1 1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1.1 Introduction The proposed mining lease area applied for quarrying of Steatite Stone (soap stone) by Sri. Mohammad Akramis situated in survey no. No. 402of 1-30 Acres of Karigala Village, H.D. KoteTaluk, Mysore District, Karnataka which isgovernment Land. India is rich in Steatite Stone deposits and one among the leading countries in Quarrying and Exportof Steatite Stone. India has about 110 different varieties of Steatite Stones which are different in colour and texture. These varieties are used to produce monuments, Steatite slabs, titles, surface plates etc. The proposed area is not fit for agriculture and technical report from Department of Mines and Geology indicate that the subject area has Steatite Stone deposits.detailed study of the area has been done by the applicant.the salient features of the project are given Table 1.1. ThisStone is used as a making of kitchen articles, sculptures, and monuments etc. Open cast semi mechanized mining method is followed for quarrying of Steatite Stone. Sri. Mohammad Akramis the proprietor of the proposed project located in Sy No. 402of KarigalaVillage, H.D. KoteTaluk, Mysore District, Karnataka, which measures around 1-30 acres. He has significant experience in Steatite Stone mining. 2.2 Brief Information about the Project The mining lease area of1-30 acresis located in GovernmentLand. Open cast Semimechanized method mining is followed and it has been proposed to produce approximately1500 tons/annum of Steatite Stone. The nearest habitation from the proposed project is at a distance of 0.8 km towards SW direction ie, KarigalaVillage. 2.3 Need for the Project and Its Importance to the Country or Region The demand for Steatite Stone increased due to rapid industrialization and growth in infrastructure. So the number of Steatite Stone producing quarries is increasing in India. Steatite Stone is the chief material in this sector, for the export industries like Countertops in kitchens and laboratories, monuments, flooringslabs, & export.based on the demand of Steatite Stone, the lessee intends to produce the required quantity of Steatite Stone for domestic & international market. As per EIA notification 2006 project proponent issubmitting the proposal to get Clearance for production capacity of1500 tons/annumofsteatite Stone blocksfrom PFR-II
3 State Level Environmental Appraisal Committee/State level ImpactAssessment Authority of Karnataka constituted by MoEF&CC, GOI for the purpose of grant of quarrylease for which Notification for grant is issued. 2.4 Demands-Supply Gap The demand and supply for the Steatite Stone is growing which makes a lot of scope for revenue generation.once the stone is obtained after quarrying it is further processed and supplied to industries. 2.5 Domestic/ Export Markets Although Steatite Stone is a minor mineral, it is a major contributor in foreign exchange earnings. India is the second largest exporter of raw Steatite Stone after China and ahead of Brazil and South Africa. 2.6 Employment Generation Proposed mining is semi mechanized method and this project operation will provide livelihood to the08 workers. It will provide employment to the people residing in vicinity. 3.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION 3.1 Type of Project Including Interlinked and Interdependent Projects, If Any. A variety of ages ranging from 3400m.y. to 2500m.y. have been obtained for rocks of this gneissic complex. Peninsular Gneiss is to be considered as a complex of gneisses and granites. It is, as the name indicates a complex containing within it several cycles of supracrustal development, granite intrusion and migmatization Explorations Exploration is carried out. Lease area is covered with exposed as a outcrop and extended in all directions.
