The Sooners open the event against Northwestern on Friday night at 6 p.m. On Saturday, OU faces Drake (1 p.m.) and GCU (6 p.m.). Finally, the Sooners close out the weekend with a rematch against Northwestern on Sunday at 1 p.m. There will also be five neutral-site games at the tournament between Northwestern, Drake, GCU and Tulsa. Each game will be televised via SoonerSports TV powered by FOX Sports. Both games against Northwestern will air on Fox Sports Oklahoma, while the matchup with Drake will be on Fox Sports Oklahoma Plus. Saturday s game against GCU will be streamed through SoonerSports.tv for premium subscribers. All games can also be heard on the air through KEBC 1560 AM in Norman or online through the Franchise 2. March 8-10 Led by depth in the pitching staff and a pair of homers, Oklahoma took down McNeese 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Marita Hynes Field. Junior Shannon Saile improved to 3-1 on the season with the win in the circle. She allowed just one hit while striking out nine. Classmates Nicole Mendes, Mariah Lopez and Parker Conrad all threw one inning in relief. Freshman Grace Green led Oklahoma s offensive effort, finishing the day 3-for-3 with a run scored, two RBIs and a home run. Senior Sydney Romero went 2-for-2 at the plate, scoring a run and driving in one. The longest is 45 games, held from April 14, 2000 to March 29, OU last lost at home on April 23, The Sooners opened their home campaign with a pair of ranked wins at the Courtyard Marriott Tournament on March 1. OU shut out the Beavers 3-0 before run-ruling the Ragin Cajuns 9-1 in five innings. On Tuesday, Oklahoma edged McNeese 6-1 in an afternoon matchup. On Thursday, the OU Athletics Ticket Office announced that tickets are sold out for the remainder of the 2019 home season. In 2018, the Sooners went 30-0 at Marita Hynes Field, including a 25-0 mark in the regular season. It marked the second perfect home record in school annals, also occurring in 2001 (18-0). Additionally, 30 home wins were the second-most in OU history behind the 2014 team s 32. LAST TIME THEY MET... In the all-time series, the Sooners have never lost to Drake (6-0) or GCU (4-0) and hold a commanding advantage over Northwestern, Fifteen of the 16 meetings between OU and Northwestern have taken place at neutral sites, with the series opening in Norman in 1978 (Oklahoma won 9-0). The Sooners have won the last four matchups, most recently claiming an 11-9 victory in Palm Springs, Calif., in The Sooners have hosted Drake in Norman five times, claiming a pair of wins in 2013 by run rule: 10-2 in six innings and 13-0 in five. Saturday s matchup against GCU will be the first time the Lopes travel to Norman. Oklahoma opened its 2019 campaign at the GCU Kickoff Tournament, facing the hosts once and earning a 7-1 victory. A CLASS OF THEIR OWN The 2019 season marks the final season for six OU seniors: Falepolima Aviu, Caleigh Clifton, Shay Knighten, Kylie Lundberg, Raegan Rogers and Sydney Romero. Since this group stepped on campus, no team in the country has a better win percentage than the OU seniors, and only Florida and Florida State (which have played six and seven more games, respectively) have as many wins. Once a student-athlete ( ) and graduate assistant ( ) for the Sooners, the former Jennifer Jaime returns to Oklahoma after most recently spending 13 years at Florida. During Rocha s tenure, the Gators won two NCAA titles (2014, 2015) and made nine Women s College World Series appearances (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018). Additionally, Florida claimed seven SEC regular season titles (2008, 2009, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018) and four SEC Tournament tiles (2008, 2009, 2013, 2018) with Rocha on staff. Leading the Gators pitching staff, Rocha has coached seven All- Americans. In 2015, she was named NFCA Assistant Coach of the Year. Another new coach familiar to the Sooner program is Keilani Ricketts, who returned to Oklahoma to serve as the volunteer assistant in Ricketts is one of just three players in college softball history to be named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year more than once, joining the ranks of Cat Osterman and Danielle Lawrie. Ricketts became the first Sooner to win the award in 2012 and then repeated in The first four-time All-American in program history, Ricketts was named the 2013 Big 12 Female Athlete of the Year as she helped lead Oklahoma to its second national title. Selected as the No. 4 pick in the 2013 NPF Draft, Ricketts has spent the past six seasons with USSSA Pride, most recently leading the Pride to the 2018 Cowles Cup. Additionally, Ricketts joined the Toyota Shokki out of Kariya, Japan, in August Ricketts