.0 INTRODUCTION This report contains our interpretation of the resuts of airborne magnetic and eectomagnetic (INUT) surveys fown in the Detour Lake area of northeastern Ontario during May of 1981 on behaf of Getty Canadian Metas, Limited as part of a god exporation pro gramme in the region. Interest in the area centres around the dis covery in 1974 by Amoco Canada etroeum Ltd., of what has become a major god deposit near Detour Lake immediatey to the north of the area described herein.

2.0 LOCATION AND ACCESS The Detour area is centred approximatey 110 kiometers northeast of Cochrane, Ontario, and 600 kiometers directy north of Toronto, Ontario. Easiest summer access is by fixed-wing aircraft to Vandette Lake in the east portion of the property or by heicopter from oca centers of service and suppy such as Cochrane, Ontario or La Sarre, Quebec. A winter road from La Sarre north to the Detour minesite passes immediatey to the east of the survey area. An a-weather road presenty under construction from Cochrane to the Detour minesite wi pass to the northwest of the property. Appendix I shows a genera property ocation map aong with a more detaied map outining the survey area.

3.O ROERTY The airborne surveying covered a tota of 189 unpatented mining caims in the orcupine Mining Division. Appendix II contains a summary of the caim numbers aong with the technica data statements.

1 11 * AIRBORNE SURVEYS Genera The tota survey invoved 01 kiometers (1243 mies) of airborne data coection and was fown by Questor Surveys Limited of Toronto. Approximatey 151 km of surveying was carried out over the property described therein. The survey aircraft was a Britten-Norman Trisander, registration C-GNKW, based out of Timmins, Ontario. 4.2 Map Compiation The base maps for compiation and fight path recovery were constructed from uncontroed mosaics produced from photo graphs at a scae of 1:50,000. The fina maps were re produced at a scae of 1:10,000 on stabe transparent fim from which whiteprints can be made. Fight path recovery was accompished by comparison of a 35 mm fim recovered by an in-fight camera with the mosaic in order to ocate fiducia points. These points were approxi matey 1130 meters apart Survey rocedure Terrain cearance was maintained as cose to 122 meters as possibe with the E. M. bird at approximatey 46 meters above

the ground. A norma S-pattern fight path was used. An equipment operator ogged fight detais and monitored 5 instruments. A ine spacing of 0 meters was empoyed.

5.0 GEOLOGY AND MINERAL OCCURENCES 5.1 Summary The Detour roject area is underain by greenschist to amphi boite facies metavocanic and metasedimentary rocks of Archean age in the north-centra portion of the Abitibi Greenstone Bet. Later intrusives of granitic to dioritic composition truncate the metavocanic and metasedimentary rocks. Diabase dykes, the youngest rocks in the region, cut a rock types. eistocene cover comprising cayey ti, gacioacustrine cay, sandy ti and gaciofuvia eskers is variabe in extent and may be up to 60 m or more in thickness athough it generay averages 30 meters. Regionay, the past-producing Normeta Cu-Zn (j- Au, Ag) vo canogenic massive suphide deposit is ocated within the next greenstone bet immediatey to the south of the present pro ject area. Seco's major "Mines Sebaie" Cu-Zn-Au-Ag deposit ocated 29 km to the east of Amoco's Detour deposit in Brouian Township, Quebec, has recenty been paced into production. 5.2 Survey Area Geoogy The metasedimentary-metavocanic rocks in the survey area generay strike in a northery direction and dip steepy.

m m The disposition of units has been interpreted in arge part from airborne geophysica data as outcrop is scarce. The caim area, based on recent geoogica/geochemica work and resuts of previous driing is underain predominanty by basatic thoeiites with minor fesic metavocanics and interfow chemica metasediments. The atter types incude oxide and suphide iron formations, cherty suphide j- graphi tic iron formations etc. The iron formations are typicay expressed as airborne eectromagnetic/magnetic anomaies. A prominent north-south aeromagnetic anomay directy west of Vandette Lake, for exampe, is directy refective of a mixed oxide-suphide facies iron formation. m A major granite body occurs directy to the west of the caim group in the vicinity of Detour Lake. Structuray, there appears to be at east two main fod directions. The prominent regiona trend is east-west as B exempified by the east-west trending anticine north of Detour Lake. This fod punges 35 to 45 degrees to the west. A oca fexure or warp on the north imb contains the Detour deposit. The compimentary anticine to the south is inter

