9 Cautins and warnings General Sme parts f this publicatin cntain statements abut the suitability f ur ceramic transient vltage suppressr (CTVS) cmpnents (multilayer varistrs (MLVs), CeraDides, ESD/EMI filters, SMD disk varistrs (CU types), leaded transient vltage/ RFI suppressrs (SHCV types)) fr certain areas f applicatin, including recmmendatins abut incrpratin/design-in f these prducts int custmer applicatins. The statements are based n ur knwledge f typical requirements ften made f ur CTVS devices in the particular areas. We nevertheless expressly pint ut that such statements cannt be regarded as binding statements abut the suitability f ur CTVS cmpnents fr a particular custmer applicatin. As a rule, EPCOS is either unfamiliar with individual custmer applicatins r less familiar with them than the custmers themselves. Fr these reasns, it is always incumbent n the custmer t check and decide whether the CTVS devices with the prperties described in the prduct specificatin are suitable fr use in a particular custmer applicatin. D nt use EPCOS CTVS cmpnents fr purpses nt identified in ur specificatins, applicatin ntes and data bks. Ensure the suitability f a CTVS in particular by testing it fr reliability during design-in. Always evaluate a CTVS cmpnent under wrst-case cnditins. Pay special attentin t the reliability f CTVS devices intended fr use in safety-critical applicatins (e.g. medical equipment, autmtive, spacecraft, nuclear pwer plant). Design ntes Always cnnect a CTVS in parallel with the electrnic circuit t be prtected. Cnsider maximum rated pwer dissipatin if a CTVS has insufficient time t cl dwn between a number f pulses ccurring within a specified islated time perid. Ensure that electrical characteristics d nt degrade. Cnsider derating at higher perating temperatures. Chse the highest vltage class cmpatible with derating at higher temperatures. Surge currents beynd specified values will puncture a CTVS. In extreme cases a CTVS will burst. If steep surge current edges are t be expected, make sure yur design is as lw-inductance as pssible. In sme cases the malfunctining f passive electrnic cmpnents r failure befre the end f their service life cannt be cmpletely ruled ut in the current state f the art, even if they are perated as specified. In applicatins requiring a very high level f peratinal safety and especially when the malfunctin r failure f a passive electrnic cmpnent culd endanger human life r health (e.g. in accident preventin, life-saving systems, r autmtive battery line applicatins such as clamp 30), ensure by suitable design f the applicatin r ther measures (e.g. installatin f prtective circuitry r redundancy) that n injury r damage is sustained by third parties in the event f such a malfunctin r failure. Only use CTVS cmpnents frm the AUTO series in safety-relevant applicatins. Please read Cautins and warnings and Page 9 f 13

10 Specified values nly apply t CTVS cmpnents that have nt been subject t prir electrical, mechanical r thermal damage. The use f CTVS devices in line-t-grund applicatins is therefre nt advisable, and it is nly allwed tgether with safety cuntermeasures like thermal fuses. Strage Only stre CTVS in their riginal packaging. D nt pen the package befre strage. Strage cnditins in riginal packaging: temperature 25 t +45 C, relative humidity 75% annual average, maximum 95%, dew precipitatin is inadmissible. D nt stre CTVS devices where they are expsed t heat r direct sunlight. Otherwise the packaging material may be defrmed r CTVS may stick tgether, causing prblems during munting. Avid cntaminatin f the CTVS surface during strage, handling and prcessing. Avid string CTVS devices in harmful envirnments where they are expsed t crrsive gases fr example (SO x, Cl). Use CTVS as sn as pssible after pening factry seals such as plyvinyl-sealed packages. Slder CTVS cmpnents after shipment frm EPCOS within the time specified: CTVS with Ni barrier terminatin, 12 mnths CTVS with AgPd terminatin, 6 mnths SHCV and CU series, 24 mnths Handling D nt drp CTVS cmpnents and allw them t be chipped. D nt tuch CTVS with yur bare hands - glves are recmmended. Avid cntaminatin f the CTVS surface during handling. Munting When CTVS devices are encapsulated with sealing material r vermlded with plastic material, be sure t bserve the precautins in Munting instructins, Sealing, ptting and vermlding. Make sure an electrde is nt scratched befre, during r after the munting prcess. Make sure cntacts and husings used fr assembly with CTVS cmpnents are clean befre munting. 11 The surface temperature f an perating CTVS can be higher. Ensure that adjacent cmpnents are placed at a sufficient distance frm a CTVS t allw prper cling. Avid cntaminatin f the CTVS surface during prcessing. Multilayer varistrs (MLVs) with AgPd terminatin are nt apprved fr lead-free sldering. Sldering Cmplete remval f flux is recmmended t avid surface cntaminatin that can result in an instable and/r high leakage current. Use resin-type r nn-activated flux. Bear in mind that insufficient preheating may cause ceramic cracks. Rapid cling by dipping in slvent is nt recmmended, therwise a cmpnent may crack. Cnductive adhesive gluing Only multilayer varistrs (MLVs) with an AgPd terminatin are apprved fr cnductive adhesive gluing. Operatin Use CTVS nly within the specified perating temperature range. Use CTVS nly within specified vltage and current ranges. Envirnmental cnditins must nt harm a CTVS. Only use them in nrmal atmspheric cnditins. Reducing the atmsphere (e.g. hydrgen r nitrgen atmsphere) is prhibited. Prevent a CTVS frm cntacting liquids and slvents. Make sure that n water enters a CTVS (e.g. thrugh plug terminals). Avid dewing and cndensatin. EPCOS CTVS cmpnents are mainly designed fr encased applicatins. Under all circumstances avid expsure t: direct sunlight rain r cndensatin steam, saline spray crrsive gases atmsphere with reduced xygen cntent Please read Cautins and warnings and Page 11 f 13

12 EPCOS CTVS devices are nt suitable fr switching applicatins r vltage stabilizatin where static pwer dissipatin is required. Multilayer varistrs (MLVs) are designed fr ESD prtectin and transient suppressin. CeraDides are designed fr ESD prtectin nly, ESD/EMI filters are designed fr ESD and EMI prtectin nly.
