Mainieri is one of only eight NCAA Division I active coaches with at least 1,200 career victories... he earned National Coach of the Year recognition in 2008, 2009 and Mainieri directed LSU to the 2009 College World Series title, and he also led the Tigers to CWS appearances in 2008, 2013 and under Mainieri, the Tigers have won five SEC Tournament titles (2008, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014), five SEC Western Division titles (2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2015) and the 2009, 2012 and 2015 SEC regular-season championships. NOTES ON THE TIGERS LSU is ranked in the Top 10 in the college baseball polls released Monday, and the Tigers highest ranking is No. 5 in the Perfect Game poll. The Tigers posted a three-game sweep over Cincinnati last weekend to open the 2016 season, and LSU dropped a decision at Lamar on Wednesday. Junior left-hander Jared Poche will start Friday s game on the mound for the Tigers. Poche worked 6.2 inning last Friday in the season opener against Cincinnati, allowing three runs on four hits in three walks and five strikeouts. LSU s starting pitcher on Saturday, sophomore right-hander Alex Lange, was named on Monday the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week by the league office. Lange, a product of Lee s Summit, Mo., improved his LSU career record to 13-0 as he defeated Cincinnati on Saturday in his 2016 season debut. Lange worked 6.2 shutout innings, allowing just one hit with three walks and nine strikeouts in the Tigers 4-0 win. Senior left-hander John Valek III, a transfer from the University of Akron, will be the Tigers starter on Sunday against Sacramento State. Valek III defeated Cincinnati last Sunday in his LSU debut, limiting the Bearcats to four runs on four hits in 5.2 innings with no walks and seven strikeouts. LSU is hitting.257 as a team after producing 11 runs on 12 hits in Wednesday night s game at Lamar. The Tigers have launched six homers in their first four games while stealing nine bases in 14 attempts. LSU blasted five home runs in last weekend s series versus Cincinnati, including four in Sunday s 12-4 victory. The four-homer output last Sunday marked the first time the Tigers launched four dingers in a game since May 13, 2014, when LSU belted five home runs against Northwestern State, a 27-0 LSU victory in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.
