Burrows in A r eports, the most recent, 0PM Vol. 35, Part 3, 1926, Dr. li, S, Moore examined the Miller Lake Basin in 1954 and publi shed a report on the Gowganda Silver Area, ODM Vol. 64, Part 5, in 1955, Geological mappinp o f t he claims adjoining to the north was completed J ri 1961 by H. Pollak; and his report on the Lost Lake Property, as v/elj as the above mentioned reports, were used as references in preparing this paper* OPERTY.,,. Ontario, ft S f o 1 3 ovvs : MR WU MR MR These claims were staked in 1964 in Nicol Twp. in the Montreal River Miniiif. Division. They tie on to, and extend southward from, MR 29066, t Si e most southerly claim in the Lost Lake group of Castle bar Silver Si Cobalt Mines, Highway 560 from Elk Lake to Goiv^anda crosses the property appro* xiiuatcly 6 diles east of Gowfiinda. The road passes over the south east corner of MR and the north-west corner of MR 37545, ma-

3 -2- l(ing the clairas readily accessible. TOPOGRAPHY The terrain in the area of the claims is reasonably rugged with extremes in elevation estimated at feet. Over-burden and outcrop contour are the result of pleistocene glaciation. Outcrops are numerous in the nor tit-west.corner of MR where a hill of diabase is exposed. The ground level drops sharply from this hill to a valley in the area of the suggested contact, then slopes to the south into the swamp on the central claims. Hills rise from the swamp rather steeply toward the east boundary and less steeply to wards t li e south. Forest cover is Jackpine, poplar and birch in higher elevations} and cedar in swainps. The valleys and slopes of the north central zone are covered with dense alder* GISOLOGY The stratigraphic sequence of formations on the claims is as follows : Keweenawan - Nipissing diabase (Igneous contact) Cobalt - Lorrain arkose/greywaeke, quartzite - Gowganda conglomerate The diabase outcrops on the north and dips south-east under the sediment s. Nipissing Diabase This rock ik medium to coarse grained and grey in colour. Lath- like feldspar crystals were evident in a uniform matrix of quartz and dark minerals, denoting a typical diabasic texture. The feld spar in Host outcrops is plagioclase but diabase with pink ortho clase v/as observed near the west boundary of MR One outcrop of fine grained diabase occurs near the contact at 9 + OON and 4+OOW.

Rounded boulders o/ a variety of older rock types supgests B largely water-borne deposition. Outcrop*. of Lorrain formation ere a red and grey banded arkose, which is f i nt-j i a in cd, hard, siliceous and lias a tendency for part- i nf alonf the bedding planet. Well defined ripple marks were obser ved on t larfc outcrop recently exposed by road construction in the o north-west corner of MK This formation dips at 30 to the south-east. Interbedded with the arkose are layers of pink quart zite. KeixnantK of bedding are visible in some outcrops but it is l a r f: c l y n a s s i v c. The cluing me located on the Vfit riia of a local depression in the diabat-e sill. The upper contact of the intrusive crosses the north-west cornet of K K S74&2 and the property south of this contact is underlain by cobalt sediments. Severn! old trenches v.-ere observed in the course of mapping, how ever, no vein material v.-as discovered. This work v^as done to estab lish the thuructcr of the redrock, and not to expose contacts or veins.
