The dcument, Z39.50 Interperability Testing Framewrk fr Online Library Catalgs Using Radiactive MARC Recrds describes an verview f the interperability testing apprach being used in Z-Interp2. Other preliminary dcuments have identified search requirements and tken requirements fr the data values f MARC fields and subfields. Tw Z prfiles listed belw prvide the specificatins that are the basis fr the test searches used in the interperability testing: ANSO/NISO Z39.89, The U.S. Natinal Z39.50 Prfile fr Library Applicatins, < Bath Prfile: An Internatinal Z39.50 Specificatin fr Library Applicatins and Resurce Discvery (Release 2.0) < Searches defined at Level 0 and Level 1 require apprpriate RadMARC recrds fr the test searches. In additin, different types f recrds (as indicated in the MARC Leader/06) are needed since systems may index MARC fields/subfields differently depending n the type f recrd. Finally, the RadMARC recrds need t be clearly identified as t the type f searching they are intended t assess, and therefre sme versin infrmatin abut each recrd shuld be included in the recrd. 2 This dcument prvides the preliminary specificatins fr the different RadMARC recrds t be created fr use in the Z-Interp2 interperability testbed. Experience with these recrds may result in revisins t the specificatins. 2. Types f Recrds MARC recrds can describe different types and frmats f bibligraphic materials. MARC Leader/06 indicates the type f recrd (i.e., the infrmatin bject type being described by the MARC recrd). The Angl-American Catalguing Rules (AACR), the standard fr descriptive catalging, specifies rules fr describing different types f materials. MARC Leader/07 indicates the bibligraphic level f the recrd. The table belw shws the values f the MARC Leader/06, Leader/07, and the AACR categries f materials t shw the cmplexity f cding and labeling fr what the MARC recrds describe. In the prpsal fr extensin t the Z-Interp Prject, we prpsed t deal with the frmats f material as addressed by AACR. These are fund in the third clumn f the table abve. In sme cases, tw cde values in the Leader/06 are addressed by the same AACR frmat f material. Additinally, the Leader/06 desn t indicate if the material is a serial publicatin (r Cntinuing Resurce). Fr this, the Leader/07 Bibligraphic Level indicates serial with a value f s. T summarize, the types f recrds r materials fr which RadMARC recrds will be created will address thse in the table belw, which als prvides the values fr the Leader/06 and Leader/07 as apprpriate. 3 Categry f Material Described by RadMARC recrd Leader/06 Value Leader/07 Value Bks, Pamphlets, and Printed Sheets a Cntinuing Resurces a s Music (Ntated and manuscript music) c Cartgraphic Materials e Mtin pictures and vide-recrdings (including digital and g nn-digital) Sund Recrdings (musical and nn-musical) j Electrnic Resurces m Graphic materials (includes mixed materials, with r withut p archival cntrl) Three Dimensinal Artifacts and Realia r Manuscripts (including manuscript cllectins) t While there will likely be cmmnality f many fields acrss the types f recrds, and in the indexable fields t supprt the prfile-defined searches, we will create at least ne instance f a RadMARC recrd fr each f the 10 types f recrds. 3. Recrd Identificatin and Versin Infrmatin Each RadMARC recrd will be uniquely identified and each versin f the recrd will be nted. The fllwing methds fr identifying and describing each recrd within the recrd will be used. 3.1 Use f the 001 MARC 001 is the Cntrl Number field, a nn-repeatable field with the fllwing definitin: The cntrl number assigned by the rganizatin creating, using, r distributing the recrd. The MARC cde fr the rganizatin is cntained in field 003 (Cntrl Number Identifier) This is a standard field in MARC recrds. In sme systems, when a recrd frm sme ther catalging surce is laded int the bibligraphic database, the number in the 001 is mved t the 035. The 035 is the System Cntrl Number field, a repeatable field with the fllwing definitin: A cntrl number f a system ther than the ne whse cntrl number is cntained in field 001 (Cntrl Number), field 010 (Library f Cngress Cntrl Number) r field 016 (Natinal Bibligraphic Agency Cntrl Number). Nt all systems mve the number frm the 001, especially if it is an OCLC number. (Once we get the RadMARC recrds created, we will cntact OCLC t see if they wuld be interested in allwing us t put these recrds int the WrldCat database, at which time they wuld receive a true OCLC number.) Fr the initial set f RadMARC recrds, the Cntrl Number will have a cded structure as fllws: Characters 1-10: Prject signature fr the recrd; value = UNTRadMARC Characters 11-13: Sequential number with left padding; value begins at 001 and cntinues sequentially fr subsequent recrds. An example f this is: UNTRadMARC001, UNTRadMARC002, etc. 3.2 Use f the 040 MARC 040 is the Catalging Surce field, a nn-repeatable field with the fllwing definitin: The MARC cde fr r the name f the rganizatin(s) that created the riginal bibligraphic recrd, assigned MARC cntent designatin and transcribed the recrd int machine-readable frm, r Men 3 Draft January 1, 2005

