9 Sldering Infrmatin A. Sldering Cnditins The fllwing cnditins must be avided during sldering: verheating, ESD, mechanical shck, vibratin, ultrasnic shck, mechanical damage and cntaminatin. Slder n clser than 3mm frm the base f the header. Only slder t the package leads. Sldering t the LED header r the cap will result in damage t the device. If clamping the LED is required, mechanical stress n the LED shuld be minimized. D nt munt the LED directly n the PCB r heat sink by sldering directly t the LED header r cap. Only use nn-crrsive flux. Only cut device leads at rm temperature using an ESD prtected tl. D nt apply stress t the leads while ht. D nt apply current t the device until it has cled dwn t rm temperature after sldering. When frming leads, the leads shuld be bent at a pint at least 3mm frm the base f the header. Frm leads prir t sldering. D nt use header r can f LED t frm leads. B. Precautin fr Use A. UV Light These devices are ultravilet LEDs. During peratin, the LED emits high intensity ultravilet (UV) light, which is harmful t skin and eyes.

D nt lk directly int the UV light and wear prtective equipment during peratin. UV light is hazardus t skin and may cause cancer. Avid expsure t UV light when LED is peratinal. Precautins must be taken t avid lking directly at the UV light withut the use f UV light prtective glasses. D nt lk directly at the frnt f the LED r at the LED s lens when LED is peratinal. Attach the fllwing warning labels n prducts/systems that use UV LEDs. B. Static Electricity Electrstatic discharge (ESD) is the defined as the release f static electricity when tw bjects cme int cntact. While mst ESD events are cnsidered harmless, it can be an expensive prblem in many industrial envirnments during prductin and strage. The damage frm ESD t an LEDs may cause the prduct t demnstrate unusual characteristics such as: - Increase in reverse leakage current lwered turn-n vltage - Abnrmal emissins frm the LED at lw current The fllwing recmmendatins are suggested t help minimize the ptential fr an ESD event. One r mre recmmended wrk area suggestins: - Inizing fan setup - ESD table/shelf mat made f cnductive materials - ESD safe strage cntainers One r mre persnnel suggestin ptins: - Antistatic wrist-strap - Antistatic material shes - Antistatic clthes Envirnmental cntrls: - Humidity cntrl (ESD gets wrse in a dry envirnment) 10

11 Precautin fr Use C. Operating Cnditins 11 In rder t ensure the crrect functining f these LEDs, cmpliance t the maximum electrical specificatins is paramunt. These LEDs are particularly sensitive t any current value that exceeds the abslute maximum rating f the prduct. Any applied current in excess f the maximum specificatin will cause damage and pssible cmplete failure f the prduct. The current flwing in a LED is an expnential functin f the vltage acrss it. A small change in vltage can prduce a very large change in current and lead t cmplete failure f the LED. The use f current regulated drive circuits are recmmended fr these prducts. Any attempt t drive these UV LEDs with a vltage surce instead f a current surce will cause damage and pssible cmplete failure f the prduct. These devices are nt designed t be used under negative bias. This device is nt t be used in any type f fluid such as water, il, rganic slvent, etc. These LEDs are susceptible t heat generatin. Use care t design end prduct with adequate thermal management t ensure that LEDs d nt exceed maximum recmmended temperatures. Operating LEDs at temperatures in excess f specificatin will result in damage and pssible cmplete failure f the prduct. When the LEDs are in peratin the maximum current shuld be decided after measuring the package temperature. The driving circuit must be designed t allw frward vltage nly when it is ON r OFF. If the reverse vltage is applied t LED, migratin can be generated resulting in LED damage. EOS (Electrical Over Stress) EOS is defined as damage that may ccur when an electrnic device is subjected t a current r vltage that is beynd the maximum specificatin limits f the device. The effects frm an EOS event can be nticed thrugh prduct perfrmance like: Changes t the perfrmance f the LED package (If the damage is arund the bnd pad area and since the package is cmpletely encapsulated the package may turn n but flicker r shw severe perfrmance degradatin.) Changes t the light utput f the luminaire frm cmpnent failure Cmpnents n the bard nt perating at determined drive pwer Failure f perfrmance frm an entire fixture due t changes in circuit vltage and current acrss ttal circuit causing trickle dwn failures. It is impssible t predict the failure mde f every LED expsed t electrical verstress as the failure mdes vary significantly, but there are sme cmmn signs that will indicate an EOS event has ccurred: Damaged may be nticed t the bnd wires (appearing similar t a blwn fuse) Damage t the bnd pads lcated n the emissin surface f the LED package (shadwing can be nticed arund the bnd pads while viewing thrugh a micrscpe) Anmalies nticed in the encapsulatin and phsphr arund the bnd wires.this damage usually appears due t the thermal stress prduced during the EOS event.

Strage A surge prtectin circuit An apprpriately rated ver vltage prtectin device A current limiting device T avid misture penetratin, we recmmend string UV LEDs in a dry bx with a desiccant. The recmmended temperature and relative humidity are between 5ºC and 30ºC and belw 50% respectively. LEDs must be stred prperly t maintain the device. If the LEDs are stred fr 3 mnths r mre after being shipped frm SETI, a sealed cntainer with a nitrgen atmsphere shuld be used fr strage. Replace the remained LEDs int the misture-prf bag and reseal the bag after wrk t avid thse LEDs being expsed t misture. Prlnged expsure t misture can adversely affect the perfrmance f the LEDs. If the package has been pen fr mre than 168hr r the clr f the desiccant changes, cmpnents shuld be dried fr 10-12hr at 60±5ºC. The cnditins f resealing shuld be as fllws: Temperature between 5 and 40ºC and relative humidity less than 30% E. Handling Precautins VOCs (Vlatile rganic cmpunds) emitted frm materials used in the cnstructin f fixtures can penetrate the LED packages and affect LED perfrmance and lifetime. Knwledge f the prperties f the materials selected t be used in the cnstructin f fixtures can help prevent these issues. When attaching LEDs, d nt use adhesives that utgas rganic vapr. Sldering shuld be dne as sn as pssible after pening the misture-prf bag. D nt rapidly cl device after sldering. D nt apply mechanical frce r excess vibratin during the cling prcess t nrmal temperature after sldering. Cmpnents shuld nt be munted n warped (nn cplanar) prtins f a PCB. The UV LED is prtected by a lens which requires careful handling Avid tuching glass lens parts especially with sharp tls such as tweezers Avid leaving fingerprints n glass lens parts. D nt handle this prduct with acid r sulfur material in sealed space. F. Cleaning If cleaning is required, isprpyl alchl r water with immediate drying is recmmended. D nt use ultrasnic cleaning. 12