8 preted to be in the vicinity of Dobson Lake. The intervening B syncina axis probaby passes through the Vandette Lake-Nash Lake area. The east-west fods have been re-foded about northeastsouthwest axes, particuary in the vicinity of major grani- " tic intrusions. The re-foding expains the predominant B north-south strikes noted in the present project area (e.g. the iron formation west of Vandette Lake). m -*' 3 Exporation History and revious Work The area encompassing the present hodings has recenty been mapped by G. Johns of the Ontaro Geoogica Survey from whose report many of the subsequent descriptions and comments are g taken. Minera exporation activity has been recorded in the area since 1912 when god was discovered on the atten River. There has been sporadic exporation activity since 1925 foowing the discovery of a major copper-zinc deposit at Normeta, Quebec, with peak periods of exporation activity in the ate 1950's, eary 1960's and eary 1970's. Most of this activity was directed towards the search for base metas, with a concentration of exporation efforts in the vicinity of Atkinson and Vandette Lakes.

Numerous massive pyrite-pyrrhotite diamond dri inter sections have been recorded in the assessment fies of the respective provincia governments. Many of these inter sections were probaby never assayed for god. In addition, many ground eectromagnetic conductors were never dri tested. A major rush into the region foowed the Amoco god dis covery in 1974 and extensive caim staking occurred in the Lower Detour-Detour-Sunday Lakes region. Extensive staking was aso carried out in adjoining portions of Quebec. Due to the usua probems of sparse outcrop in the cay bet of the Cochrane area, the main exporation approach to date has been airborne geophysics foowed by ground geophysics and diamond driing of EM conductors. Some companies in the area at present are empoying overburden driing as an ex poration too. 5.4 Detour God Deposit Introduction The foowing comments and descriptions are based argey on a paper deivered by A.C. Jackson of Amoco

10 at the 1980 C1M annua meeting in Toronto, the Dome Mines Ltd annua report and G. John's Ontario Government report Geoogy and Mineraization In the immediate vicinity of the deposit, the strati graphic sequence, as known, consists of severa hundred to severa thousand feet of fine-grained arkosic and graphitic sediments with occasiona inter bedded basatic to utramafic fows and tuffs. This grades upward into a sequence of interbedded mafic tuffs and sediments approximatey 310 m (1,000 feet) in thickness, with the mafic tuffs being predominant. This, in turn, is overain by a distinctive varioitic basat sequence which is up to 90 m (300 ft) thick. This basat consists of 10% to 15% fesic cots set in a choritic to amphiboitic groundmass. Within this unit there are severa narrow (severa cm thick) interbeds of pinkish cooured chert. The varioitic sequence is overain by a very we banded sequence of mafic tuffs up to 30 m (100 ft) thick. These are choritic and biotitic and are characterized by aternating ight-dark beds up to 2 cm in thickness.

The mafic tuffs are overain by a series of utramafic fows and tuffs which vary in thickness from 3 m to 90 m. In the thicker portions, these rocks appear quite massive, varying from finey crystaine taccarbonate rocks to medium to coarsey crystaine 11 tremoite-actinoite tac-carbonate units. The thinner parts of the unit are usuay very we-banded and appear to be tuffs as they contain numerous reict fragments. carbonate. These are aso highy atered to tac- etrographicay, the utramafic is typi cay made up of 50?; tac, ID-% tremoite, ID-15% chorite and 5% suphides and magnetite. Severa quartz-eye porphyry units occur in the centra part of the utramafic. These units are generay foiated and in some cases appear tuffaceous but their somewhat irreguar nature and the often choritic con tacts suggest that they are dikes. etrographicay, the porphyry consists of 60-70% quartz and potash fedspar occurring as a fine-grained ground mass and aso as arger phenocrysts. Foiated stringers of muscovite comprise up to 15% of the rock aong with variabe amounts of chorite, biotite, and carbonate. yrrhotite with minor pyrite occurs as irreguar masses and comprises up to 5% of the rock. Two other

12 units found within the utramafics consist of coarsey crystaine gabbroic and pyroxenitic intrusives. The gabbro is non-magnetic and has been argey atered to tremoite and chorite. The pyroxenite is highy mag- netic and is characterized by arge pseudomorphs of ^ tremoite and magnetite after oivine or pyroxene. This unit forms a arge mass on the eastern end of the main Detour ore zone and is indicated by a arge mag netic high. The utramafic unit is overain by a cherty tuff which is generay from 0.3 m to 3 m but usuay ess than 1.5m thick. It is a creamy grey, very we aminated chert. The ower contact is usuay marked by a 0.3 m to 0.6 m band of pyrrhotite with minor chacopyrite. These suphides usuay contain rounded incusions of quartz from cm to 5 cm in diameter. The cherty tuff is overain by severa tens of to hundreds of metres of basatic fows with occasiona interbedded dacitic to andesitic fows and tuffs. The first 150 m to 0 m of the basats are massive to moderatey foiated, medium to coarsey crystaine rocks. They typicay consist of SO-60% hornbende, 10?; biotite, S-15% pagiocase, 5?; quartz, 3% chorite, 2% carbonate, and 1-3?, pyrrhotite.

