position of the fault through the Matachewan area is uncertain, but is believed to be as depicted on Figure 1. Furthermore, the Montral River Fault, which traverses the Matachewan area, shows a spatial relationship to a number of mines or camps s for example, Kidd Creek, Timmins and Elk Lake. Numerous other northerly-trending faults are known in the Matachewan area, many of which are filled by diabase dikes. Property Geology The northwestern portion of the property is underlain by metamorphosed sediments consisting of arkose and rare conglomerate, intruded by a body of syenite in the north-

9 -5- eastern portion of the property. Diabase dikes intrude both the arkose and syenite. The southeastern portions of both claims are covered by northeasterly trending Cobalt Group conglomerate. Table l lists the rock units in Chronological order. Arkose and Conglomerate The northwestern corner of claim L 75783** is underlain by very fine grained, massive to locally foliated arkose. It is buff to light grey on weathered surface and dark grey on fresh surface. It generally contains about one percent 'fine-grained disseminated pyrite, but locally contains up to 5# fine to coarse-grained pyrite. One outcrop of conglomerate was observed, consisting of felsic clasts up to 2.5 inches in diameter in fine to medium-grained, grey felsic matrix. The arkose locally displays easterly-trending foliation but bedding was not observed in outcrop. Felsic Intrusive Rocks In the northwestern corner of claim L , locally feldspar phyric syenite is exposed. It is medium to coarsegrained, pink with dark green spots on both weathered and fresh surfaces. It consists of 60# to 75# pink potassium feldspar as equant to tabular crystals; I Qfo to 15# dark green, fibrous, tabular to accicular randomly oriented amphibole crystals; 5# to 10# locally lath-shaped white plagioclase crystals? and accessor y fine-grained quartz and pyrite. The syenite generally has interlocking to granitic

11 -7- texture but locally is porphyritic. It is locally intruded by dikes of a fine-grained and more felsic phase of the syenite, containing 5# to 10# mafic minerals. Two mafic phases of the syenite occur in a trenched outcrop on claim L , southeast of the beaver pond. Both phases are strongly magnetic. One phase is fine-grained, buff on weathered surface, with large dark green acicular mafic minerals, probably amphibole, now recrystallized to chlorite. The other phase is medium to coarse-grained, dark brown-gray on weathered surface, containing acicular to lath-shaped randomly oriented feldspar crystals up to 0.5 inches long. Matachewan Diabase Dikes Matachewan diabase is exposed in two outcrops on claim L A magnetic, medium to coarse-grained diabase dike that is dark grey-green on fresh and brown on weathered surfaces, intrudes arkose. The multiphase syenite is intruded by plagioclase glomerophyric diabase. It is magnetic with plagioclase crystal aggregates up to 0.75 inches long in a medium-grained matrix. Cobalt Group Metasedimentary Rocks The southeastern portion of claim L and most of claim L are underlain by northeasterly trending, south dipping Cobalt Group metasedimentary rocks. The most widespread unit is conglomerate with rounded granitic, mafic volcanic, vein quartz and syenite clasts up to three feet in diameter in fine-grained, greenish grey argillaceous matrix.

12 -8- Interbedded with conglomerate is rare pink, hematite stained sandstone, that shows local graded bedding, giving a south facing top direction.
