3 INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY OF WORK DONE During the course of a prospecting reconnaissance geological survey in the upper Klaskish River area in 1972, the presence of copper mineralization was noted in the area now covered by the Fang claims. Two claims were staked (FANG No. 1 and 2) and a two man geological party briefly examined the area in 1973 as part of a reconnaissance program. They recommended further detailed mapping, the results of which are outlined in this report. On June 22nd, 1974 a three man party was mobilized out of Port Alice by helicopter to the property. Seven additional claims (FANG No. 3 to 9) and one fractional claim (FANG No. 10 Fr.) were staked and subsequently, (see Map No. 3), approximately 14,000 feet of line was cut. A Magnetometer survey was run on the grid line (see Map No. 5 and 6), and an area roughly 1.2 square miles was mapped geologically at a scale of 1" = 200'. (See Map No. 4).

6 LOCATION AND PROPERTY The Fang claims are located on the upper Rlaskish River about 8 air miles southwest of Port Alice at an approximate elevation of 1500 feet at the camp. Port Alice, of course, is connected by roads and ferries to the remainder of Vancouver Island and the mainland, but access to the property may only be gained by helicopter. (See Map No. 1 and 2). The property consists of the following claims: FANG No. 1 FANG No. 2 FANG No. 3 FANG No. 4 FANG No. 5 FANG No. 6 FANG No. 7 FANG No. 8 FANG No. 9 FANG No.10 FR STAKING DATE DATE OF RECORD TAG - RECORD NO. NO. The claims have been grouped as the Red Group of mineral claims. (See Map No. 3).

9 TOPOGRAPHY The upper reaches of the Klaskish River lie in a deeply-incised valley, probably formed by erosion of a fault zone along a volcanic-intrusive contact. The Fang claims occupy a small bowl enlargement at the head of the valley and the slopes rise steeply on the east, south and west sides of the valley. The ridges around the valley are generally over 2000 feet and peaking over 3000 feet, The showings in the Fang claims area are at approximately 1500 feet. The slopes are covered with stunted and twisted fir, spruce, and cedar. Buckbrush, devil's club, and frequent steep-walled creeks make traverses difficult.

10 SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATXONS An intermittent zone of fracture controlled chalcopyrite and pyrite striking about 320' appears to parallel the intrusive-fault contact for a distance of at least 800 feet. An old trench across the fracturing returned assays over 30 feet of 0.71% Copper with an additional 80 feet of trench (unsampled) with an estimated similar grade. The magnetometer survey indicates a rough correlation between the areas of higher magnetic relief and the observed chalcopyrite mineralization. The alteration minerals associated with the sulphides are mainly quartz and epidote accompanied by a cryptocrystalline quartz silicification of the host volcanic rocks. The potential of a chalcopyrite-pyrite body of 5 million plus tons exists in a quartz-epidote fracturebreccia zone. To test this potential, I recommend that the existing grid be covered with an X.P. survey to determine the extent and continuity of the mineralization.

11 GEOLOGICAL REPORT REGIONAL GEOLOGY The Fang claims straddle the contact between an elongate pluton and Jurassic (Bonanza) volcanics. The pluton, which is the dominant geologic feature of the immediate area, ranges in composition from a feldspar-quartz diorite porphyry in the north through diorite,granodiorite and leuco-diorite phases in the more southerly sections. This complex of intrusive rocks trends about 310 and ranges at least as far north as the upper Mahatta River and as far south as the upper reaches of the Power River system. Conceivably, this body is continuous with the so-called Mahatta River complex, known to lie to the north along the lower Mahatta River. As yet this continuity has not been established in the field. For convenience the intrusive body in the vicinity of the Fang claims has been referred to as the Brooks intrusive. Roughly north of the divide between the Klaskish River and the Nasparti Rives, the Brooks pluton cuts through shallow-dipping Bonanza acid to intermediate volcanics and fragmentals. To the south of this divide, the intrusive cuts the contact between the Jurassic (Bonanza) rocks and the Triassic formations (Quatsino limestone and Karmutsen volcanics).

