Georgia Lake Lithium Mines Limited, 100 Adelaide Street West, Suite 1600, Toronto, Ontario. Gentlemen: 63A.294 BARBARA LAKE 010 This is a geological report on the property you have in the Georgia Lake Lithium Area, Nipigon Forest Reserve, Port.., - F- ' ' - Arthur Mining Division, District of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The geological survey was carried out in the field season of 1955, by Mr. W. R. Montgomery, Mr, R. B. Good. Geologists, and the writer, on behalf of Geo- Technical Development Company Limited, Two geological maps covering the property, with a scale of one inch equals two hundred feet, accompany this report. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS The claim group is underlain by Pre-Animikie meta-sediments, with simple structure, and cutting here and there by narrow dikes, most of which are probable diaschistic. The Pegmatite dikes discovered on the property are lall and do not contain lithium minerals. However, erratics of tnatite rich in spodumene are common. Three test diamond holes are tentatively proposed to follow a trenching operation \ed to investigate a group of such erratics. These proposed drill holes are in conjunction with the cross-section drilling sing carried out on the property... rt l C A L DEVELOPMENT COMPANY LIMITED
- z - PROPERTY, LOCATION AMD ACCESS The holdings of the Company in this area consist of the following thirty-nine mining claims: T, B Z inclusive 9 T. B inclusive ^l'i T. B inclusive, 9 These claims were known as the "Hadley South Block" of the Cosgrave Lake Area, Nipigon Forest Reserve, Port Arthur Mining Division, District of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The northwest corner of this property adjoins the property of the Conwest Exploration Company Limited, where six groups of spodumene-bearing pegmatite are located. The north and east boundaries of the property were surveyed by Land Surveyors R. S, Kirkop and Son of Fort William, Ontario. The south and west boundaries of the property are adjoining the property of Canadian Lithium Mining Corporation Limited, and have only claim lines marking the borders. It should be noted here that Claims T. B , and 66875, located at the interior of the group, are not properly defined. (See Geological Map.) BED-TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT COMPANY LIMITED
- 3. Location of the property is about 8 miles east of McKirdy on the Longlac-Port Arthur Branch of the C* N* R., and about 25 miles north of the main C. P. R. Line, and the Town of Nipigon. The property would be about 100 miles northeast of the Lakehead. From Nipigon, one can drive an automobile along Highway No. 11 to a private gravel road of the St. Lawrence Corporation located at a short distance north of Gorge Creek. This gravel road leads to Georgia Lake. However, about seven miles east of the entrance of this gravel road from Highway No. 11, there is a bad bush road which leads toward the south, for about 1 miles, to the old Lumber Camp which is located near the northwest boundary of the property. Georgia Lake is of good size, and located only about 2 miles east of the property. Small planes can easily land and take off from this lake. TOPOGRAPHY The property is located within an area which is more or less a plateau. This plateau is slightly higher toward the northeast, and with the famous Nipigon diabase cliffs as the west and north boundaries, open towards the south. QEO-TECHN1CAL DEVELOPMENT COMPANY LIMITED
. 4 - There are three small lakes on the property; Blay Lake is located at the northwest corner, and Claim T, B is largely covered by this lake. It drains into the property of the Canadian Lithium Mining Corporation, Abner Lake runs more or less along the north boundary, and Claims T. B , and are partly covered by it. Joan Lake is more or less a narrow pond running through the east central part, and it drains to the east, The ground between these three lakes is rich in outcrops, poor in vegetation. Toward the south outcrops are rare, and the ground is, as a rule, covered by a stand of spruce with patches of swampy area, GENERAL GEOLOGY The rocks in the area are all of Precambrian Age, and this claim group is underlain by Pre-Animikie meta-sediments t cutting here and there by later dikes. Diabase of the famous Logan Sills probably was covering this plateau area, however, it has been eroded away, leaving only few small dikes cutting the meta-sediments. 5 - 5 - The following table shows the geological formations: ERA 3 T; o M 'S ^ U rt v l,q 4J Woo PERIOD Keweenawan Pr e-animikie FORMATION Diabase and related rocks. Intrusives: Granite, Pegmatite, Aplite, Diorite and Mesocratic Dikes. Meta-Sediments: Mostly para gneiss and schist. DIABASE AND BASALT Large cliffs of Keweenawan diabase and its related rocks are located about 2-1/E miles to the west and northwest of the property. These rocks are commonly medium to coarse grained. However, only one dike of diabase and one dike of basalt have been found here on the property. The diabase found here is medium to fine grained, with a probable diabasic texture. The basalt is a typical aphanite, very fine grained, with a high percent age of mafic minerals, and appears black. These dikes are small (not greater than three feet in width), and are cross-cutting the gneissosity or schistosity of the meta-sediments. GRANITE, PEGMATITE AND APLITE Granite forms the largest sill or dike on the property. At Line 4E, l,130 feet to l,300 feet north of the Central Base Line, GEO-TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT COMPANY LIMITED
