Last time out, Roberts suffered the loss against UAB allowing six runs on nine hits in his six innings of work adding a pair of strikeouts with one walk. >Saturday: RHP Ryan Butler (3-7, 3.93) vs. RHP Richie Navari (5-5, 2.11) >Sunday: RHP Brock Hudgens (2-5, 3.48) vs. TBA Weekend Starters Going the Distance Ryan Butler threw Charlotte s first complete game of the season on Saturday, April 5th during a 4-1 victory over Evansville and followed that up with a CG on April 18th vs. Tulane. Butler, throwing his first career complete game vs. Evansville, allowed just one run on six hits with three strikeouts. Against Tulane, Butler gave up a run on four hits with six strikeouts. Not to be out-done, senior Brock Hudgens tossed his complete-game eight days later during Charlotte s 11-1 C-USA win at FAU. Hudgens tossed all seven innings allowing just one run on two hits with six strikeouts. Just four days later, Corey Roberts threw his CG limiting Tulane to just three hits with seven strikeouts on 78 strikes over 129 pitches. T.J. s Slam Freshman second baseman T.J. Nichting belted Charlotte s first grand slam of the season back on Friday, March 14th at Middle Tennessee. Nicthing squared up an 0-1 pitch to hit the Niners first grand slam since Justin Seager did it against Youngstown State on March 3rd of Nichting capped off a six-run eighth with his bomb to right. Our Hands are Tied For the just the sixth time in school-history and first time in nearly eight years, Charlotte played to a tie in the series-finale on March 2nd against Creighton. Due to a travel curfew for Creighton, the Niners and Blue Jays ended the Sunday contest at a 5-5 draw after 10-innings of play. The deadlock happened for just the fourth time in the Loren Hibbs era and just the eighth time in Conference USA history. Two Out Suffering For a multitude of reasons, the Niners have been unsuccessful in successfully closing out an inning on defense. Charlotte has surrendered 97 runs with two outs entering play this week. vs. Charlotte has seen the opponent score a majority of their runs with two outs in 17 contests while The Citadel, VCU, ECU (G2), Evansville (G1) and UTSA have scored all of their runs with two outs. 46% of the total runs (97/216) allowed by the Niners have scored with two outs. Double Digit Hits Charlotte knocked out a new season-high of 17 hits scoring a season-high 12 runs during a 12-4 victory over Wake Forest on April 23rd. That eclipsed the previous high of 16 hits in an 11-1 C-USA win at Florida Atlantic on April 13th. Charlotte has had double-digit hits in 16 games this season and are in those contests. Coming Back to Haunt You Charlotte has committed 61 errors on defense which has turned into 46 unearned runs for the opponents. Both totals are in the top standings of Conference USA. 2 Five NCAA Appearances 2014 Charlotte 49ers Baseball Seven Conference Championships 2014 Game Notes Contact: Sean Fox, Assistant Director of Media Relations Extra! Extra! Charlotte has already needed extra-innings four times through early portions of the 2014 season going in those matchups. The Niners have played 92 sessions of free baseball in school-history going , needing just two more occassions this season to tie a school-record. Six is the season-record occuring three times in 2006, 2008 and The 08 Niners went 5-1 to set that school-record in free baseball. Walk Them Off The Niners picked up their first of two walk-off wins of 2014 against Canisius on February 22nd with Brad Elwood s single in the 12th. The second came in dramatic fashion as Corbin Shive belted a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth against VCU back on March 11th. The Niners trailed 4-3 entering the inning and saw a 10-game winless streak end with Shive s blast. High Point (Feb. 18th) and FAU (Apr. 111th) are the only teams to walk-off on the Niners in Flirtin with a No-No Redshirt junior Ryan Butler took a no-hitter into the sixth inning during Charlotte s home-opener against Canisius back on February 21st. Butler, making his first start in nearly two years due to injury, surrendered his only hit with one out in the sixth. Butler got the win tossing his six frames, allowing the hit with seven strikeouts. Charlotte has not had a no-hitter since Ronnie Honeycutt did it nearly 27 years ago. Honeycutt picked up a no-hitter blanking UNC Asheville at home on April 14th of Going Streakin Brett Lang has Charlotte s longest hitting streak of the year hitting safely in the first 11 games of the season. Adding three to end the 2013 season, Lang put together a 14-gamer that ended in game two vs. #21 FIU. Brad Elwood has the secondlongest streak of the year at