Love Field at Pat Patterson Park. LA Tech has struggled this season with low-scoring games and that continued this past week, as two of the three losses suffered against UAB gave the Bulldogs 12 losses this season that have been decided by three runs or less. FIU enters the weekend with the top-ranked offense and pitching staff among 13 Conference USA teams, while the Panthers are tied for fifth in the league standings with an 8-7 record in C-USA play. The series is set to kick off at 6 p.m. Friday, as all fans are invited to The Love Shack for Free Hot Dog Friday. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free hot dog courtesy of Super 1 Foods. Saturday will be Faith & Family Day at the ball park, while kids will have the opportunity to get post-game autographs from the Bulldogs on Sunday. A LOOK AT THE PANTHERS FIU rolls into Ruston this weekend to face the Bulldogs for the first time since 2001 in what will be the first time the two teams have met as Conference USA opponents, despite facing off as members of the Sun Belt from 1998 to The Panthers enter the weekend with a 24-9 overall record and an 8-7 mark in league play, which ranks fifth in the C-USA standings. Most recently, FIU lost midweek to UL-Monroe by a score of 12-6, while the Panthers lost two of three from Old Dominion in Miami last weekend. ON DECK Seeing as the Bulldogs will wrap up their seven-game home stand this weekend by hosting FIU in league play, LA Tech will pack its bags once again to make the bus trip to face UALR midweek at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 15. Tech will then travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to take on Southern Miss for the first time as a Conference USA opponent. 3 VERSUS NOTES SERIES HISTORY Louisiana Tech is gearing up to take on former Sun Belt and current Conference USA foe FIU for just the 13th time in the history of both programs. The Panthers currently lead the all-time series, 9-3, over LA Tech, but the Bulldogs came out on top the last time these two teams met at the 2001 Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Lafayette. Louisiana Tech played FIU four times that season, winning 10-7 in the regular season and 5-3 in the tournament. Love leads the team in hits (38), doubles (7), runs (19) and on base percentage (.390), and enters this weekend on a 28- game reached base streak, which dates back to Feb. 15 versus Southeastern. Tyler Ervine (.310 BA)leads the team with 16 RBI and is tied for the team lead with three home runs. As a team, LA Tech is hitting.254 this season with 36 doubles, a triple and 13 home runs. FIU comes into the series with a league-leading.300 team batting average with 51 doubles, five triples and 14 home runs. The Panthers are led by Aramis Garcia, who enters the game with 10 doubles, five homers and 29 runs batted in on the season. Garcia leads all C-USA hitters with a.366 batting average. On the mound Junior right-hander Austin Greer (0-0, 2.35 ERA) will get his fifth start of the season as he will take the mound in the series opener Friday in his first appearance in Tech s weekend rotation. The Bulldogs will then send junior left-hander Jared Keating (0-2, 4.86 ERA) to the bump in what will be just his second start of the season, while senior Richie Navari (3-3, 2.03 ERA, 2 CG) is set to get the start in the series finale for the Bulldogs. The Panthers come into the weekend as the top pitching staff in Conference USA with a 1.89 team ERA. Mike Franco (4-2, 1.05 ERA) will start things off Friday, while Cody Crouse (2-2, 1.73 ERA) and Chris Mourelle (6-0, 0.59 ERA) will go in Games 2 and 3 for FIU. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park, also known as The Love Shack. Since it s opening in 1971, Tech has posted a home record, good for a.641 win percentage. The 23 home wins in 2011 were the most under head coach Wade Simoneaux. The Bulldogs 2014 schedule features 29 home games at The Love Shack this season, including a total of eight three-game series against top tier opponents. LOVE S REACHED BASE STREAK CONTINUES TO GROW Ever since Feb. 15 when the Bulldogs hosted and defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 2-1, sophomore shortstop Taylor Love has developed an affinity for the base paths. Although Love did not reach base in the first game against the Lions to open the 2014 campaign, the Shreveport native has reached base safely in every other game he has played in this season. His reached base streak is now up to 28 consecutive Love games and