. 6 - the width of the granite is about 180 feet. This is a typical pinkish to white granite with K-feldspar, plagioclase, quartz and 5*20 percent biotite. Xenoliths of paragneiss have been observed in this granite along the walls. In places, the texture of the granite is gneissic or porphyritic. Where the granite is porphyritic, feldspar is the phenocryst, Syenitic variety of the granite has been observed locally. The granite with higher percentage of biotite (up to 35^o) and the porphyritic granite are commonly occurring in small dikes. Pegmatite dikes and patches which occur on the surface are very small, with a maximum width of about 4 feet. They have no appreciable length. The olor of these few pegma tite dikes is white, and they are i as a rule, muscovite pegmatite. Some pegmatite dikelets are two-mica pegmatite. DIORITE AND MESOCRATIC DIKES The diorite found in the property is a medium to coarse grained dark grey rock, with about 65ft amphibole, ZQo/o feldspar, little quartz. At Line 4E, 240 feet north of the Central Base Line, and 180 feet west, the diorite outcrop reaches 10 to 40 feet wide. In places, this diorite contains small patches GEO- TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT COMPANY LIMITED
. 7. of differentiated amphibolite, Other outcrops of diorite some times have higher percentages of feldspar and quartz, and give an appearance of grano-diorite. The mesocratic dikes are grey to dark grey in color, fine to sugar grained, and, in places, give an appearance of lamprophyre. They have abundant mafic minerals, predom- inently biotite. A typical outcrop of this is located at Tie Line 700 feet south, 110 feet west. These dikes are, as a rule, not more than 5 feet wide, parallel, and not far from a leucrocratic dike - probably representing the relationship of diaschistic dikes, META-SEDIMENTS These include well banded paragneisses, schist and greywacke. The paragneisses are predominating* These rocks are, as a rule, grey in color. Occasionally, granitization has been recognized by the increase of percentages of feldspar and quartss in the rock, which gave the rock a typical appearance of a granite gneiss. The meta-sediments have been further described and classified by the facts of whether they carry noticeable amounts of: 1. Injected quarts stringers or veinlets. 2. Garnet. 3. Concretions. 4. Staurolite. BED-TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT COMPANY LIMITED
. 8 - STRUCTURE The strikes of the meta-sediments are from north 650 to 850 east; dip 65 O to 85 O north or vertical. Appreciable changes of strikes are rare, and usually near larger bodies of dikes. Furthermore i most of the dikes are diaschistic and, except pegmatite, they are more or less parallel to the gneissosity or schistosity of their country rocks. These facts are not in favour of the occurrence of any complex geological structure. The non-existence of high grade metamorphic rocks and the not uncommon occurrence of hydrothermal quartz stringers in meta-sediments, indicate that the area was probably rather far away from any large body of intrusive, except the diabase sill, which was probably overlying the area and was, later on, eroded away. ECONOMIC GEOLOGY AND RECOMMENDATIONS No economic mineral deposit has been discovered in the property. The numerous outcrops with simple structure, and rock formations found on the north and central parts of the property, are sufficient to indicate their barren nature. GEO-TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT COMPANY LIMITED
- 9. The pegmatite dikes with Lithium-b ear ing minerals discovered in the neighbouring Conwest property, however, appeared to strike toward Claim T. B, Nevertheless, the strikes of pegmatite dikes in an area of meta-sediments with many fracture cleavages are commonly not persistent. Little is known about the geology of the southeast part of the property. From the few outcrops studied, the general feature v/ould be similar to the north. However, one outstanding fact found on this part of the property calls for attention. An interesting group of eleven good sized erratics which carried spodumene has been located close to the South Base Line, from 2,800 to 3,100 feet east. These erratics have eiees ranging from about 3 x 3 x 3 to 15 x 15 x 10 cubic feet, and appear not carried by glacier from a far distance. Trenches du# immediately north and northeast of the group did not uncover any pegmatite dike. The erratics have similar appearance to the pegmatite of the showings on the property of Conwest, the nearest of which is little more than a mile to the northeast. No similar emtics have been found in between. Further exploration toward the northeast by means of trenching is thus desirable. The purpose of ttyu operation is to locate indicative erratics, pegmatite EO-TECHNIC. L DEVELOPMENT COMPANY LIMITED
dikes, aft well as other rock typee tracing backward along the track of the glacier. However, this operation is limited only to the high ground. In. view of the fact that large areas of this part of the property arc covered by ewampy low ground and over burden, arid that a programme of crose-section diamond drilling is being carried out on the northeast section of the property, three shallow diamond drill holes arc tentatively suggested to follow the trenching operation: #1 3,700'Eaet of South Base Wne - loo'n. 11 The detailed geological mapping was carried out over Base Lines, Picket Lines and Boundary Survey Lines. The base lines were cut one-half mile apart, and turned off by a transit from a tie line which runs North 51-1/20 East. The picket lines were turned off at 400-foot intervals by board from a base line, and tie into the base line where it comes out, or tie into the survey boundary. All cut lines have been tied on to the preliminary boundary, survey data given by R. S, Kirkup and Son, Surveyors and Engineers, Fort William, Ontario. Places where discordance at the boundary is located have been indicated by heavy dotted lines on the geological maps accompany ing this report. Because of the fact that the picket lines were 400 feet apart, in conducting the geological mapping, the geologists had to cover ground 200 feet each side of a picket line and tie in the geology to that line, A total of 44.6 rniies of lines were cut and chained, and 49.7 miles of lines were geologically mapped. The last figure includes 5. l miles of survey boundary which have been mapped geologically. QEO-TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT COMPANY LIMITED