eight while T.J. Nichting and Zach Jarrett have put together seven-gamers. Dandy Debut Freshman Third Baseman Zach Jarrett made an impressive collegiate debut in the Niners season-opener at High Point on Tuesday. The Hickory, N.C. native went 4-for-6 with a double, three singles and a RBI in the 4-3, 11-inning loss. Jarrett s four hits were consecutively starting with a one-out double in the first followed by his three singles in the third, fifth and seventh. Zach is the son of NASCAR legend Dale Jarrett and the grandson of Ned. Trophy Case Junior Brad Elwood was named the lone 49er on the 2014 Conference USA Preseason Baseball team. Elwood is Charlotte s returning batting leader (.343), collecting 80 hits last season, tying for second overall in the conference. He was the third-toughest player in the NCAA to strikeout, with just 10 strikeouts in 233 at bats for the season. He was also named All-Tournament last season, the only returning 49er on that squad. Corbin Shive hit his first career home run in the NCAA Regional in Tempe and earned NCAA All-Regional, the eighth person at Charlotte to earn an All-NCAA Regional honor. A Family Affair, Part One (Oh, Brother...) Charlotte redshirt junior catcher Pat Raley will be joined by his younger brother Danny this season, giving Charlotte its seventh set of brothers to play for the program. The Raleys are the fourth pair of brothers to play on the same team, which includes two pairs of identical twins. In addition to Jason and Kevin Hill playing for Charlotte together in 1998, a third Hill brother,travis, joined the 49ers in 2002, while Jason was an assistant coach with the team at that time. A Family Affair Part Two (Like Father, Like Son) Starting in 1979, Charlotte baseball is now old enough to have legacy players, including the second in program history to don Niner Green this season. The first legacy player to hit the field for Charlotte was Zack Dunn, who played for the 49ers from His father, Mark, was on Charlotte s second team and played from The elder Dunn was a three-time letterwinner for the 49ers, collecting 73 hits and driving in 47 runs at Charlotte from Both father and son got a hit in their first collegiate game, both at home, nearly 29 years apart to the day. Mark s hit came on March 7, 1980 against Wake Forest, with Zack getting a hit on March 9, 2009 versus Furman. This season, freshman Brandon Vogler starts his 49ers career. His father, Mark, led the first-ever team in batting average, hits, RBI and home runs. He was the first player in school history named to an All-Conference team, earning All-Sun Belt Conference in Both the elder Vogler and the elder Dunn were teammates on the 1980 and 1981 teams.

Now in his 22nd season, head coach Loren Hibbs continues to extend his mark as the all-time winningest coach in the program s history. The 2009 season opener was his 900th career game as the Niner skipper. He won number 600 in the first game of the road series at Massachusetts April 29, He is signed through the 2018 season. Averaging better than 31 wins per season over his 20-plus years as head coach at Charlotte, Loren Hibbs enters 2014 ranked 44th in the NCAA for wins among active coaches. With 40 or more wins in four of the past seven seasons, 35 wins in six of the last eight seasons and 30 or more wins in eight of the past nine, Charlotte has risen to new heights under his direction. The 49ers have claimed victory against a team ranked No. 7 or higher in four-straight seasons ( ). The Niners have either been in the Top 25 or have received votes in seven of the past eight seasons, reaching a program-high rank of No. 18 in Hibbs has been named Coach of the Year in all three conference affiliations (Metro, 94; Conference USA, 98; and Atlantic 10, 07) in a Charlotte uniform. In 2013, junior Justin Seager was named the program s fourth Player of the Year after leading the league in doubles, third in batting average and on-base percentage, second in runs scored, fourth in hits and tying for seventh in RBI. Charlotte tied the school record with 29 home wins on its way to its seventh league title (the fifth in a seven-year span). 4 2014 C-USA BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP - Pete Taylor Park - Hattiesburg, Miss. C-USA Championship Format The 2014 Conference USA Championship will return to Hattiesburg, Miss. for the fourth time in the league s history. Southern Miss also hosted the 2009, 2005 and 1996 C-USA Championships at Pete Taylor Park. The Championship will feature the top eight teams in regular-season league play and the format returns to two double-elimination brackets, with a single-elimination championship game.