is also a member of the USA Softball Women s National Team. Also joining the OU staff are Kelsey Arnold and Lea Wodach, who will serve as undergraduate assistants for 2019 as they complete their degrees. The duo exhausted athletic eligibility in 2018, finishing their playing careers with two NCAA titles, four Big 12 regular season crowns, two Big 12 postseason trophies and three WCWS appearances. Finally, a pair of graduate assistants round out the OU coaching staff s new additions: DJ Gasso and Delanie Gourley. Gasso concluded his collegiate baseball career in 2018 at the University of Central Oklahoma, while Gourley graduated from Florida in 2017 after earning All-America First-Team, All-Southeast Region First-Team and All-SEC First-Team honors in both her junior and senior seasons. The junior struck out 14 batters over 6.0 shutout innings against BYU, good for the most strikeouts by a Big 12 pitcher this season and her first double-digit strikeout performance as a Sooner. Juarez followed that showing with 11 strikeouts against No. 14 Arizona. In her third appearance, Juarez struck out all four batters she faced over 1.1 innings of work. Juarez allowed one run all weekend, coming against the 14th-ranked Wildcats to finish with a 0.49 ERA. She scattered four hits over 14.1 innings to total a.087 opponent batting average that ranked third in the Big 12 and first among pitchers with multiple appearances. This marks the second time in her collegiate career that Juarez has been recognized by the NFCA with a weekly award; she also earned the accolade in March 2018 as a sophomore at Arizona State. It is her third overall national weekly honor, as she was named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week last season. The Glendale, Ariz., product is just the third Sooner in program history to be named NFCA Pitcher of the Week, joining Jill Most (1997) and Paige Parker (2015 and 2018).... AND NATIONAL RANKS After Tuesday s midweek game, the Sooners rank in the top 10 nationally in seven categories: third in strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.92), fourth in slugging percentage (.621) and home runs per game (1.61), seventh in batting average (.355), eighth in on-base percentage (.446) and 10th in ERA (1.45) and win-loss percentage (.889). Individually, four Sooners rank in the top 25 nationally in seven categories. Junior Shannon Saile is second in the country in strikeouts per seven innings (12.4) while holding 10th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (9.00) and 18th in hits allowed per seven innings (3.59). Classmate Mariah Lopez sits in seventh nationally in hits allowed per seven innings (2.93), eighth in strikeouts per seven innings (10.7), 12th in shutouts (three) and 23rd in ERA (0.86). Fellow junior pitcher Giselle Juarez is 13th with an 8.33 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Offensively, senior Sydney Romero s six home runs ranks 21st nationally while her 47 total bases rank 25th. RUN IN POLLS CONTINUES After earning two ranked wins last weekend, OU moved to No. 3 in both the USA Today/ NFCA Division I Coaches Poll and the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25. Oklahoma is the only program to be ranked every week of the NFCA poll, a run of 357 straight polls. Oklahoma entered the 2019 season ranked fourth in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Preseason Coaches Poll and the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Preseason Top 25. OU s No. 4 spot in the NFCA Poll marks the ninth straight year the Sooners have started in the NFCA s top 10, good for the nation s longest active streak. OU has been ranked in the top five in six of the past seven years, which is tied with Florida for the most over that stretch. Oklahoma, Michigan, UCLA and Washington are the only programs to be ranked in every NFCA preseason poll, which dates back to THREE NAMED TO PLAYER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST Senior infielder Sydney Romero, junior left-handed pitcher Giselle Juarez and sophomore utility player Jocelyn Alo are among the 50 student-athletes on the 2019 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List. All three Sooners were named NFCA First Team All-Americans in Three selections tie for third nationally with Arizona and Washington having four representatives and Florida and UCLA also having three. The top 25 finalists for the 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be announced April 24. While an athlete does not have to be on the Watch List to be considered for the top 25, the eventual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will come from the top 25. The top 10 will be announced May 8 and the top three announced May 