2 Definition and Objective Geography is the study of nature - society interrelationships and their patterns and processes at the local, regional and the global level from a spatial and temporal perspective. It helps us to understand the diversity of the world we live in inculcating in us the importance of living in harmony with one another and the environment Key competencies 1.0 Studies the nature and processes of the environment in which he/she lives 2.0 Studies the components, characteristics and processes of the physical and human landscape 3.0 Examines how the physical and human environment is influenced by the interaction of physical and human processes 4.0 Learns the basic concepts and methods in physical and human geography that help in the understanding of the bio-physical and human landscape 5.0 Adopts an holistic approach to understand, analyze and interpret the physical and human landscape 6.0 Develops positive attitudes that help to conserve and sustain the physical and human landscape 7.0 Applies the geographical techniques to analyze, interpret and present data and information 8.0 Develops specific survival skills that help to meet challenging situations in life 9.0 Realizes the importance of an informed concern of the earth and its inhabitants for the promotion of a harmonious nature-society interrelationship 2

Colour pencils Assessment and Evaluation This syllabus proposes to make students understand the basic concepts of geography and develop skills to apply them in their activities. In the promotion of student competencies the individual and group activity methods are recommended. Such activities could be included in the school based assessment process. It is also proposed to expose the students to end of term and end of year written examinations conducted at the zonal, and the provincial levels. 7