12 The long axis of the Brooks pluton, at 300' to 320, is parallel to the oldest and strongest structural direction in the area. A much younger 45' - 60' direction and a 100' direction of indeterminate age create a somewhat confusing block-faulting pattern in all the rocks of the region. All the observed metallic mineralization in the area is spatially related to the Brooks pluton. However, different mineral assemblages and alteration associations seem to suggest several different periods of mineralization. Copper-molybdenum mineralization appears on the Tent claims in a porphyry environment; minor magnetite pyrite-epidote skarns are found peripheral to the intrusive in several areas; a copper-pyrite fracture-breccia exists on the Fang claims, and on the lower Klaskish River a zinc-copperlead-pyrite quartz breccia zone has been located. This multiplicity of varied sulphide occurrences suggests a regional plutonic source which has been active more than once. The variation in composition within the intrusion lends some weight to this hypothesis.

13 GEOLOGY OF THE PROPERTY The sulphide mineralization found on the Fang claims lies entirely within the Bonanza Volcanics, associated with a zone of intense fracturing and silicification. The volcanics are in fault contact with a leuco-granite phase of the Brooks pluton and the mineralized fracture zone roughly parallels this contact within about 400 feet of the intrusive. The silicification and fracturing have destroyed much of the original texture of the host volcanic rocks in the area of the showings, but they appear to have been fine-grained, green to dark grey, slightly porphyritic, (with pyroxene and plagioclase phenocrysts), andesite flows intermixed with f ine-grained, grey, dacite volcanic f ragmentals and dacite flow breccias. The volcanics appear to be shallow-dipping to the north in the area surrounding the Fang claims, although within the vicinity of the sulphide zone no obvious bedding is discernible. The mineralization occurs as pyrite and chalcopyrite along fractures striking 300a to 325' and dipping 60' to 85' to the N.E. Less commonly, sulphide mineralization does occur on shallow-dipping fractures (2S0-40 ) of the same strike. Fine disseminated pyrite is present in 1% - 2% amounts in the volcanic rocks for some lateral distance from the showings and does appear to decrease with distance. However, 1% pyrite in the Bonanza rocks regionally is not unusual, so this apparent pyrite halo may not be significant.

14 L The only obvious gangue minerals in the fracture zone are quartz and epidote. Magnetite is found in minor quantities at the north and south ends of the zone. neither area is the magnetite associated with significant chalcopyrite. In both areas, the magnetite would appear to form on all three major fracture directions whereas the chalcopyrite evidently prefers the 300 attitude. The host rocks are strongly silicified for some distance around the showings and in some areas are replaced or invaded by small masses of cryptocrystalline quartz. The intrusive complex, to the northeast of the showing is the obvious source of the mineralization. the periphery of this pluton, at least in the Fang claims area, is a zone of leuco-granite or possibly leuco-diorite. Some outcrops suggest that the rock may originally have been a diorite or granodiorite which has been subsequently silicified and slightly recrystallized. In On Other outcrops are definitely a light-coloured quartz-rich granite containing partially-digested xenoliths of diorite. The pluton in general seems to be in fault contact in the area bordering the mineralized zone. It is postulated that the leuco-diorite (or leuco- granite) is the latest intrusive event and its path of intrusion was along the faulted contact with the older dioritic intrusion. It is likely that there has been some movement on the fault bordering the mineralized zone subsequent to the acid intrusion. It is also suggested that the sulphide mineralization emanated from the same source as the leuco- diorite.

15 The curious association of the crypto-crystalline quartz-sulphide combination with epidote and magnetite in the fracture zone suggests that the sulphide mineralization may have been emplaced in the same area where a minor skarn zone was developed from the previous diorite intrusion.

