LSU junior designated hitter Blake Dean batted.417 (5-for-12) in the Florida series (May 8-10) with one double, one homer and four RBI to help lead the Tigers to the series victory. After surrendering a single to start the second inning, Coleman retired 19 straight Razorback hitters before Arkansas recorded its second hit with one out in the eighth inning. Coleman was named SEC Pitcher of the Week for his complete-game, 5-0 victory. Junior second baseman Ryan Schimpf enjoyed an outstanding series for the Tigers vs. Alabama (April 10-12), batting.571 (8-for-14) in three games with two homers, four RBI, five runs and one stolen base. LSU LISTED AMONG NATION'S "MOST DESIRABLE" PROGRAMS LSU, a five-time NCAA champion and the nation's leader in attendance for 13 straight seasons, is listed among the Top 10 "Most Desirable" college baseball programs by Rivals.com. The web site selected 10 programs that are outstanding in the categories of resources, facilities and tradition. In addition, LSU coach Paul Mainieri is rated No. 1 in the Rivals.com "Power Rankings" of college head coaches. Mainieri was named the Rivals.com 2008 National Coach of the Year last summer after guiding LSU to the SEC Western Division title, the SEC Tournament championship and a berth in the College World Series. Following are notes on the LSU program by Kendall Rogers, college baseball editor for Rivals.com: LSU In six years of covering college baseball, there's not been a better place than LSU to cover an important series. From the numerous tailgates outside the stadium to the party inside the stadium, LSU fans make their games events to remember. That, among other things, is what makes LSU such an attractive place to be from both a coaching and recruiting standpoint. LSU also has a wealth of history. The Tigers have captured five national titles with the latest in Though old Alex Box Stadium was a great old-school ballpark, LSU is about to receive a huge boost when its new ballpark is finished in early spring. Perhaps most important to coaches, the Tigers aren't afraid to open the checkbook to hire premier coaches. LSU Coach Paul Mainieri 2008 National Coach of the Year (Rivals.com, CollegeBaseballInsider.com) Career Record (27 seasons) LSU Record (three seasons) LSU Baseball under Mainieri in 2008 College World Series Participant SEC Tournament Champion SEC Western Division Champion SEC-Record 23-Game Win Streak Mainieri directed LSU last season to a record and the Tigers' first CWS berth since LSU, which was predicted to finish fifth in the SEC Western Division in the preseason league coaches' poll, won 26 of its final 29 games during a remarkable late-season surge. With four weeks remaining in the regular season, LSU was overall and in 11th place in the overall SEC standings with a record; however, the Tigers posted a conference-record 23-game win streak that saw LSU claim the SEC Western Division title, the SEC Tournament championship and the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional championship. LSU's 23-game surge ended with a loss to UC Irvine in Game 1 of the NCAA Baton Rouge Super Regional, but the Tigers won the next two games over the Anteaters to advance to the College World Series for the 14th time in school history and for the first time since LSU placed fifth in Omaha with a 1-2 record, marking the Tigers' first Top 5 CWS finish since the 2000 squad claimed the national title. Mainieri's emphasis on academic achievement produced outstanding results in the classroom. Fourteen LSU baseball players - the most in the program's history - were named to the 2008 Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. The previous high for the LSU squad was 12 players, established in 2004 and in The 2008 team's cumulative GPA for the spring semester was 2.89, the highest figure in LSU Baseball history, and the cumulative GPA for the entire academic year was 2.83, also the highest ever recorded by the baseball program. In addition, the Tigers logged 345 hours of community service work, the most by any of the LSU men's sports programs during the academic year. Mainieri has established an active community service function within the baseball program, as the Tigers regularly visit hospitals and schools in the Baton Rouge area. The team also participates in the ALS Walk -- promoting awareness of the treatment of Lou Gehrig's Disease -- and in the Buddy Walk, which is designed to encourage acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome.