4 mdified (except fr the additin f hldings symbls) an existing MARC recrd. These data and the cde in 008/39 (Catalging surce) specify the parties respnsible fr the bibligraphic recrd. MARC 040 defines several subfields, and the RadMARC recrds will use nly subfield a, defined as Original Catalging Agency. Fr the initial set f RadMARC recrds, the Catalging Surce will have a cde t represent the Z39.50 Interperability Testbed Prject in the frm f: ZinterpUNT When laded int a remte system, this value is nt likely t be changed and prvides ne mre place t indicate the surce f these special MARC recrds. 3.3 Use f the 583 T recrd versin and ther infrmatin abut each RADMARC recrds, we prpse t use MARC 583, the Actin Nte field, a repeatable field with the fllwing definitin: A cpy-specific field that cntains infrmatin abut prcessing, reference, and preservatin actins. MARC 583 has a sufficient number f subfield structures t enable the recrding f the fllwing types f infrmatin: Signature Identifier Versin Descriptin Scheme Threshld Recrd Creatr This, hwever, means that we will revise the meaning f the 583 subfield cdes as fllws: a - Actin RadMARC semantics: <signature> a cnstant string -- that is always the same fr every RadMARC recrd. Value = RadMARC b - Actin identificatin RadMARC semantics: <identifier> any string that is "as unique as pssible". Will use dmain name fr prject < and a sequential number (which is the same numeric value as in the 001). Value = etc. d - Actin interval RadMARC semantics: <versin> is an integer, beginning at 1 fr the initial versin f the recrd and incremented by 1 in each subsequent versin. e - Cntingency fr actin RadMARC semantics: <scheme> identifies uniquely the type f search r ther parameters describing the recrd in the cntext f interperability testing. Value will be defined fr the RadMARC recrds prduced by the Z-Interp2 Prject. i - Methd f actin RadMARC semantics: <scheme dependent infrmatin> includes scheme dependent infrmatin regarding this particular recrd. Value will be defined fr the RadMARC recrds prduced by the Z-Interp2 Prject. $k - Actin agent (R) RadMARC semantics: <recrd creatr> cntains the name f the persn creating the RadMARC recrd Value = name f persn creating recrd Men 4 Draft January 1, 2005

5 x - Nnpublic nte RadMARC semantics: <descriptin> is arbitrary human-readable text describing the prvenance and intent f the recrd, and perhaps even including things like a versin-cntrl lg describing its histry. Value will be standardized t the extent pssible alng the lines f: "This is a specially created test recrd the Z-Interp2 Prject under the directin f the Texas Center fr Digital Knwledge at the University f Nrth Texas. Cntact Dr. William E. Men via fr infrmatin abut this prject at <wemen@unt.edu>. This particular recrd supprts testing related t a Bks, Pamphlets, and Printed Sheets type f recrd that was created t supprt test searches fr authr, title, subject, and any prfile-defined searches, where the threshld f ccurrence f the indexable cntent designatin being ppulated in the recrd is 1 fr ccurrences f mre than 100,000 times, and this is the first versin f this recrd." 3.4 Example f Use The fllwing shws an example f a RadMARC recrd using the abve specificatins fr identificatin, versin, and ther infrmatin: 001 UNTRadMARC $a ZinterpUNT 583 $a RadMARC $b $d 1 $e ATS $i 1 $k JungWn Yn $x This is a specially created test recrd the Z-Interp2 Prject under the directin f the Texas Center fr Digital Knwledge at the University f Nrth Texas. Cntact Dr. William E. Men via fr infrmatin abut this prject at <wemen@unt.edu>. This particular recrd supprts testing related t a Bks, Pamphlets, and Printed Sheets type f recrd that was created t supprt test searches fr authr, title, subject, and any prfile-defined searches, where the threshld f ccurrence f the indexable cntent designatin being ppulated in the recrd is 19, fr the 19 mst cmmnly ccurring indexable authr, title, and subject fields. This is the first versin f this recrd. 