Context SLR Consulting Ireland was commissioned by Stream BioEnergy to undertake a ground investigation to inform preliminary engineering design of its proposed Renewable Bioenergy Plant at Huntstown, Finglas, Dublin.. Application Site The application site at Huntstown covers an area of approximately.79ha and forms part of the Huntstown Quarry landholding which is currently owned and managed by Roadstone Wood Ltd. The site currently comprises hardcore surfacing with numerous concrete hardstanding areas. The site is located to the south of the main access road leading to Huntstown Quarry, north of an abandoned construction works access road and approximately.5km west of the North Road (the former N National Primary Road). A buried kv electric cable runs along the existing access road, between it and the northern boundary of the application site and along a now abandoned section of the quarry access road. Ground levels over the application site vary and generally fall south to north. There is an open drainage ditch to the north of the main access road leading to the quarry.. Proposed Development The proposed development comprises construction and operation of a Renewable Bioenergy plant with the capacity to process up to 9, tonnes of nonhazardous biodegradable waste per annum. Introduction The ground investigation was carried out by staff from SLR Consulting Ireland in February an comprised excavation of trial pits across the application site to a maximum depth of.5m. The trial pits were excavated using a 6 tonne Volvo Wheeled excavator and earthworks samples were taken for laboratory testing at selected intervals.. Trial Pits A total of (No.) trial pits were excavated at the subject site in February and were overseen by and engineering geologist from SLR. The trial pit logs are reproduced in Appendix I and the location of each trial pit is shown on Figure. All ten trial pits encountered glacial till (also known as boulder clay ) beneath the made ground. The glacial till encountered in the trial pits was generally described as a firm to stiff sandy gravelly CLAY with subrounded to subangular cobbles and/or boulders. The boulders were generally found to be larger and more abundant with depth. A number of the trial pits (TP, TP5, TP6, TP7 and TP9) encountered a thin (less than.m) layer of light brown soft silt and clay above the glacial till / boulder clay and beneath the made ground. It is possible that this layer constitutes buried topsoil, which would be consistent with identification of some organic matter in trial pits TP6 and TP9. Trial Pits TP and TP, excavated in the NW portion of the site, both encountered obstructions at a depth of.7m and in each case, it was inferred that the these obstructions could represent the upper bedrock surface. However the excavator was incapable of progressing further to fully prove rockhead at these depths. It should be recognised that the obstructions encountered might also comprise large boulders in a clay matrix, so rockhead is considered to be possible but unproven at this depth. TP in the SW portion of the site and TP 8 in the eastern part of the site also encountered possible bedrock at depths of.7m and.m respectively. In both these cases, the unproven bedrock was described as weathered. The other 6 (No.) trial pits were excavated to depths that varied from.6m to.5m without encountering bedrock. It is therefore concluded that depth to bedrock appears to be generally greater than metres over much of the site, but could be reduced to.7m in the northwest part of the site.. Laboratory Testing A suite of laboratory testing was carried out on samples taken from the trial pits to obtain an early indication of the engineering behaviour of the earthworks materials likely to encountered during construction works. The laboratory tests carried out are shown in Table overleaf. SLR

Kildare. Laboratory test results are reproduced in Appendix II.. Laboratory Results Natural moisture content tests undertaken on sealed tub samples of Glacial Till material ranged between 7.% (TP) and 7% (TP9), with the majority of samples ranging between % and 8%. Particle size distribution curves for this material indicate it to be typically slightly sandy slightly gravelly CLAY. Atterberg limits test on Glacial Till samples (fraction passing.5mm sieve) yielded liquid limit (LL) values ranging between % and 5%, plastic limit (PL) values ranging from 7% to % and resultant plasticity index (PI) values ranging from % to %. These test results indicate that the glacial till at the application site can generally be classified as a low to intermediate plasticity clay. ph tests undertaken on four samples from trial pits TP, TP, TP7 and TP9 yielded values of between 8. and 7.8. Sulphate content tests undertaken on samples from trial pits TP, TP, TP9 and TP yielded sulphate content values of between. and.9g/l. Six California bearing relationship tests at natural moisture content were carried out and yielded CBR values ranging from.% to % at moisture contents between % and 6%. Six Moisture Condition Value tests at natural moisture were undertaken giving a range of 5.6% to.6% at moisture contents between 6% and %. Three Moisture Condition Value (MCV) relationship tests were undertaken on remoulded samples of Glacial Till over a range of moisture contents. The test results demonstrated the variation in MCV with change in soil moisture content. These relationship tests indicated MCV s ranged from 5.9% to 6.8%, with a typical moisture content range of 7% to 5%. SLR