22. The 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be revealed May 28. Oklahoma alumna and current volunteer assistant coach Keilani Ricketts was a two-time recipient of the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, considered the most prestigious honor in NCAA Division I Softball. Mariah Lopez opened the season by winning back-to-back Big 12 Pitcher of the Week Awards. On Feb. 26, OU swept the weekly awards as Sydney Romero was named Big 12 Player of the Week and Giselle Juarez was tabbed Big 12 Pitcher of the Week. Overall, Romero has earned five Big 12 weekly accolades in her career while Lopez has claimed three. Juarez s honor in February was the first of her career; she also earned f our Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honors while at Arizona State in THERE S NO K IN SYDNEY ROMERO Since the start of the 2016 season, Sydney Romero has played in 210 of Oklahoma s 212 games, starting 209 of those contests. In that span, Romero has made 690 at-bats and struck out 22 total times. In 2018, Romero s strikeout rate of AB/K (195 AB, 7 K) ranked 19th nationally and third among student-athletes in Power Five conferences. Additionally, it is 11th among players returning in All three of Romero s completed seasons rank in Oklahoma s top 10 season records for toughest to strikeout. In 2016, Romero averaged AB/K (211 AB, 4 K) to rank third in program history. Last year s average is eighth-best in OU annals, and her 2017 average of AB/K (236 AB, 9 K) ranks 10th. THAT LL LEAVE A MARK... ON THE RECORD BOOKS Senior captain and Oklahoma native Caleigh Clifton set a program record on Feb. 16 for the number of times hit by a pitch. The first pitch of the game against Hofstra hit her in the leg for her 55th career HBP. ROAD WARRIORS The Sooners will be road tested in 2019 with 38 of their 53 games being held on the road or at neutral sites. Oklahoma will play just 15 games at Marita Hynes Field in OU has played fewer regular season home games just three other times in the Patty Gasso era: nine in 1997, 12 in 1996 and six in Additionally, 15 home games ties for the third lowest in the country among major conference teams this season. Only Oregon State and Iowa have fewer, each scheduled to host 12 home games in Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue, Rutgers and Wisconsin are also set to play 15 games at home this year, making Oklahoma and Oregon State the only non-big 10, Power-Five schools competing at home 15 times or fewer this spring. The Sooners are playing a road-heavy schedule due to Big 12 scheduling. In 2018, the Sooners series against Iowa State was moved to Norman due to snow in Ames, Iowa. As a result, Oklahoma will travel to Ames in both 2019 and 2020 and will host just four conference games (Baylor series and one Bedlam contest) in Norman this year. QUICK HITS OU alumna Michelle Gascoigne is an assistant coach at Northwestern. A teammate of OU volunteer assistant Keilani Ricketts, Gascoigne played at OU from and earned All-Region and All-Big 12 honors during her senior year. Speaking of former Sooners... a pair of Oklahoma alumnae were named to the 2019 USA Softball Women s National Team: Shelby Pendley ( ) and Keilani Ricketts ( ). They were joined at National Team Selection Trials by former Sooners Lauren Chamberlain ( ) and Paige Lowary ( ), current graduate assistant Delanie Gourley (Florida, ) and current sophomore Jocelyn Alo. 9 2019 OKLAHOMA SOFTBALL HOME TOURNAMENT MARCH Now in her 25th season at the University of Oklahoma, NFCA Hall of Fame head coach Patty Gasso has molded the OU softball program into a national power and permanently placed herself among the elite college softball coaches in the country. Oklahoma has won four national championships, winning in 2000, 2013, 2016 and OU is one of just three programs in NCAA history to win more than two national titles. She s reached the Women s College World Series 12 times during her tenure, and in the process, advanced to the postseason in each of her 24 seasons. With 28 seasons as a head coach to her name, Gasso has a career collegiate coaching record of 1, (.779) and holds an overall record of 1, (.786) at the University of Oklahoma. Needing only 1,300 games to get there, Gasso became the second fastest to reach 1,000 wins in NCAA Division I history during the 2015 season. She has won more Big 12 games (325-85) than any coach in the league s history and has twice as many wins as any other coach in OU history. Gasso s Sooner teams have finished second or higher 19 different times since the inception of the Big 12 in They have won over 78 percent of their Big 12 contests, and OU has claimed 11 Big 12 regular season and six championship titles under her direction.
