Next up will be a trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for a three-game series against No. 15 Alabama. The University of Florida Athletic Department announced significant facility plans, to include program-changing upgrades to its current softball stadium, a new baseball ballpark on the southwest part of campus, and a new stand-alone football training complex in the location of the current baseball stadium. These projects, which combined are estimated to cost $130 million, are part of phases 2 and 3 of the University Athletic Association's Facilities Master Plan. Florida has only allowed a total of 41 runs over the course of the season so far. 19 of the 41 runs have been scored via the long ball and 11 of those were solo shots. Florida is coming off of a series of non-conference games this past weekend and picked up a pair of wins each both over Hampton (18-0 & 5-0) and Jacksonville (2-1 & 4-0). Aleshia Ocasio combined with freshman Natalie Lugo for the only the progams's second combine perfect game in history. The duo defeated Hampton in the five-inning game on just 59 pitches combined and seven strikeouts. Florida currently leads the nation with 23 shutouts over 36 games played this season. Since 2014, UF has led the nation in the category: 40 (2017), 31 (2016), 24 (2015) & 23 (2014). That's 141 shutouts over 301 games (46.8%). The Gators placed a league leading five on the 2018 Preseason All-SEC Team this season. Seniors Kayli Kvistad, Nicole DeWitt and Aleshia Ocasio joined juniors Kelly Barnhill and Amanda Lorenz on the squad. All five were selected as 2017 All-SEC First Team selections after having very productive seasons and Barnhill also earned 2017 SEC Pitcher of the Year honors. Last season the Gators had four student-athletes named NFCA All-Americans in Delanie Gourley, Kelly Barnhill, Kayli Kvistad and Amanda Lorenz. Three of the four return for the 2017 season which is tied for the most returning All-Americans by any NCAA DI program in the nation. Florida also has a fourth NFCA All-American on the roster as Aleshia Ocasio earned the honor in Barnhill and Lorenz landed on the Top 50 "Watch List" for the 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. Last season Barnhill became only the second sophomore ever (Cat Osterman, 2003) and second Gator (Lauren Haeger, 2015) ever to win the coveted award. 2 NOTES Walton Earns 800th Career Victory, Closes in on 700 at Florida Tim Walton achieved his 800th career victory during the Aquafina Invitational. He is currently averaging 50 wins a year and is in his 16th season as a head coach, 13th at Florida. Walton currently sits with a 698 wins during his tenure at Florida. Barnhill's No-Hitters & Perfect Game Junior right-handed pitcher Kelly Barnhill has already thrown five complete-game no-hitters which includes a perfect game this season. In her first of the season against North Florida (2/14), Barnhill only allowed one batter reach base the entire game as she hit a batter in the final inning. The Marietta, Ga. threw her second of the season and fourth of her career against Iowa State (2/24). Then the following day in her next start she hurled her first career perfect game against Georgia Southern (2/25). She has since thrown a combined no-hitter with Aleshia Ocasio against Baylor (3/3), her fourth complete-game no-hitter against Kentucky (3/9) and most recently a no-hitter against USF (3/21) No Free-Passes Against Ocasio Senior right-handed pitcher Aleshia Ocasio leads the nation in walks allowed per seven innings (0.44). Ocasio has tallied 93 strikeouts and only allowed four walks through 79.0 innings pitched. She likes to work the zone and rarely falls behind in the count against opposing batters. Matthews Mashes Her Way Into Lineup Freshman Jordan Matthews received her first collegiate at-bat against Illinois State (Feb. 9). Despite the result of the at-bat being a line drive out to third, she definitely made enough of an impression to stay in the lineup for another chance. The Anaheim, Calif. native made her next chance at the plate count as she drilled a three-run opposite field home run to give Florida a 9-0 lead. Matthews went on to record a total of 10 RBI on opening weekend with a.462 batting average. Her natural position is at shortstop but has adjusted to the outfield quite well as she has made several outstanding plays in right field. She ranks fifth on the team in batting average (.318) and ranks second in RBI (34). Scoring In Bunches They say hitting is contagious. That couldn't be more true for the Gators this season. Florida has scored four or more runs in a single inning 24 times in 36 games played. The most runs scored in an inning so far this season has been nine against Cal State Fullerton and Hampton (3/30). DeWitt Makes Move To Third Senior Nicole DeWitt made the move over to third base for the 2018 season, while freshman Hannah Adams takes over duties at second base. DeWitt started all 68 games at second last year. However, the Garden Grove, Calif. native is no stranger to the position as she already had 20 starts at third in 191 games played as a Gator. Prior to this season, her last start on the "hot corner" was 74 games ago against Ole Miss (5/12/16). So far this season she has started every game at third and has since been tabbed by head coach Tim Walton as one of the best third basemen the Gators have ever had. Gators vs. The Top 25 Last season Florida notched a 27-8 record against teams ranked in the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 and 25-8 mark against those ranked in the USA Softball/ESPN.com Top 25. This season the Gators hold a 11-3 record against Top 25 competition with six shutouts. Kelly s K s Last season Kelly Barnhill was five strikeouts away from breaking Stacey Nelson s single record of 363 that was achieved in Look for the Marietta, Ga. native to pick up where she left off and continue to strike out the opposition at a torrid clip. Over the last two seasons, the talented righthanded pitcher set the single season record for strikeouts per seven innings. During her freshman campaign in 2016 she averaged strikeouts per seven innings