2 Applicatin range The SCHMIDT Vlume Flw Sensr IL 30.0xx is designed as inline sensr i.e. the tubular measuring sectin is already integrated in its basic bdy. Fur variants with different diameters are ffered: Type Inner-Ø [mm] Thread cnnectin Vlume flw [Nrm-m 3 /h] Article N. The sensr measures bth vlume flw as well as the temperature f pure 1 air and gas with wrking pressure up t 16 bar (gauge pressure). The sensr is based n the measuring principle f a thermal anemmeter and measures the standard vlume flw f the measuring medium which is utput in a linear way as standard (respective: Nrm) vlume flw V N (unit: m 3 /h), referred t standard cnditins f T N = hpa and p N = 20 C. Thus, the resulting utput signal is independent f the pressure and temperature f the measured medium. The sensr features several special prperties, ntably due t the unique Multi-Pint-Measurement design (MPM) f its sensr elements: Best measurement results even in nt fully smthened air flws Excellent sensitivity High measurement dynamics These prperties make the sensr highly suitable fr: Cnsumptin f cmpressed air Cnsumptin f gases When using the sensr utdrs, it must be prtected against direct expsure t the weather. 1 N chemically aggressive cntent / abrasive particles; check suitability in individual cases Instructins fr Use - SCHMIDT Vlume Flw Sensr IL 30.0xx page 4
3 Munting instructins General infrmatin n handling The vlume flw sensr IL 30.0xx is a precisin instrument with high measuring sensitivity, which can be achieved nly by a delicate structure f its measuring prbes. Therefre, applying mechanical frces t the prbe tips inside the husing shuld be avided if pssible. In case f cleaning by the custmer, this shuld preferably be made cntactless (e.g. with a spray) r nly with apprpriate care. The sensr prbes shuld nt be tuched r expsed t any ther mechanical effects. Likewise, a tuch can cause electrical damage t the ESD-sensitive sensr elements. The sensr prbes can be damaged by ESD. T prtect the sensitive inside, SCHMIDT Technlgy delivers the sensr with prtective caps placed int bth ends f its bdy which shuld be remved nly befre final installatin. And vice versa when dismunting the sensr the prtective caps shuld be attached in place immediately. In general, great care is required when handling the sensr. The husing f the sensr is made f andized aluminium. This ensures a lw-frictin screw-in f the installatin pipes int the husing. Due t the sftness f the material, hwever, the thread windings culd be irreversibly damaged when tilting the pipes while screwing in. The threads f the sensr bdy can take irreversible damage if handled incrrectly, i.e. by tilting pipes when screwing in. If the sensr is installed withut the extended measurement sectins which are ffered by SCHMIDT Technlgy, the dimensins and tlerances prescribed by the manufacturer must be bserved strictly fr the custmized installatin. Crrespnding dimensinal drawings are available as dwnlad frm Instructins fr Use - SCHMIDT Vlume Flw Sensr IL 30.0xx page 5
Systems with verpressure The IL 30.0xx is designed fr a maximum wrking pressure f 16 bar. As lng as the measuring medium is perated with verpressure, make sure that: Only apprpriately pressure-tight munting accessries are used. All cnnectins t pressurized systems are checked fr pressure tightness frm time t time. Munting and dismunting f the sensr can be carried ut nly as lng as the system is in depressurized state. The extended measuring sectins, which are ptinally available frm SCHMIDT Technlgy (see subchapter Accessries), are delivered with tw O-Rings which are intended as pressure seals fr easy installatin (must be applied by custmer). If the custmer uses his wn pipes, suitable installatin and sealing equipment must be used (e.g. sealing tape). In any case take care that the threads are screwed int the husing withut tilting, t avid damaging f the sensr bdy. Furthermre, befre applying pressure, the sensr must be checked fr a safe and firm installatin. After pressurizatin check fr any leakages and eliminate them immediately if there are sme. Befre applying pressure, make sure that all screw cnnectins are firmly seated and cannt be lsened. Unscrewing while the system is under pressure can damage the sensr and can als result in serius harm t yur health. The pressure sealing parts f the installatin have t be checked regularly fr pressure tightness and safe installatin. Flw characteristics Lcal turbulences f the medium can cause distrtin f measurement results. The resulting measurement distrtins are reduced t a minimum by the special sensr design MPM (Multi-Pint-Measurement all variants except IL ). In rder t get maximum accuracy it s nevertheless advisable t smth turbulences f the gas flw befre applying it t the sensr. The simplest methd is t prvide a sufficiently lng distance bth in frnt f (run-in distance) as well as behind the sensr (run-ut distance) abslutely straight and withut disturbances. The abslute length f the respective distances is indicated as a multiple f the inner diameter D f the pipe. Instructins fr Use - SCHMIDT Vlume Flw Sensr IL 30.0xx page 6