Intrusive into the sequence, particuary east of the deposit, are severa magnetic dioritic sis. 13 The "main zone" of god mineraization is essentiay an auriferous quartz fracture zone. It is centred on the cherty tuff unit and the immediatey overying basats. God vaues extend beneath the cherty tuff into the underying atered utramafics. The main quartz fracture zone has an indicated strike ength of 210 m to 275 m {700 to 900 ft). It is some what arcuate in pan with strikes varying from eastwest in the west to northeast-southwest in the east. The mineraized zone punges 35 to 45 degrees to the west. The main zone is generay 6 m to 12 m (-40 ft) in width and consists of a system of quartz veins which contain Q-15% pyrrhotite, Q.5-1% chacopyrite and -5% pyrite within the veins and as sevages. The zone is characterized by extensive biotite ateration of the basats. The quartz veins are generay ess than 15 cm in width and average 3 to 5 veins per 1.5 m through the zone. The god occurs mainy as free grains within the quartz veins and suphide sevages.

A sma amount aso occurs in god-siver teurides. God partices are usuay 10 to 12 microns in size 14 and are often adhered to suphide grains. Other su phides commony encountered are marcasite and various bismuth and ead teurides. Severa other zones of mineraization have been indi cated but are ess we-defined than the main zone. Four zones were indicated in the hanging wa basats above the main zone and are referred to as the quartz- vein zones. The mineraization in these is simiar to the main zone in that the god is within quartz veins with associated pyrrhotites and chacopyrite and bio tite sevages. Most of these quartz-vein zones have been interpreted to occur in structures that parae the main zone. There are aso severa zones of mineraization indi cated in the tac-carbonate rocks. In these zones the god occurs as bebs and specks within the rock in cose association with pyrrhotite and chacopyrite. Quartz veins are occasionay present but are not es sentia for the presence of god. These tac- carbonate zones occur aong the punging hinge ine of the subsidiary warp containing the main zone.

Mining resent reserves are quoted at 30 miion tons averaging approximatey 0.1 oz Au per ton. Current pans ca for production to start in the fa of 1983 at 00 tons per day. Initia production wi be by open pit, stripping on which wi commence in eary 1982.

AIRBORNE GEOHYSICAL SURVEYS 6. Equipment Based on information suppied by Questor, the survey aircraft is equipped with a Mark VI INUT airborne E.M. system and Sonotek 5010 roton Magnetometer. Radar atimeters are used for vertica contro. The outputs of these instruments together with fiducia timing marks are recorded by means of gavanometer type recorders using ight sensitive paper. Thirty-five miimeter continuous strip cameras are used to record the actua fight path Barringer/Questor Mark IV Input System In the Induced use Transient (INUT) system, cur rents are induced into the ground by means of a pused primary eectromagnetic fied which is generated in a transmitting oop around the aircraft. By using haf sine wave current puses and a oop of arge turns- area, the high output power needed for deep penetra tion is achieved. The induced current in a conductor produces a secon dary eectomagnetic fied which is detected and measured after the termination of each primary puse. Detection is accompished by means of a receiving coi

17 towed behind the aircraft on four hundred feet of cabe. The received signa is processed and recorded by equipment in the aircraft. Since the measurements are in the time domain rather than the frequency domain common to continuous wave systems, interference effects of the primary transmitted fied are eimi nated. The secondary fied is in the form of a de caying votage transient originating in time at the termination of the transmitted puse. The ampitude of the transient is, of course, proportiona to the amount of current induced into the conductor and, in turn, this current is proportiona to the dimensions, the conductivity and the depth beneath the aircraft. The rate of decay of the transient is inversey pro portiona to conductivity. By samping the decay curve at six different time intervas, and recording the ampitude of each sampe, an estimate of the rea tive conductivity can be obtained. By this means, it is possibe to discriminate between the effects due to conductive near-surface materias such as swamps and ake bottom sits, and those due to genuine bedrock sources. The transients due to strong conductors such as suphides exhibit ong decay curves and are there fore commony recorded on a six channes. Sheet-