counting with the next closest streak on the team being an six-game reached base streak, which belongs to Ryan Jones. Love is batting a team-leading.345 this season with seven walks and a.390 on base percentage. He has a team-leading seven doubles to go along with two home runs and 12 RBI. EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT! Despite playing just one extra-inning game all of last season, a 14-inning affair which resulted in a loss to UT Arlington, this year s Diamond Dogs have made a habit of going the distance and then some. In 30 games this season, LA Tech has already played five extra-inning contests, three 10-inning games, one 11-inning and a 12-inning affair. The Bulldogs started things off on opening weekend, taking Friday and Sunday s games against SLU to extra innings, falling in the first before bouncing back with a 2-1 win on Sunday. In the first game of a doubleheader vs. Minnesota, the Bulldogs once again produced free baseball, although the Golden Gophers eventually defeated Tech, 4-2, in that game. Another extra-inning affair resulted in a thrilling 6-4 win over McNeese in 11 innings thanks to Kimbell s two-run walk-off home run. Most recently, the Bulldogs won a 12-inning contests over C-USA foe Old Dominion thanks to a walk-off threerun home run by Tyler Qualls. LA Tech is now 3-2 in extra-inning games. BULLDOGS, NAVARI WITH THE WINNING COMBINATION After making eight appearances this season on the mound for the Bulldogs, including seven starts and two complete games, Richie Navari seems to have the winning recipe for the Dogs in Four of Louisiana Tech s wins this season have come when the senior right-hander sees time on the bump. In his first outing of the season, Navari threw five innings of two-hit baseball and did not allow Southeastern to cross home plate in a 2-1 win on Sunday. He seemed to get even stronger in his second start of the campaign, a complete game performance, the first of his career, the next Sunday versus Tulane to clinch the first C-USA win for the Bulldogs in program history. He made his first appearance out of the bullpen against Minnesota, coming on in the fifth and pitching 5.0 innings and tying a career high with seven strikeouts to move to 2-0 on the season. Navari also posted a second complete game at No. 25 Texas A&M on March 9 in College Station, Texas. 4 LATechSports.com

5 TEAM NOTES 2014 C-USA CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNS TO HATTIESBURG The 2014 Conference USA Championship will return to Hattiesburg, Miss. for the fourth time in the league s history. Southern Miss also hosted the 2009, 2005 and 1996 C-USA Championships at Pete Taylor Park. The Championship will feature the top eight teams in regular-season league play and the format returns to two double-elimination brackets, with a single-elimination championship game. Pete Taylor Park/ Hill Denson Field has been the home of Southern Miss baseball since 1984, when the facility was opened. The Pete as it is nicknamed, has seated more than a million fans who have entered its gates. During that time, the Golden Eagles have been regularly among the top teams in the nation in attendance BULLDOGS SOLID DEFENSIVELY In 2013, the Louisiana Tech Diamond Dogs posted the fourth best fielding percentage for the sixth time in school history. With a.962 team fielding percentage, LA Tech s solid defense committed 78 errors, just four more than last year s team, who is third all-time for best fielding percentage by a Bulldog team. Junior first baseman Tyler Ervine led the way with just three errors committed over the course of the season and a.993 fielding mark in his first season at LA Tech. TECH TO BATTLE NCAA REGIONAL CONTENDERS Overall, the Bulldogs will face off against a total of four teams that participated in postseason play in 2013, with Texas A&M, Florida Atlantic and UTSA making appearances in NCAA Regionals last season, while Rice advanced to the Super Regionals before falling short against NC State on the road. To make things tougher, the Bulldogs will have to face off against all four of those teams in three-game series on the road. Twenty-two games into the season, Louisiana Tech is now 2-4 against 2013 NCAA Regional teams. The Bulldogs have yet to face off against Conference USA mates UTSA and Rice. He is also one of seven Conference USA catchers on the 2014 watch list. In 27 games this season, Qualls has already thrown out 10 base runners attempting to steal, which ranks third among all C-USA catchers and is a career-high for the senior. Qualls threw out a total of nine base runners all of last season. He has also picked off two runners in the 24 games he has started for the Bulldogs. At the plate, Qualls is batting.234, while also hitting his first home run of the season March 22 against Old Dominion, a three-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the 12th inning for a 9-6 win. He has also successfully stolen two bases this season. In four years with the Bulldogs, Qualls has thrown out a total of 30 runners attempting to steal to go along with seven pickoffs. 