R ,6 14 5,1 Fr types with MPM it is recmmended t prvide at least 10xD in frnt f the sensr and 5xD after the sensr. Cncerning the IL (withut MPM) the standard lengths (up t 45xD inlet) shuld be used. If this is nt pssible the run-in distance shuld take up 2/3 f the available measuring length and the run-ut distance 1/3 f it. Accessries fr installatin Fr munting f the SCHMIDT Vlume Flw Sensr IL 30.0xx, an extensive assembly f accessries is available t cver a wide range f applicatins (see Table 2). Type / article N. The plug husing, and thus als a pssibly screen f a plugged cnnectin cable, is electrically cnnected t the metal husing f the sensr. The apprpriate prtectin class III (SELV) respective PELV (EN 50178) has t be cnsidered. 3 Spigt nut is n cnnecting cable Instructins fr Use - SCHMIDT Vlume Flw Sensr IL 30.0xx page 8
Pwer supply Fr prper peratin the sensr requires direct vltage with a nminal value f 24 V with permitted tlerance f ±10 %. Deviating values lead t deactivatin f measuring the vlume flw r even t defects and, therefre, shuld be avided. As far as it is functinally pssible, the LED indicatin reprts the faulty peratinal cnditins (see chapter 5). Only perate sensr within the defined range f perating vltage (U S = 24 V DC ± 10 %). Undervltage 4 may result in malfunctin; vervltage can lead t irreversible damage. Operating current f the sensr (impulse utput current nt included) is typically 90 (40) ma, maximum 300 (120) ma (IL in brackets). Specificatins fr perating vltage apply t the cnnectin at the sensr. Vltage drps generated due t line resistances must be cnsidered by the custmer. Wiring f analgue utputs Bth analgue utputs (vlume flw and temperature f medium) are designed as shrt-circuit prtected current interfaces (4 20 ma). The respective lad R L must be cnnected t the reference ptential (GND) f the sensr. Lad specificatin: R L 500 ; C L 10 nf Wiring f impulse utput The pulse utput (vlume) is designed as highside driver (P-MOSFET, pen drain) cnnected t the (reverse prtected) perating vltage. It is prtected by tw methds, a serial dide against higher external vltage as well as generally by an analgue current limitatin with a limit current f typical 50 ma (max. 65 ma). The lad has t be cnnected t GND. Mdule cnnectr The SCHMIDT Vlume Flw Sensr IL 30.0xx cmes with an additinal cnnectr (M12, female, A-cded, 5-pin) fr cnnecting ptinal expansin mdules (see Figure 1). 11 Analgue utputs Representatin f measuring range The measuring range f the crrespnding measuring value is mapped in a linear way t the signal range. Fr vlume flw measurement the measuring ranges frm zer t the variant-specific end f the measuring range V N,max (see Table 5). Vlume flw Temperature f medium I Out [ma] 21, I Out [ma] w N [%] T M [ C] V Table 5 N = V N,max 16 ma (I Out,V 4 ma) T N M = 80 C 16 ma (I Out,T M 4 ma) 20 C The measuring range f the medium temperature T M is specified between -20 C and +60 C. Nte regarding cmmissining: Nrmally the temperature utput indicates apprx. 12 ma because the typical prevailing rm temperature f 20 C crrespnds t abut half f the measuring range. Errr signalling 6 The interface utputs 2 ma. Exceeding measuring range f vlume flw Measuring values higher than V N,max are utput linearly up t 110 % f the signalling range (this crrespnds t the maximum utput f 21.6 ma, see left image in Table 5). Fr higher values the utput signal remains cnstant. Errr signalling desn t take place because damage f the sensr is unlikely. 6 In accrdance t NAMUR specificatin Instructins fr Use - SCHMIDT Vlume Flw Sensr IL 30.0xx page 11
Medium temperature beynd specificatin range Operatin beynd specified limits 7 can damage the measuring prbes and, therefre, is seen as a critical errr: Medium temperature belw -20 C: The analgue utput fr T M switches t errr signalling (2 ma). The measuring functin f vlume flw is switched ff; its analgue utput als reprts an errr (2 ma). Medium temperature abve +60 C: Up t 65 C the temperature is still utput linearly (crrespnds t 21 ma), e.g. t enable an vershting f a heating cntrl. The vlume flw is measured and displayed further n. Abve this critical limit the measurement f vlume flw is switched ff and its utputs are ging t errr (2 ma / lcked). The utput fr T M jumps directly t its maximum value f 22 ma which differs frm standard errr signalling. Impulse utput Signalling One impulse represents a defined vlume that has flwed. During the pulse signal itself, the utput transistr switches thrugh fr a fixed time (cnducting) therwise the transistr is lcked (high impedance). Pulse valence: IL ; IL MPM: 0.1 Nrm-m 3 IL MPM; IL MPM: 1.0 Nrm-m 3 Pulse duratin (fix): 1 s Errr signalling As lng as the analgue flw vlume utput signals errr (2 ma), the pulse utput is lcked (high impedance). 