4. Frmat f the Tkens The cre f the RadMARC recrds is specially designed tkens that ppulate each indexable field/subfield. A tken is a string f characters that has a specific structure and semantics that will serve as wrds r ther data values in specific RadMARC field/subfield. A field/subfield may have a sequence f tkens. The fllwing structure results in cntent-rich tken elements. A single alpha character fr left-hand padding. Value = r A single alpha character t indicate the frmat f the material being described r type f recrd Value = Selected values as defined in MARC Leader/06 Type f Recrd r the Leader/07 Bibligraphic Level t represent the 10 categries f materials discussed in Sectin 2 as fllws: Leader/06 a - Language material Includes printed, micrfrm, and electrnic language material. Leader/06 c - Ntated music Includes micrfrm and electrnic ntated music. Leader/06 e - Cartgraphic material Includes maps, atlases, glbes, digital maps, and ther cartgraphic items. Leader/06 g - Prjected medium Examples include: mtin pictures, vide recrdings (including digital vide), filmstrips, slides, transparencies, r material specifically designed fr prjectin. Leader/06 j - Musical sund recrding Examples include: phndiscs, cmpact discs, r cassette tapes. Leader/06 m - Cmputer file Includes the fllwing classes f electrnic resurces: cmputer sftware (including prgrams, games, fnts), numeric data, cmputer-riented multimedia, Men 5 Draft January 1, 2005

Fr these classes f materials, if there is a significant aspect that causes it t fall int anther Leader/06 categry, the cde fr that significant aspect is used instead f cde m (e.g., vectr data that is cartgraphic is nt cded as numeric but cartgraphic). Other classes f electrnic resurces are cded fr their mst significant aspect (e.g., language material, graphic, cartgraphic material, sund, music, mving image). In case f dubt r if the mst significant aspect cannt be determined, cnsider the item a cmputer file. Leader/06 p - Mixed material Indicates that there are significant materials in tw r mre frms that are usually related by virtue f their having been accumulated by r abut a persn r bdy. Includes archival fnds and manuscript cllectins f mixed frms f materials, such as text, phtgraphs, and sund recrdings. Leader/06 r - Three-dimensinal artifact r naturally ccurring bject Includes man-made bjects, such as mdels, diramas, games, puzzles, simulatins, sculptures and ther three-dimensinal art wrks and their reprductins, exhibits, machines, clthing, tys, and stitchery, and naturally ccurring bjects, such as micrscpe specimens and ther specimens munted fr viewing. Leader/06 t - Manuscript language material Leader/07 s - Indicating a serial r cntinuing resurce Three numbers indicating the Field Tag Value = Defined in MARC 21 specificatins A single integer t indicate number f ccurrence the Field Tag Value = Sequential number starting with 1 A single alpha character t indicate the Subfield Cde Value = Defined in MARC 21 specificatins Nte: Even thugh sme subfields in specific fields can repeat, the current tken frmat des nt allw specificatin f the ccurrence number f the subfield within the field. A single integer indicating the ffset within subfield Value = Use the fllwing scheme: 1=first tken in subfield, 2=secnd tken in subfield; 3= third tken in subfield, etc. A single alpha character fr right-hand padding Value = r And example tken element t shw this structure is: ra2451a1r. We can parse it as: r - Left-hand padding a - Type f recrd -- this is a Mngraph-type recrd Field cde 1 First ccurrence f field in recrd a - Subfield cde 1 - Offset within subfield -- 1=first tken in subfield r - Right-hand padding If there was a secnd instance f this field (in this example the 245), the tken element fr the secnd ccurrence wuld be rm2452a11r. An example f a cmplete MARC 245 with a sequence f tkens in selected subfields fllws: 245 $a rm2451a1r rm2451a2r rm2451a3r $b rm2451b1r rm2451b2r rm2451b3r $c rm2451c1r rm2451c2r In any given subfield, a sequence f tkens will nt exceed three tkens. The limitatin allws the apprpriate interperability testing f varius phrase-riented searches as defined in the prfiles withut adding undue cmplexity t the RadMARC recrds. Men 6 Draft January 1, 2005

7 5. RadMARC Recrds Required t Test, Title,, and Any Searches A number f sets f RadMARC recrds are required that will supprt the testing f prfiled-defined authr, title, subject, and any searches at Levels 0 and 1. In each set, there will be 10 separate recrds reflecting the different types f recrds r materials described. Each recrd in each set will cntain the exact same tkens except fr the secnd character f the tken element that will reflect the type f recrd r material. Fr example, the tken element in a 245 field fr: A Bks, Pamphlets, and Printed Sheets Language Material type recrd will be: ra2451a11r ra2451a21r ra2451a31r (which uses the Leader/06 cde a ) A Music (Ntated and manuscript music) type recrd will be: rc2451a11r rc2451a21r rc2451a31r (which used the Leader/06 cde c ) A Cntinuing Resurce type recrd will be: rs2451a11r rs2451a21r rs2451a31r (which used the Leader/07 cde s ) Our gal is t create several sets f RadMARC recrds that will have increasing levels f cntent designatin (i.e., the number f fields and subfields) included. The level f cntent designatin fr each set f recrds will be based n the fllwing specificatins (which may evlve based n experience): The threshld f ccurrence f indexable fields that resulted frm previus analysis undertaken in the first phase f the Z-Interp Prject. The threshld f ccurrence will determine which cntent designatin gets ppulated in each set f recrds. The threshld f ccurrence sets will be defined as fllws as indicated by Threshld f Occurrence Cde held in the 583 $i. : 1 = The 19 mst cmmnly ccurring indexable fields fr authr, title, and subject-related data as identified in the previus research. See Appendix A fr a list f these fields/subfields. 