This publicatin can be dwnladed frm Atikkan Mineral Develpment Initiative The Atikkan Mineral Develpment Initiative is a prject managed by the Ontari Prspectrs Assciatin fr the Twnship f Atikkan. The Initiative is intended t prvide a better understanding f the mineral resurce ptential f targeted areas in the vicinity f the Atikkan cmmunity thrugh the cllectin and analysis f gescience data and thrugh the marketing f these data t the minerals industry. 2

3 Intrductin The Atikkan Mineral Develpment Initiative (AMDI) is an initiative designed t stimulate explratin fr and eventual develpment f mineral depsits within the Atikkan area. The AMDI cmpilatin prject was designed t prvide the general user with a fairly cmplete library f the wrk that has been dne in the Atikkan area t date. This cmpilatin prvides the user with a data set that can be used t further explre a square kilmetre area centered rughly n the twn f Atikkan. The target clients f this cmpilatin include, but are nt limited t: prspectrs, explratin gelgists, mine gelgists and envirnmental gescientists. The cmpilatin is a synthesis f ver 60 individual publicatins frm the Ontari Gelgical Survey s (OGS) library f Miscellaneus Releases f Data, Open File Reprts, Gephysical Data Sets, Earth Resurces and Land Infrmatin Data Sets and Preliminary Maps. Other relevant data sets and maps riginate frm different rganizatins, such as the Gelgical Survey f Canada. Due t the size f the cmplete data sets it was nt efficient t include all f them in the cmpilatin in their entirety, althugh an attempt has been made t d s. Raw data files can be btained frm the riginal publicatins. Other relevant data that has nt been cmpiled is listed in appendices. The cmpilatin was prduced as an ESRI ArcMap TM versin 9.3 map dcument (.mxd file), but ther files have als been prvided t supprt ArcMap TM versins 8.3, 9.0 & 9.1, and 9.2. The cmpilatin has als been cmpiled in ESRI ArcReader TM frmat t allw end users withut a cpy f ArcGIS t view the data as it was intended. The ArcMap TM map dcument file and assciated layer (.lyr) and shapefiles (.shp) require a licensed versin f ESRI ArcGIS sftware, whereas the ArcReader file (.pmf) can be pened using the freely available ESRI ArcReader TM sftware package. The latest versin f ArcReader TM can be dwnladed frm the ESRI website ( Gephysical Data Set grid files (.grd) have been packaged int Gesft Oasis Mntaj prject files (.gpf), which can be pened using the cmmercially licensed versin f Oasis Mntaj r the free dwnladable Oasis Mntaj Viewer. General Instructins This cmpilatin cntains images, text dcuments, and prject files in many different frmats. The fllwing sectin describes hw t view the data in the file frmats prvided. Dcuments Images Files designated with a.txt extensin are simple MS-DOS text files and can be pened using Ntepad, Micrsft Wrd, r any similar text editr. Files with a.dc extensin can be pened using Micrsft Wrd r WrdPad. Files with a.pdf extensin can be pened with Adbe Reader, which can be dwnladed fr free frm Adbe s website. Files with a.jpg extensin can be pened in a web brwser r any image viewing r editing sftware such as Windws Picture and Fax Viewer, CrelDRAW, r Adbe Phtshp. Files with a.tif extensin can als be pened in a web brwser r any image viewing r editing sftware such as Windws Picture and Fax Viewer, CrelDRAW, r Adbe Phtshp. Hwever, files with the.tif extensin are usually GeTIFFs that cntain spatial infrmatin and shuld be pened using GIS sftware such as ESRI ArcGIS. 3