18 ike surface materias, on the other hand, have short decay curves and wi normay ony show a response in the first two or three channes. The sampes, or gates, are positioned at 310, 490, 760, 11, 1570 and 2110 micro-seconds after the ces sation of the puse. The widths of the gates are 180, 180, 360, 540 and 540 micro-seconds respectivey. For homogenous conditions, the transient decay wi be exponentia and the time constant of decay is equa to the time difference at two successive samping points divided by the og ratio of the ampitudes at these points Sonotek.M.H roton Magnetometer The magnetometers which measure the tota magnetic fied have a sensitivity of gamma and a range from,000 gammas to 100,000 gammas. B Because of the high intensity fied produced by the INUT transmitter, the magnetometer resuts are re- I corded on a time-sharing basis. The magnetometer head is energized for 0.83 seconds whie the preci- " sion frequency is being recorded and converted to

19 gammas. Thus a magnetic reading is taken every 1.13 seconds. For this survey, a ag factor has been appied to the data. Magnetic data recorded on the anaogue records 6.2 Data resentation at fiducia for exampe woud be potted at fiducia 9.95 on the mosaics. B B The symbos used to designate the anomaies are shown in the egend on each map sheet, and the anomaies on each ine are ettered in aphabetica order in the direction of fight, Their ocations are potted with reference to the fiducia numbers on the anaog record. M A sampe record is incuded to indicate the method used for correcting the position of the E.M. bird and to identify the parameters that are recorded. 6.3 Genera Interpretation The INUT system wi respond to conductive overburden and near-surface horizonta conducting ayers in addition to bed- I rock conductors. Differentiation is based on the rate of transient decay, magnetic correation and the anomay shape together with the conductor pattern and topography.

ower ines sometimes produce spurious anomaies but these can be identified by reference to the monitor channe. Rairoad and pipeine responses are recognized by studying the fim strips. Graphite or carbonaceous materia exhibits a wide range of conductivity. When ong conductors without magnetic corre ation are ocated on or parae to known fauts or photo graphic inears, graphite is most ikey the cause. Contact zones can often be predicted when anomay trends coincide with the ines of maximum gradient aong a fanking magnetic anomay. It is unfortunate that graphite can aso occur as reativey short conductors and produce attractive ooking anomaies. With no other information than the air borne resuts, these must be examined on the ground. Serpentinized peridotites often produce anomaies with a character that is fairy easy to recognize. The conductivity which is probaby caused in part by magnetite, is fairy ow so that the anomaies often have fairy arge response on channe # 1; they decay rapidy, and they have stong magneitc correation. INUT E.M. anomaies over massive magnetites show a reationship to the tota Fe content. Beow 25-30*,

m very itte or no response at a is obtained, but as the percentage increases the anomaies become quite strong with a characteristic rate of decay which is usuay greater than that produced by massive suphides. m Commercia suphide ore bodies are rare, and those that res pond to airborne survey methods usuay have medium to high conductivity. Limited atera dimensions are to be expected and many have magnetic correation caused by magnetite or B pyrrhotite. rovided that the ore bodies do not occur within B formationa conductive zones as mentioned above, the ano maies caused by them wi usuay be recognized on an E.M. map as priority targets. 6.4 Resuts and Interpretation INUT Survey Survey resuts are presented on Map at the rear of this report. ' The airborne eectromagnetic survey ocated severa major INUT conductive zones. Trends in genera are north-south shifting towards a predominenty east-west trend in the east portion of the caim area.

The INUT conductors have been designated A1-A4, B and C for purposes of discussion. 22 The INUT axis in the northwest portion of the bock (conductor A) shows strong, generay 6-channe res ponses over its centra portion with arge conductivity thickness products (to 77 Siemens). A northwest dip is indicated. The northernmost 75% of the conductor crosscuts but appears generay unreated to a arge ovoid magnetic high. The southwesternmost portion, immediatey above an inferred faut truncation has a direct magnetic correation of up to 150 gammas. A hoe dried in 1959 in the centra portion of the conductor by the Kesagami Syndicate intersected suphide-oxide iron formation fanked by a graphitic metasedimentary zone. Conductor A is therefore inter preted to be due to additiona amounts of this materia. Our interpretation indicates that conductor A2, imme diatey to the east, is the continuation of A around the nose of an anticine, the axis of which trends

23 M I north-northwest through the sma ake at the north edge of the caims. To the south, zones A3 and A4 represent additiona axes within the same genera trend. Trends become uncertain towards the south edge of the im property and individua axes have not been interpreted. There is an interpreteted major faut disruption of the 'A 1 conductive zone in the southwest portion of the property. The 'A 1 INUT anomaies have simiar characteristics, namey strong (generay 6-channe) responses, moderate to high conductivity thickness and direct to fanking magnetic correations of up to severa thousand gammas m (particuariy A2, A3). Large channe 2 ampitudes attest to reativey shaow depths of buria. Dispo- I sition of INUT intercepts indicates a west dip for A and east dips for A2, A3 and A4 in accord with the interpretation of an anticina fod. revious driing southwest, west and northwest of Vandette Lake by Conwest and others and recent geoo gica mapping indicate that the INUT conductivity is

