TU to Play Four Games at Wooo Pig Classic this Weekend After splitting a pair of midweek games, Tulsa will head east to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Wooo Pig Classic. TU will play twice on Friday and Saturday against Omaha, Iowa State and Saint Francis (Pa.). Tulsa is a combined 6-3 all-time against its opponents this weekend. The Hurricane is 4-2 against Iowa State, 1-1 against Saint Francis (Pa.) and 1-0 against Omaha. TU will not face host Arkansas. Going Streaking After starting the season 3-6, Tulsa has won 12 of its last 16 games and is coming off a 6-1 win over Illinois State on Wednesday. During the stretch, Tulsa is hitting.320 while the pitching staff owns a collective 2.52 ERA. The offense has outscored its opponents with the help of 38 extra-base hits. Emily Watson has led the pitching staff with six wins and a 1.59 ERA during the stretch and freshman pitcher Samantha Pochop is 4-0 with a 3.00 ERA. Watson has recorded double-digit strikeouts in four of her eight appearances during the stretch. More Streaks Julia Hollingsworth will enter the weekend on a 16-game hitting streak, which has raised her batting average to a team-leading.440 for the season. Hollingsworth is hitting.481 (26-of-54) with a double, two tripes, a homer and seven RBIs during the streak. Eight of those games have been multi-hit outings and she s had at least two hits in each of her last four games. Shelby Estocado had a 16-game hitting streak snapped against Illinois State on Wednesday. The senior hit.500 (27-of-54) with five doubles, a triple, three homers and 19 RBIs during her streak. Watson Named The American Pitcher of the Week For the 10th time in her career, senior Emily Watson was named American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 26. Watson went 3-0, Feb , at the FAU Strike-Out Cancer Tournament with a pair of shutouts, 30 strikeouts and no runs allowed in 20 innings of work. She started the weekend with six scoreless innings against UIC before a season-high 13 strikeouts against Columbia. Shelby Estocado ranks fifth in program history with 28 homers, including five round-trippers this season. She also ranks eighth with 110 RBIs and 10th with 280 total bases. Julia Hollingsworth currently owns the program-record with a.464 on-base percentage, while her career.372 batting average ranks second. She is tied for sixth with 38 stolen bases and her six triples are tied for eighth. Hollingsworth tied a single-game record with a pair of triples in Tulsa s win over Nicholls State (March 3). Look Who s Back Tulsa returns 13 letterwinners, including six position starters, the designated player and three pitchers, from last year s team which went and won its first American Athletic Conference regular-season title with a 15-3 league mark. The TU offense will bring back all of its home runs, 79.3-percent of its extra-base hits, 76-percent of its runs scored, 74.3-percent of its RBIs and 71.1-percent of its hits from last year s squad. The lineup will see the return of NFCA All-Region picks Julia Hollingsworth (OF) and Haley Meinen (DP), while the pitching staff will see the return of second-team NFCA All-American Emily Watson. It s Elementary, Watson The Golden Hurricane pitching staff is anchored by NFCA All-American Emily Watson. The senior nearly set a program single-season record with 348 strikeouts, while her 14 shutouts set a new program standard and led the nation last season. Watson also set single-season records with 30 wins, 36 starts, 29 complete games and innings pitched. The senior was recently announced as one of 50 players across the nation on the Watch List for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award and she is one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. 3 GOLDEN HURRICANE SOFTBALL HEAD COACH JOHN BARGFELDT In 12 years as the head coach at The University of Tulsa, John Bargfeldt has built TU softball into a nationally competitive program and one of the premier programs in its conference. After leading one of the top programs in Conference USA, Bargfeldt transitioned the Golden Hurricane into the American Athletic Conference, where Tulsa has claimed three league championships ( tournament titles, 2017 regular-season). The program s longest-tenured coach, Bargfeldt has the most wins and highest winning percentage in school history, and has built a program accustomed to winning championships. Under Bargfeldt, the Golden Hurricane has won a conference title in seven of his 12 seasons, totaling 12 league championships. TU earned C-USA regular season titles in 2006, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2014, and C-USA tournament titles in 2006, 2009, 2012 and Since joining The American prior to the 2015 season, the Golden Hurricane has claimed back-to-back tournament crowns in 2016 and 2017 along with the 2017 regular-season title. TU also has reached the NCAA Tournament nine times: 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016 and Bargfeldt has been named conference Coach of the Year three times: 2011, 2012 and 2014, while the entire coaching staff was recognized as the 2017 American Athletic Conference Coaching Staff of the Year. Bargfeldt has led the Hurricane to a winning record in each of his 12 seasons and is the only coach in program history to have more than three. TU has won over 40 games in six of the last nine years on his way to posting a career record of for a.672 winning percentage. In his tenure, Tulsa has produced six All-Americans, 56 all-conference players, 34 first-team selections and 23 NFCA all-region players. In addition, the Golden Hurricane boasts 20 C-USA Academic Medalists, 12 C-USA All-Academic Team members, four CoSIDA Academic All-Americans and six Academic All-District student-athletes. Pitcher Aimee Creger, a three-time All-American, became Tulsa s first student-athlete to represent the United States on the USA Softball Women s National Team. Additionally, four players Jill Barrett, Samantha Cobb, Shelby Estocado and Caitlin Everett all represented the United States on the USA Baseball Women s National Team. In 2014, Barrett was Tulsa s first second-team All-American, and the first player to earn Academic All-American and All-America honors in the same season. The schedule also will have the Hurricane matched-up with teams that started the season either ranked or receiving votes. Texas A&M is 7th in the NFCA Coaches Poll, while TU also will face defending national champion No. 5 Oklahoma (April 17) and No. 25 Oklahoma State (March 21, April 4). Meanwhile, McNeese State (Feb. 9-10), Texas State (Feb. 24) and St. Francis (Pa.) (March 17) also started the season receiving votes. Tulsa Picked to Repeat as American Athletic Conference Champs Tulsa garnered six first-place votes and the squad was picked to repeat as American Athletic Conference champions by the league s coaches. TU earned 48 points in the poll, while Houston picked up a pair of first-place nods and 44 points to rank second. The duo was followed by USF, UCF, Wichita State, Memphis, UConn and ECU. Last season, TU won both the regular-season and tournament titles, sweeping those championships for the first time since 2014 when the Hurricane accomplished the feat in its final season as a member of Conference USA. TU Success Under Coach Bargfeldt Now in his 13th season at Tulsa, head coach John Bargfeldt is the program s longest-tenured head coach and has the most wins and highest winning percentage in school history. Prior to Bargfeldt s arrival, the program had just four winning seasons in 13 years and did not win a conference title or appear in an NCAA Regional. Since his hiring prior to the 2006 season, the Golden Hurricane has had a winning record in all 12 campaigns with six regular-season and six conference tournament titles. In addition, TU has advanced to nine NCAA Regionals, including a spot in the postseason for six of the last seven years.
