2 Church Relations 8 [ ] R1 BREWTON-PARKER COLLEGE ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT SIX-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN THROUGH RESULTS & RESPONSES OBJECTIVE 1 The Athletic Department will assist the College in its efforts to improve enrollment by aggressively recruiting new student athletes and retaining present student athletes. ACTION PLAN 1 Conducting a feasibility study about adding additional intercollegiate sports: RESULTS Tennis Golf Cross Country Data secured by the athletic department indicated that additional sports programs were not the answer to improving enrollment at Brewton-Parker College. The cost was excessive for the number of athletes that could be recruited. Further data was provided by questionnaires sent out to recruits. The results were excellent in response to questionnaires mailed and the number of varsity and junior varsity players signed, thus enhancing enrollment of Brewton-Parker. With the new Student Activities Center hosting volleyball and basketball games an increased attendance of approximately 100 per event was experienced. Better athletes were attracted by the new facility resulting in winning records in volleyball of 31 and 12, men s basketball 20 and 13, and women s basketball 24 and 9. Increased winning generates excitement and therefore, student body participation is better. RESPONSE A determination was made not to expand to different sports at this time. However, we did learn that the new Student Activities Center was not only instrumental in attracting new students, who would participate in athletic events there, but also those who would be involved in the recreation involved in the building. With an improved athletic program and systematic effort to market events to other students the athletic department will enhance student body participation in extra curricular events.

3 Church Relations 8 [ ] R2 We have seen basically what we expected to see with the opening of the Student Activities Center. In the coming year, we hope to enhance attendance further through regular advertising, activities at the game to attract attention such as half court shots for prizes, etc. and booster club activity. We contacted four different schools with similar enrollment and cost. At this time because of budget constraints, we will not add any new sports. However, every March we will address the study to see if we could possibly start these sports the following fall semester. We will also address the possibility of adding these sports one at a time instead of all at once.

ACTION PLAN 1 Conducting a feasibility study about adding additional intercollegiate sports: Tennis Golf Cross Country RESULTS We conducted another feasibility study this year by contacting several of the Athletic Directors in the Georgia Alabama Carolina Conference. The four schools listed below are close to Brewton-Parker College in cost except for North Georgia College. We included North Georgia College so we could get a state school prospective. Shorter College has decided to start football in the fall of Shorter College expects to have 100 football players next year. At this time because of budget constraints, we will not add any new sports. All of the athletic directors that were contacted think that each sport is relatively inexpensive to implement. Still, costs of implementing new sports programs including coaches' salaries, benefits, travel and equipment represent a significant increase in athletic budget. We will review this again next March.

ACTION 1 Conducting a feasibility study about adding additional intercollegiate sports: Tennis Golf Cross Country RESULTS To retain student athletes, coaches have made a determined effort to give opportunity to play and compete to each athlete. This is indicated by the attachment in the Athletic Department report indicating number of minutes played. RESPONSES For retention, the athletes must be academically successful and study hall is required for each team. The College s tutoring service also works with Keeper Action Teams. Athletes are kept on track for graduation with one of the staff working as a liaison working between students and advisors. Feasibility Study on Additional Sports We conducted another feasibility study this year by contacting several of the Athletic Directors in the Southern States Athletics Conference. However, we are working with the webmaster to upgrade our web page where potential recruits can fill out a particular sport questionnaire online. This will enable us to expand our recruiting base nationwide as well as worldwide. We will continue the questionnaires with upgrades. The monthly recruiting report has enabled each coach to be more efficient in recruiting. This has been especially effective for younger coaches that have minimal recruiting experience. The monthly recruiting report also informs the Athletic Director of the recruiting efforts of his coaches. We will continue the monthly recruiting report.

The monthly recruiting report also informs the Athletic Director of the recruiting efforts of his coaches. 3. We will continue the monthly recruiting report. 4. Four out of seven sports have added a questionnaire to their web page. This tool has added a new dimension to our recruiting process. When the questionnaire is returned it shows the student has a direct interest in Brewton- Parker College.

16 Church Relations 9 [ ] R5 BREWTON-PARKER COLLEGE ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT SIX-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN THROUGH RESULTS & RESPONSES OBJECTIVE 1 The Athletic Department will assist the College in its efforts to improve enrollment by aggressively recruiting new student athletes and retaining present student athletes. ACTION PLAN 2 Recruitment of new student athletes Statewide high school and junior college communication flow. Personal recruiting by each coach. RESULT The effort to market the Student Activities Center to students was supported greatly this year by the Student Affairs office by hosting students for numerous events in the Center. Enrollment at BPC has been enhanced by surrounding school systems making use of our facility for athletic events, graduation, and social events. Students being so exposed to the Center and our athletic programs here are much more likely to enroll. Retention is increased by the excellence of the facility attracting more students to be involved in the game room, the workout area and intramural events hosted there. The questionnaires submitted by the coaches had a major affect on recruiting athletes this year. One hundred twenty-four athletes were personally recruited by the coaches. 21 Church Relations 10 [ ] R3 BREWTON-PARKER COLLEGE ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT SIX-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN THROUGH RESULTS & RESPONSES OBJECTIVE The Athletic Department will assist the College in its efforts to improve enrollment by aggressively recruiting new student athletes and retaining present student athletes. ACTION PLAN 3 Retaining present students The opportunity to play and compete. The use of the College s tutoring services. The College s program of student services. RESULTS Each coach's statistical program keeps up with minutes played and or games played for each student athlete. See attachment 1. Each coach is responsible for his team's academic success. Study hall is required for each team. Each coach sets up his own hour requirements for each week. The College's tutoring service as well as the early warning system, set up by the Keeper Action Team, keeps each coach updated on each player's academic progress. Fall of 2002, we implemented a student athlete liaison as a go between student athletes and advisors. This position keeps each athlete on track for graduation. This position also keeps faculty updated on NAIA eligibility requirements. Student athlete satisfaction survey results. See attachment 2 RESPONSE The statistical results for each sport prove to be a great source of information for our coaches and student athletes. These stat programs are updated after each game and are always web accessible. We will continue to share this information with our athletes on their progress. The study hall that each sport conducts has been very beneficial in individual and team grade point averages. The learning lab has also been beneficial to keep athletes on track for eligibility reasons as well as keeping them on track for earning a degree. Our athletic liaison position has been a great addition. This position has closed the gap between athletes and their advisors. This position enables any athlete to have access to transcripts, guide sheets and eligibility questions and concerns. We will

22 Church Relations 10 [ ] R4 continue all of these procedures as we have found them to be very beneficial for retention of our athletes. However, I feel there is another issue that is causing a retention problem. Playing Time/Economics We bring in a large number of junior varsity athletes every year giving them all a chance to one-day play on the varsity level. It is my opinion that the junior varsity numbers are so high that it causes a retention problem. In the AY, each of Brewton-Parker College s athletic coaches will collect data related to the student athletes who leave the College prior to graduation. This data will be gathered to more fully understand the low retention rate of Brewton-Parker College s Junior Varsity athletes..