2 = The indexable fields fr authr, title, and subject-related data ccurring at least 1,000 times as identified in the previus research; apprximate number f these fields/subfields is: XXX. See Appendix B fr a list f these fields/subfields. 3 = All indexable fields fr authr, title, and subject-related data as identified in Z-Interp Prject indexing guidelines; apprximate number f these fields/subfields is: XXX. See the Z-Interp Indexing Guidelines fr the cmplete list f these fields/subfields. The indexable fields as listed in the Z-Interp Indexing Guidelines that are recmmended by the Prgram fr Cperative Catalging Bibligraphic Cre (BIBCO) Recrd Elements; apprximate number f these fields/subfields is: XXX. See Appendix C fr a list f these fields/subfields. With this arrangement, there will be fur sets f RadMARC recrds, with each set cntaining 10 recrds. 6. RadMARC Recrds Required t Test Standard Identifier Number Searches [t be cmpleted] 7. RadMARC Recrds Required t Test Qualifying Searches [t be cmpleted] 8. Recrd Creatin Prject staff will create RadMARC recrds accrding t the abve specificatins using MARC creatin sftware that prduces reliable and valid MARC recrds n exprt. Initially, the sftware t be used is MARC Magician, a PC-based applicatin that prvides the functinality needed. Pririty f creatin shuld be n the sets f recrds at Threshld f Occurrence Cde 1 and the BIBCO specificatins. The time needed t create each set f recrds shuld be recrded t get an understanding f the level f effrt needed. Men 7 Draft January 1, 2005

8 9. Testing and Editing the RadMARC Recrds in the Z-Interp Server The RadMARC recrds will be laded int the Z-Interp Testbed Server. The RadMARC recrds can be checked by searching the Z-Interp server with the Bkwhere client. The Bkwhere client allws us t set the attribute cmbinatin fr each f the prfile-defined searches. MARC Magician, unfrtunately, places the phrase [Dem Recrd] in each subfield that is ppulated. This phrase will need t be edited ut f each RadMARC recrd. The Sirsi Wrkflws client can be used t easily edit the RadMARC recrd. Once the recrds have been edited, the Index Data test harness can be used t run a trial set f searches and generate reprts. 10. Creating a File f RadMARC Recrds fr Other Targets Once the testing has been dne n the sets f RadMARC recrds, and any issues r prblems with the recrds have been reslved r edited away, each set f RadMARC recrds will be exprted frm the Z- Interp testbed server t create the authritative file f RadMARC recrds that can be used by ther targets t lad int their bibligraphic database fr interperability testing. Men 8 Draft January 1, 2005

9 Appendix A: List f Cntent Designatin fr Threshld f Occurrence Cde 1 Based n previus analysis, the Z-Interp Prject, Phase 1, identified the fllwing 19 fields/subfields frm the Z-Interp Indexing Guidelines as the mst cmmnly ccurring. This set f cntent designatin will be used t create the mst minimal versins f the RadMARC recrds. # Occurrences Marc 21 Field Subfield Descriptin Index 602, a added entry Tpical Term Subfield a = Tpical term r gegraphic name as entry element 419, a Title Statement Title Subfield a = Title 329, c Title Statement Subfield c = statement f respnsibility 326, x added entry Tpical Term Subfield x = General subdivisin 318, a Main entry Persnal Name Subfield a = persnal name 231, z added entry Tpical Term Subfield z = Gegraphic subdivisin 176, a Added entry Persnal Name Subfield a = persnal name 169, b Title Statement Title Subfield b = Remainder f title 149, d Main entry Persnal Name Subfield d = dates assciated with a name 118, x added entry Gegraphic Name Subfield x = General subdivisin 113, a added entry Gegraphic Name Subfield a = Gegraphic name 83, v added entry Tpical Term Subfield v = Frm subdivisin 74, d Added entry Persnal Name Subfield d = dates assciated with a name 69, a added entry Persnal Name Subfield a = persnal name 66, a Added entry Crprate Name Subfield a = crprate name r jurisdictin name 64, a Series Statement Added Entry Title Title Subfield a = title 62, a Series Statement Title Subfield a = Series statement 56, d added entry Persnal Name Subfield d = dates assciated with a name 55, a Index Term Uncntrlled Subfield a = the term William E.