7 Switching hysteresis fr the threshld is apprx. 2 K. 13 6 Cmmissining Befre applying supply vltage t the SCHMIDT Vlume Flw Sensr IL 30.0xx the fllwing checks have t be carried ut: Mechanical munting: All screws are tightened prperly. Suitable pressure prtectin measures are carried ut (e.g. sealing tape in the threads). Cnnecting cable: Fr measurements in media with verpressure check if all screws are tightened prperly and all mechanical cnnectins are pressure tight. Prper cnnectin in the field (switch cabinet r similar). Tight fit f spigt nut f the cnnectr f the cnnecting cable at sensr enclsure. If the sensr is in the crrect peratinal state after initializatin it switches int measuring mde. The indicatin f vlume flw (bth LEDs and signal utputs) jumps fr a shrt perid t maximum and settles after apprx. ne secnd at the crrect measuring value prvided the sensr prbe has medium temperature already. Otherwise, the prcess will prlng until the sensr has reached medium temperature. 7 Infrmatin cncerning peratin Ambient cnditin temperature The SCHMIDT Vlume Flw Sensr IL 30.0xx mnitrs the temperature f bth medium and electrnics. As sn as ne limit f the specified peratin ranges is exceeded, the sensr switches ff ne r bth measuring functins assciated with the medium depending n the situatin and reprt the crrespnding errr. As sn as prper peratinal cnditins are restred, the sensr resumes nrmal functin. Even a shrt-term ver- r undershting f the safety limit values can lead t permanent damage f the sensr which must be avided by all means. Even shrt-term exceedance r undershting f perating temperatures can cause irreversible damage t the sensr. Instructins fr Use - SCHMIDT Vlume Flw Sensr IL 30.0xx page 13
Ambient cnditin pressure The SCHMIDT Vlume Flw Sensr IL 30.0xx is suitable fr clean, nn-cmbustible air and gases that cntain neither dust, abrasive particles r vapurs nr gaseus ils r chemical aggressive cmpnents. Depending n the cnsistency and cmpsitin, depsits r ther cntaminants may lead t falsificatin f the measured value and shuld be avided cercively (see chapter 8). Siling r ther depsits n the sensing elements cause false measurement results. Therefre, the sensr shuld be checked fr cntaminatins regularly and, if necessary, has t be cleaned r send in fr maintenance. When cleaning, use nly mild agents (such as isprpanl) and avid direct cntact f the sensr elements as far as pssible. The suitability f the sensr fr use in any nn-clean media must be checked in individual cases. Cndensing liquid fractins in gases r even immersin int liquids can damage the prbe and therefre must be avided strictly. Als, the significantly higher heating capacity f liquids distrts the measuring results seriusly (in this case a much higher vlume flw is detected and will be signalled). (Cndensing) liquid n the measuring prbes causes serius measurement distrtins and can als damage the sensr irreversibly. 8 Service infrmatin Trubleshting Pssible errrs (errr images) are listed in Table 6. Furthermre several causes and measures t eliminate the errr are described. Causes f any errr signaling have t be eliminated immediately. Exceeding r falling belw the permitted perating parameters can result in permanent damage t the sensr. Instructins fr Use - SCHMIDT Vlume Flw Sensr IL 30.0xx page 14

Transprt / shipment f the sensr Fr transprtatin r dispatching f the sensr, it must be well prtected against vibratins and shcks. Ideally, the sensr is shipped with fitted prtective caps and in its riginal packaging. Siling, mechanical stress and / r tuching the sensr elements shuld be avided. Calibratin If the custmer has made n ther prvisins, we recmmend repeating the calibratin at a 12-mnth interval. Fr this purpse the sensr must be sent in t the manufacturer. A calibratin can be carried ut nly if the basic sensr, i.e. withut munted extended sectins r ther pipes, is sent in. Als make sure that there are n damages especially cncerning the sensr elements and the inner munting threads. Spare parts r repair N spare parts are available, since a repair is nly pssible at the manufacturer's facility. In case f defects, the basic sensr must be sent in t the supplier fr repair. Any ther installed parts like pipes r measurement extensins have t be remved. Als a cmpleted declaratin f decntaminatin, in cnjunctin with all shipping dcuments, must be attached at the utside f the shipment package. The apprpriate frm Declaratin f decntaminatin is enclsed t the sensr. Alternatively it can be dwnladed frm If the sensr is used in systems imprtant fr peratin, we recmmend keeping a replacement sensr in stck. Test and material certificates Every new sensr is accmpanied by a certificate f cmpliance accrding t EN Material certificates are nt available. Upn request, we shall prepare, at a charge, a calibratin certificate fr new devices r in case f a re-calibratin. The certificate is traceable t natinal standards.