4 Files with a.grd extensin are Gesft Clur Grid files and are best viewed using Oasis Mntaj Viewer, a free prgram available frm the Gesft website ( Gesft Clur Grids can be pened in ArcGIS, but the Gesft Plug-In fr ArcGIS shuld first be dwnladed and installed frm the Gesft website. ArcGIS Instructins Files with an.mxd extensin can be pened with ArcMap TM. The versin f ArcMap TM required t pen the ArcMap TM dcument has been appended t the end f the ArcMap TM dcument file name. Files with an.shp extensin are ESRI shapefiles that cntain pint, line r plygn data alng with assciated attributes. Shapefiles, alng with their metadata, can be viewed using a prgram such as ESRI ArcCatalg TM, r can be incrprated int a map using ESRI ArcMap TM. Files with an.lyr extensin are ESRI layer files that cntain infrmatin abut hw t display a shapefile r grup f shapefiles (clur shading, naming, labeling prperties, etc.). Layer files d nt cntain gespatial infrmatin. Layer files, alng with their metadata, can be viewed using a prgram such as ESRI ArcCatalg TM, r can be incrprated int a map in ESRI ArcMap TM. The AMDI cmpilatin was assembled using ArcGIS versin 9.3. T gain the full functinality f the cmpilatin, ArcGIS versin 9.3 shuld be used. Knwledge Requirements A general wrking knwledge f ArcGIS is required t gain the full benefit f this cmpilatin. Perfrmance Enhancement T significantly increase the perfrmance f this cmpilatin, the entire cntents shuld be cpied frm the DVD t a flder n the hard drive f the user s cmputer. This will require up t 10 Gb f space n the hard drive. Data Structure 1) \ArcGIS_Cmpilatin\ This flder cntains all ArcMap dcument files and related shapefile and layer files. There are nly fur premade map dcuments prvided with the cmpilatin, each having fur cpies. All are identical and differ nly in the versin f ArcMap TM required t pen them (8.3, 9.0 & 9.1, 9.2 r 9.3). Each map dcument cntains all gespatial data included in the cmpilatin fr display. Map sizes are appended at the end f name f the file. The master cmpilatin is laid ut as an 80 by 40 map. While physically large, this enables the user t view and plt the cmpilatin in its entirety while still maintaining a reasnable scale (1: ). Other map sizes included in the cmpilatin are ANSI D, ANSI E, and ANSI F. T make the data structure f the cmpilatin manageable and understandable, an attempt has been made t name layer files and place flders s that data can be lcated simply by knwing where it is in the Table f Cntents (the left-hand viewing pane) in ArcGIS r ArcReader TM. In the Table f Cntents there are 9 categries, each with a crrespnding flder in the \ArcGIS_Cmpilatin\ flder. Within each f thse flders is an apprpriately named layer file that is 4

5 prefixed with the number 00. The number 00 as a prefix indicates that the layer file is the highest in the hierarchy f layer grups. Fr example, if ne was t expand the Gelgy grup and then the OGS 1: Ontari Bedrck Mapping Cmpilatin grup under it, ne wuld see the fllwing in ArcMap TM : Ging int the \ArcGIS_Cmpilatin\ flder within ArcCatalg TM and expanding the Gelgy flder, the fllwing is displayed: As shwn abve, left-mst items in the table f cntents have layer file names beginning with 00 and cntain all layers and gruped layers under them. The grup(s) r layers falling under (hierarchically) the grup layers prefixed with 00 are prefixed with 10, the grup(s) r layers under these are prefixed with 20 and s n. This allws the user t quickly find a layer r grup layer in ArcCatalg TM, and t quickly build their wn maps using nly the layers r layer grups they need. 5

6 2) \ArcReader_Cmpilatin\ This flder cntains all ArcReader TM published maps (fund in the \pmf\ subflder) and related data files (fund in the \data\ subflder). The ArcReader TM files are meant t be pened with ArcReader TM, a free GIS viewing envirnment available frm the ESRI website ( Data fund in the data subdirectries is unrganized and is a prduct f the generatin f ArcReader TM packages. All f this data can be fund in a mre rganized lcatin under the \ArcGIS_Cmpilatin\ flder. T gain full functinality f the cmpilatin, a cmmercial versin f ArcGIS is recmmended. 3) \Data\ This flder cntains all data assciated with the cmpilatins that are nt displayed in the map dcuments. This includes Open File Reprts assciated with the Miscellaneus Releases f Data (MRDs) displayed in the cmpilatin, the riginal MRDs themselves, OGS 1: maps in Adbe PDF frmat, and riginal gephysical data with accmpanying reprts. Gephysical data has been packaged int a Gesft Prject File (.gpf) t allw viewing using the Oasis Mntaj Viewer, a free prgram available frm the Gesft website ( Gephysical data has been included in this fashin since, due t size, nly the Ontari Leveled Ttal Magnetic Field (regular and hillshaded) and First (r Secnd) Vertical Derivative magnetic data has been included fr display in the cmpilatin. 6