6 TEAM NOTES 2013 PITCHING STAFF BEST SINCE 93 SEASON Over the course of the 2013 season, Simoneaux and the Bulldogs relied on a quality pitching staff that was put in place over the last few years through thorough development. With that, LA Tech pitchers recorded a 4.48 team earned run average in 56 games, making the 2013 season the most successful for any Bulldog staff since the 1993 season when Mike Kane s staff posted a 4.44 ERA. The staff was led by junior Phil Maton and seniors James Ferguson, Trevor Petersen, Caleb Dudley and Jamie Gilley. All five pitchers accounted for 13 of the Bulldogs victories last season. MATON RETURNS, CONTINUES TO BUILD IMPRESSIVE CAREER BULLDOG BASEBALL Head coach Wade Simoneaux Louisiana Tech baseball had three players drafted on the third and final day of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft with Sam Alvis, Ryan Gebhardt and Taylor Terrasas being selected by professional clubs Saturday. Three Bulldog players are the most Simoneaux has had selected in the draft since the 2011 season when Tech sent three players to play professionally from that season s roster. As a sophomore, Maton picked right up where he left off and was named a first team all-western Athletic Conference honoree after a year where he led the league in strikeouts (89) and was second best among WAC pitchers with a 2.70 ERA. Maton was 6-6 on the year and held opposing hitters to a.216 average throughout the campaign. Over the course of the season, the sophomore right hander posted a career-high in strikeouts in a single game (11) and also pitched two complete games for the Bulldogs. His career ERA is now 2.81 in 33 total appearances on the mound. TRIO OF BULLDOGS SELECTED IN 2013 MLB DRAFT Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft over the course of his 12-year tenure at Louisiana Tech. Junior infielder Ryan Gebhardt was drafted as the 14th pick in the 17th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks, while junior left handed pitcher and outfielder Sam Alvis was selected as the sixth pick in the 21st round by the Miami Marlins. Senior infielder Taylor Terrasas wrapped things up for the Bulldogs after being picked 29th in the 30th round by the Cincinnati Reds. All three Bulldogs who were drafted signed profressional contracts to wrap up their careers at Louisiana Tech. 12th season Overall Record Entering his 12th season at the helm of the Louisiana Tech baseball program, Wade Simoneaux has turned the Bulldogs into perhaps one of the more prolific offensive teams in the south. In 12 seasons with the Bulldogs, Simoneaux has compiled over 275 wins and has turned J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park into a true home field advantage as LA Tech has built a.686 winning percentage since Over the course of the 2013 season, Simoneaux and the Bulldogs relied on a quality pitching staff that was put in place over the last few years. With that, LA Tech pitchers recorded a 4.48 team earned run average in 56 games, making the 2013 season the most successful for any Bulldog staff since the 1993 season. Sophomore Phil Maton picked right up where he left off in his freshman campaign a year ago and led the Western Athletic Conference in strikeouts with 89, while posting a 2.70 ERA in 2013, which was second best among all WAC pitchers. Senior pitcher Trevor Petersen also made his mark on the season after moving up to seventh place alltime in the Louisiana Tech record books with 68 career appearances on the mound. Simoneaux has also orchestrated the renovation of J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park. The coaches and players have done almost all of the work as the facility has seen many changes and improvements. A new fence was installed and recently the team renovated its locker room, along with adding a new coat of paint on the stadium. The field is in its best shape in years due to the many hours Simoneaux, his staff and players have put in working on it.