of play and improved upon that number her sophomore season with an astounding average of Heading into her junior season she currently sits fourth all-time in the career record book with 703 strikeouts. She will have the opportunity to climb up the ranks rather quickly but it might take her until her senior season to reach Nelson s career record of 1,116. Defense, Defense, Defense Defense has been the name of the game for the Gators the past three seasons. Over that span, Florida has posted single season records in fielding percentage and has led the nation in that category for the last two. The Gators have only committed 27 errors each of the past two seasons and ended with flabbergasting averages of.984 (2016) and.985 (2017). Expect Florida to perform at the same high level this season with veteran returners Kayli Kvistad, Nicole DeWitt and Sophia Reynoso accompanied by a highly touted freshman in Hannah Adams. Florida committed an uncharacteristic amount of errors against No. 16 Louisiana and No. 10 Georgia. The Gators had a setback with five errors against the Cajuns and four against Bulldogs. Lorenz Picking Up Where She Left Off Junior Amanda Lorenz is picking up where she left off last season at the plate. The Moorpark, Calif. native has already posted a seven-game and an eight-game hitting streak this season. In back-to-back games this season, Lorenz went 7-for-7 with two doubles, three home runs and 11 RBI and six runs scored. Lorenz has also reached base safely in every game this season. In 2017, she reached base safely in all but two games and has reached 160 times out of 167 games in her career. Patience & Power Senior Kaylie Kvistad crushed the UF singleseason record for walks last year with 67. That s almost double the amount of free bases she drew in 2016 (36) and way past the number etched during her freshman campaign in 2015 (25). The Lake City, Fla. natives patience not only afforded her a record number of free passes last year, but it also forced opposing pitchers to put the ball where Kvistad wanted it. The result was more hits, more specifically extra base hits. The talented hitter more than doubled her doubles as she cranked out 14 in 2017 while only producing six in 2016 and five in This season Kvistad has 29 walks through 36 games and is on pace to have the same type of season. Gators on National TV Late January, ESPN and the SEC Network announced the television schedule for the 2018 season. The Gators, scheduled to appear 14 times during the regular season, recorded a 15-7 record in 2017 across the ESPN family of networks. This year you can find Florida softball seven times on ESPN 2 and seven times on the SEC Network. The Gators are also featured in a pair of Saturday, Sunday & Monday series with the first being when Texas A&M comes to Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium (Mar ) then a trip to face Alabama (Apr. 7-9) on the road. Adams, Lugo & Crew Look To Make Immediate Impact Florida added six freshmen to the roster for 2018 and look to depend on them to make an immediate impact his season. Headlining that class is infielder Hannah Adams and pitcher Natalie Lugo. This past summer both Adams and Lugo helped the USA Junior Women s National Team secure the WBSC Junior Women s World Championship. Adams projects to be an everyday starter for Florida at second base and could be featured as the leadoff batter, while Lugo could see plenty of action in the circle. Also joining the Gators are standouts Haven Sampson, Jordan Matthews, Danielle Romanello and Josie Page. 2

22 Tim Walton has established Florida softball as a national powerhouse as he enters his 13th year at the helm of the Gators squad. In 2017, Florida became only the third SEC program to win three straight SEC Regular Season Championships and now holds a league leading seven titles, six of which have come under Walton s guidance. With an incredible record of (.828) at Florida, the fivetime SEC Coach of the Year has led the Orange and Blue to 361 school records and numerous other SEC records, and his squads have earned various firsts for the Gator softball program. By the end of the 2008 season, the Gators had set the NCAA single-season record for wins (70) and the SEC single-season record (27). In 2017, Walton and his staff earned their fifth NFCA Southeast Coaching Staff of the Year award and the team finished the season leading the nation in ERA (0.81) and fielding percentage (.985) for the second consecutive season. With back-to-back national titles in 2014 and 2015, Walton s Gators are one of only four teams to have achieved the feat in consecutive seasons. Under Walton s tutelage, Gator softball student-athletes have earned 37 NFCA All-American honors, 54 All-SEC honors, two USA Softball Player of the Year recipients, three Honda Award winners, eight SEC Player & Pitcher of the Year honorees and one NFCA Freshman of the Year. The Gators have not only excelled on the field but in the classroom as well under Walton. Since 2006, Florida student-athletes have achieved 16 CoSIDA Academic All-American honors, 108 appearances on the SEC Academic Honor Roll and 45 SEC Academic Honor Roll First-Year recipients. Prior to arriving at Florida, he took Wichita State to the NCAA Tournament in 2005 where his team finished with a school single-season record 46 wins (46-18). After three seasons with the Shockers he amassed a record of Walton has been a part of national championship teams as a baseball player, an assistant softball coach and a head softball coach. Before heading to take his first head coaching position at Wichita State, Walton served as an assistant softball coach for the University of Oklahoma, as the hitting coach and outfielders coach. In his four seasons at OU, the Sooners won three Big 12 titles and made three consecutive WCWS appearances, including winning the 2000 NCAA title. Outside the collegiate ranks, Walton has continuously prepared his student-athletes for success. So far, 14 Gators have went on to play in National Pro Fastpitch league and nine players have been selected to various national teams including the United States, Puerto Rico and Mexico.