16 ROCK DESCRIPTIONS Andesite (Bonanza) This rock is typically dull green to medium greygreen, fine-grained and generally homogeneous in appearance. It weathers to a dark greyish brown to maroon. Less commonly, the rock was observed to be porphyritic with plagioclase and occasionally pyroxene phenocrysts 1 mm. to 5 rnm. in length. Very rarely an amygdaloidal mode was noted, the vesicles being filled with quartz and epidote. The amygdaloidal and porphyritic phases may represent flow tops and centers respectively but this could not be determined in the field. Pyroclastics (Bonanza) This rock is a very fine-grained medium grey-green unsorted dacitic fragmental tuff. The clasts are angular to subrounded, 1 mm. to 3 cm. in size, but generally 1 mm. - 3 mm. The clasts are mainly composed of quartz and andesite and stand out in relief slightly on a weathered surface. Leucodiorite Apparently the last phase of intrusion in the Brooks pluton, this curious rock was observed to be medium-grained to coarse-grained, light grey to buff, containhng 33% quartz, 65% plagioclase, and 2% biotite and hornblende. Occasionally, up to 6G74 of the feldspar was noted as orthoclase (leuco-granite?) Locally, xenoliths of partially dissolved dioritic material were found in this phase.

17 Granodiorite The leuco-diorite would seem to grade rapidly into a medium grey to buff-coloured, granodioritic rock of fine to medium-grained hypidiomorphic texture. St typically contains LO - 30% quartz, 2% hornblende, and 50-70% plagioclase. Diorite The field relations between the diorite and the granodiorite are confused, but in general they appear to grade into one another with the changing quartz content. The diorite is a medium grey-green to dark grey, mediumgrained rock composed of 35% hornblende, 65% plagioclase, and less than 5% quartz. The hornblende is slight-ly to moderately chloritized, giving a slightly greenish cast to a fresh surface. A fine-grained version of this rock with virtually no quartz appears as a dike or sill in the sulphide zone.

18 MAGNETOMETER SURVEY INTRODUCTION AND METHOD OF FIELD OPERA'rIONS Approximately 14,000 feet of grid line was surveyed on the Fang claims using a McPhar M700 magnetometer. Readings were taken at 50 foot intervals on lines two hundred feet apart. The station on Line at Baseline was set up as a main base station. The operator returned to the base statian for a reading every 40 minutes, from which data diurnal corrections were made to every line station reading on the remainder of the grid. All readings were taken on a magnetically quiet day. The instrument was adjusted by trial and error at the beginning of the survey so that most of the readings were taken on the most sensitive scale, enabling the operator to read to a 5 gamma accuracy. Later, a "datum constant" was algebraically added to all diurnally-corrected readings to eliminate negative values. The adjusted and corrected values were then plotted on a 1" - 200' scale topographic base map and the values were contoured at 200 gamma intervals. (See Maps No. 5 and 6). The operator of the instrument was J. Alsen, a third year geological student at U.B.C. Mr. Alsen was instructed in the use of the McPhar M700 by myself and has had several years experience in the use of the instrument.

19 OBSERVATIONS AND DISCUSSION. OF RESULTS The magnetic values contour into a regular, linear pattern of troughs and ridges, roughly striking 320'. The maximum variation is about 3700 gammas over the whole property, but the normal variation from trough to ridge is of the order of gammas. The area on the northeast side of the grid is mapped as being underlain by leuco-diorite of the Jurassic Coast Intrusives. by uniform values below 1600 gammas. Magnetically, this rock is characterized The contact between the intrusive and the Jurassic volcanics to the southwest is mapped as a fault contact and is marked by a magnetic contrast of about a 1000 gammas with a high magnetic ridge on the volcanic side of the contact. This feature suggests thermal intrusive effects, so it is possible that faulting has occurred along the original intrusive contact, or that a yaunger intrusive has penetrated the fault zone in this area. rough Economically more important, perhaps, is the apparent correlation between ridges of higher magnetic values and mapped occurrence of chalcopyrite and pyrite. This feature is illustrated on Map No. 7, which represents a section along line 4N. The topography is plotted at a scale of 1" = 100' and the magnetic profile is drawn above with a vertical scale of 1" = 300 gammas. Trench No. 2 shows good chalcopyrite mineralization striking subparallel to the linear pattern seen on the contoured magnetic map. The other mapped copper mineralization occurrences on the property also seem to roughly coincide with the higher magnetic ridges.