M reated to units of mixed suphide-oxide facies iron formation within predominanty mafic metavocanics. These units consist of variabe magnetite and chert aong with pyrrhotite and pyrite with traces of chaco- pyrite and sphaerite. Individua interfow units may I m be up to 25 feet or more in thickness athough are often ess than 10 feet. These are at east 5 stratigraphicay discrete units within an 800 meter strati graphic section. INUT Conductor 'B' is a major composite conductor which crosses the entire property. Strikes in the south are north-south swinging to east-west in the region directy east of Vandette Lake. At east one 8 and up to three discrete axes are present. Dips are m generay to the east athough one dip, at the south end of Vandette Lake, is to the northwest. Responses are generay in the three to six-channe range. Areas of high conductivity-thickness are ocated to the B southwest of Vandette Lake and a oca area to the east B around caim There are no notabe direct mag netic correations athough reativey weak, fanking correations are present particuary aong the conductor southwest of Vandette Lake.

M revious driing immediatey southwest of Vandette Lake by Amoco and others indicates that the main cause I of conductivity here is graphitic metasediments aong with minor suphides. It is probabe that this conductor marks a major regiona graphitic unit. INUT trend 'C' is an incompetey-defined feature in the extreme southeast portion of the property. The conductor is indicated to strike northwest and dip southwest. A substantia (919 gamma) magnetic anomay m is very neary coincident with the EM intercept near the midde of caim The cause of the anomay is uncertain athough the magnetic correation may indicate a suphide source. m There are other weak scattered responses in the caim area as in the southwest (caim ) and extreme north (caims , 165). The cause of these anoma ies is uncertain. m Magnetic Survey The most prominent magnetic feature is the intense, north-trending faut-disrupted inear high in the west portion of the property refecting magnetite-pyrrhotite iron formation.

26 M Very steep gradients indicate a shaow depth to source. The iron formation is known to outcrop in at east two areas west of Vandette Lake. Disposition of isomagnetic contours in the southernmost sector of the anomay indicates a steep east dip in support of EMindicated dips. The anomay has a maximum magnetic reief of approxi matey 00 gammas above oca background. m The iron formation is interpreted to have been dis rupted by east-west and north-south fauts in severa paces to produce the presenty observed disjointed pattern. H The contribution of iron formation to the arge ovoid high in the northwest corner is uncertain. The form of this anomay is distincty different from that over outcropping iron formation to the south. It is sug- " gestive of a more deepy buried mafic pug. This type of magnetic signature may be consistent, however, with the interpretation that this area repre sents a north-punging anticina fod cosure in iron formation.

INUT conductive trend 'B' has a fanking to direct, discontinuous magnetic correation over most of its 27 ength. The magnetic anomay appears as an eongated zone consisting of a series of discrete "eyeba" highs. Anomay ampitudes are generay 75 to 180 gammas. The anomaies are interpreted to represent pyrrhotitic zones within the graphite-suphide iron formation conductive trend. The other major magnetic anomay is in the vicinity of INUT conductor C. This magnetic feature is incomp etey defined athough it is suggested that the cau sative source may be a suphide-oxide iron formation anaagous (equivaent?) to that to the northwest. Weak INUT intercepts on caim in the southwest portion of the property occur on the east fank of a oca eiptica magnetic high. The magnetic anomay is probaby representative of a magnetic-bearing mafic body, possiby intrusive, which may enhance the eco nomic attractiveness of the INUT anomay. Likewise a very short, weak INUT conductor in the northeast por tion of the property (caim ) is coincident with a very oca, circuar magnetic high of 60 gammas.

28 B There are no other magnetic features on the property which appear to have any immediate economic significance.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Airborne geophysica surveys (INUT, magnetics) have been comp eted on a 189 caim property in the Detour Lake area of north eastern Ontario on behaf of Getty Canadian Metas, Limited. The surveys were successfu in ocating three main zones of anoma ous eectromagnetic-magnetic responses with severa ess promi nent features. The major EM 4- magnetic anomaies are due to su phide-oxide and suphide-graphite iron formations. Minor amounts of copper and zinc are indicated by previous driing. It does not appear that these zones have been fuy tested by pre vious operators. These iron formations are considered to be prime god exporation targets considering the universa association of these rocks with god deposits. It is recommended that a comprehensive review of a previous work be undertaken to, in conjunction with the airborne surveys, seect areas for detaied ground foow-up.
