3 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Reconnaissance geophysics and prospecting on a patented 5 claim group in Lebel Township located an undrilled electromagnetic conductor zone along strike from minor copper mineralization in altered metavolcanic rocks. The property is overlain by more than twenty feet of tailings from the old Lakeshore gold mine operation. Local significant gold values were found in these. One drill hole, after minor detailed geophysics/ will test the EM anomaly. Additional sampling of the tailings will be undertaken, if warranted. A total budget of approximately $3$, Of5" is allo cated for this project in SUMMARY During the summer of 1980, routine checking of a strong airborne EM anomaly indicated from the 1979 Ontario Kirkland Lake area data release disclosed a moderate to strong conductive trend on 5 patented claims located less than two miles south of the town of Kirkland Lake. The area is privately held by Mr. E. Wekwert of St. Louis, and a lease arrangement for the property was con cluded with him this fall. The conductor has not been drilled previously, probably having been overlooked for several of the following reasons: (1) It lies close to a power line;

4 2 (2) The trend is approximately north-south, or parallel to the flight lines of most previous surveys; (2) The area is underlain by old mine tailings and is on patented land not easily open to mineral entry. INTRODUCTION The claim group was checked while routinely following up airborne targets generated by the Ontario Government sponsored geophysical release of September By coincidence, the property was owned by a relative of a Lacana employee, and once a drill target had been confirmed on the ground, a lease was negotiated and finalized with little difficulty. The property is situated very close to downtown Kirkland Lake and is logistically in an excellent location. PREVIOUS WORK Having been a dump site for the old Lakeshore mine tailings, the property is mainly covered by this material. Data on file at the Resident Geologist's office in Kirkland Lake in dicate that claims to the south and west have been explored by pitting and at least three short drill holes. An old shaft is located about k mile north of the claim group, and tested gold-copper mineralization found in narrow quartz veins. One of the drill holes to the south reported re covering fragments of massive sulphides containing some chalcopyrite from a broken zone in talc chlorite schist.

PROPERTY STATUS As shown in Figure l, the property consists of 5 patented mining claims optioned from E. Wekwert, and numbered as follows: L3427, L2539, L1105, L1106, Lllll. No assessment work requirements are needed for these and the lease agreement does not provide for a minimum work commitment. t Access to the property is by a trail south of Kirkland Lake. It is passable by 4-wheel drive vehicle or snowmachine. Most of the property has the form of a sand plain. A total of approximately 200 acres are covered by the 5 claims. GENERAL GEOLOGY The claims are situated near the west boundary of the Lebel Stock, a large syenitic body which underlies most of the East-central part of Lebel Township. The metavolcanics near the contact are somewhat metamorphosed thermally and injected with veinlets of quartz and locally quartz feldspar pegmatitic material. A strong magnetic feature trends sub-parallel to the contact of the stock

6 near the centre of the claim group. amphibolitic in composition. The metavolcanics are Chalcopyrite-pyrite mineralization occurs in irre gular quartz veins cutting the amphibolitic metavolcanics at the north end of the property. These are oriented both sub-parallel to foliation and cross cutting it. Minor gold values were reported from samples taken in pits and the shaft to the north. WORK PROGRAM GEOPHYSICS A 3,800 foot north-south baseline was established on the Lebel Township claim group and 1,200 foot grid lines were marked at 500 foot intervals. This was done by method of compassing, chaining and picketing. An electromagnetic survey was conducted on the grid using an Apex Max-Min II horizontal loop EM unit with a coil separation of 400 feet. Readings were taken every 100 feet. Frequencies of 1777 Hz. and 444 Hz. were chosen to obtain readings from which an EM profile of the area covered by the grid could be plotted. The results of this survey are shown in Figures 2 and 3. A VLF-EM dip angle survey was also conducted over the grid using a Crone Radem VLF instrument, with Annapolis, Md as the transmitting station. The results of this survey can be seen in Figure 4. A moderate conductor was located near the'center of the claim group with the Max-Min II horizontal loop EM instrument,

7 It has a north-south trend and extends for over 2,000 feet along strike. The VLF-EM profile also gave conductive indications nearly coincident with the interpreted horizon tal loop conductor axes, especially near the south end of the property. Due to the extremely noisy magnetic conditions last summer (sunspot activity peak), accurate magnetic readings were impossible to take. The conductive zone appears to be moderately deep, perhaps feet below surface and approximately 40 feet thick. Dip determinations from the EM data are ambiguous, although at the south end an easterly dip is indicated. TAILINGS SAMPLING Twenty-six samples of tailings were taken to depths of about three feet near the center of the survey grid. This portion of the grid was chosen for sampling because of the moderately strong Max-Min II horizontal loop EM profile ob tained here. The tailings are composed of a dry layer of sand overlying alternating bands of wet sludge which vary in colour from gray through to yellow a,nd purple, and which attain a depth of 10 feet or more in places. By digging pits at the predetermined survey stations (see Figure 5) and taking a vertical slice of the sludge with a shovel, representative cross-sections of the upper portion of the tailings pile were obtained. These samples were then delivered for assay, the results of which are shown in Figure 6. Also, eight samples of rock outcrop were taken from the north end of the grid at.lthe edge of the tailings pile and sent for assay. The results of these assays are also shown in Figure 6. The tailings samples returned generally low gold

8 values, less than.001 oz./ton, with the exception of a group near the central part of the claims where assays of 0.02 to 0.07 oz./ton were obtained.
