Being territrial, they are: Place-based (as in nn-unifrmly distributed in space) Depend n the lcal scietal, cultural and plitical cntexts, Depend n hw these cntexts interact with sci-ecnmic and envirnmental dynamics and changes. Accunt fr the basis f hw Eurpean regins differ in their pre-cnditins fr a transitin twards a green ecnmy. Are funded n and interactins between the physical, material, technlgical and spatial sides f green prductin and cnsumptin And structured thrugh scial, infrmatinal, ecnmic and plitical gals and ambitins as utlined thrugh the gals f territrial chesin and thrugh the interplay between different levels f multi-level gvernance fr plicy making and implementatin. 10 Green ecnmy perfrmance: a multi-criteria assessment Typlgy f reginal green ecnmic perfrmance The map shws the aggregatin f the perfrmance f the five spheres t ne single reginal green ecnmic perfrmance. The weights assigned t them are equal, i.e. each cre feature cntributes 20 percent t the verall perfrmance f a regin. The map classes are cmpsed f five quantiles which can be cnsidered as an aggregate typlgy f regins with respect t reginal green ecnmic perfrmance.

11 Perfrmance, Space and Territry Space/spatiality is a reflectins n the distributin f peple, material bjects (resurces) and activities (prcesses) in space, in which the spatial scale des NOT relate t anything ther than physical distances r areas. Territry/territriality als reflects n the distributin f peple, bjects (including man-made and natural resurces) and activities (including flws and prcesses) in space. The key difference is that the reflectin is structured thrugh a pattern f bundaries impsed by individuals r grups. This therefre mainly relates t the plitical sphere in terms f institutinal and/r administrative bundaries that are agreed upn in rder t manage peple, bjects (resurces) and activities in space. 11

12 Perfrmance, Space and Territry The territrial basis is cntingent n the clear recgnitin f the rle that human cnstructins, including plitical and administrative jurisdictins, cultural values, etc., have in shaping the understanding f place-based ptentials. Nt related thrugh simple determinism, but are ver time interrelated thrugh bth iterative and recursive prcesses. Cnsequently territry is in the GREECO prject seen as being dynamic due t that territrial change creates new spatial realities which are fed back int the plitical and decisin making prcesses. In this cntext it is imprtant t recgnize hw territry used t be characterized by mn-functinality. In the green perspective, hwever, it shuld be emphasized hw spatiality are determined by multi-functinality, and thereby requesting a need fr revisin f the understanding f territrial structures. 12
