Georgia Tech will be looking to snap a six-game losing streak when they enter the weekend. Cameron Stanford leads the team with a.337 batting average for the year and a.458 clip in conference play. Emily Anderson paces GT in the circle with a 13-9 record and 2.15 ERA overall, while her 4-2 record and 2.98 ERA in ACC play also lead the way. GT is also one of the top home run squads in the ACC, standing tied for second with 36 overall. Its 1.03 HR/Game average is third in the ACC, 22nd in the NCAA. LATE LEADS = MAJOR KEY... One of the biggest deciding factors in a Duke victory has been where it stands on the scoreboard after the fifth and sixth innings. The Blue Devils are 14-1 when holding the lead after five innings of play and are a perfect 16-0 when leading after six. On the flip side, Duke is 1-14 when entering the sixth inning trailing and 0-12 when going into the seventh down. GEORGIA TECH APRIL 6-8 TEAM NOTES ST. GEORGE ROLLING THROUGH ACC PLAY... Freshman Peyton St. George has been nearly unstoppable in ACC play so far this year. The Mechanicsville, Va., native is a perfect 4-0 in 25.1 innings pitched and has a 1.38 ERA that is fourth-best in the league. Her.178 opposing batting average in conference play stands fourth and she is one of three pitchers to have four wins and record a save in conference play. MORE RUNS THE MERRIER... A majority of the Blue Devils success in 2018 has been factored on number of runs scored and how many runs their pitching staff allows. When Duke scores three or more runs in a contest, they are 16-7 as opposed to a 3-11 record when going below that mark. Its opponents have found its success in doing the same, as Duke is 7-17 when allowing three or more runs, but going 12-1 when holding its foes to two or less. NEW PROGRAM? NO PROBLEM... Logic would state that a new athletics program will need time to build and grow before the winning comes. Well, that may be the case for most, but don t tell that to Marissa Young and her squad... The Blue Devils are so far this year, marking one of the best first years by an ACC softball program. Of the 12 current softball schools in the conference, Duke s 19 first-year wins rank tied for sixth with Virginia s first season (1980). Florida State holds the ACC record for most win in an inaugural season with 46 in MAKING IT RAINE... Ever since blasting a pair of home runs in the second game of the series at North Carolina, sophomore Raine Wilson has been on a tear at the plate. She has hit safely in 18 of her last 22 contests and is 27-for-64 (.422) in that stretch with 13 RBI, 13 runs, six doubles, three home runs and a triple, along with a.688 slugging clip and.493 OBP. On the year, Wilson ranks top five in the ACC with a.479 OBP (2nd) and.382 batting average (5th). SPREADING THE SCORING LOVE... After finding a majority of its offensive firepower in the early innings to start the season, Duke has now spread out its run scoring evenly across the board. The Blue Devils have 135 total runs scored so far this season, with 60 (44%) of those coming in the first three frames, while 61 (45%) have come from the fourth to the sixth innings. Duke s 26 first inning runs are the most of any frame so far this season. DOUBLE THE FUN... Duke has tallied 54 doubles so far this season, which is good for second in the ACC. The Blue Devils 1.46 doubles per game average is third in the ACC and 52nd nationally. Jameson Kavel and Raine Wilson lead the Blue Devils with nine doubles each, a total that stands tied for fourth amongst conference players. A total of 13 Blue Devils have recorded a double so far this season, with 10 having tallied multiple. PITCHING SUCCESS... Perhaps the strongest point of Duke s game through its first year of competition is its pitching unit. With a 2.18 ERA, the Blue Devils staff stands second overall in the ACC in team pitching and enters the week ranked 36th in the nation. The staff also sports a 2.14 strikeout-to-walk ratio, good for fifth in the ACC, 78th nationally. Amelia Wiercioch tops the team with a 1.80 ERA, placing her second in the league and 46th nationally. Peyton St. George is leads the team in K s with 67 and is third in the conference with just 19 earned runs allowed. Katherine Huey paces the team in the win column with seven victories. Huey busted onto the scene in her first weekend in the collegiate game, tallying the program s first win (Feb. 8 at FAU-1) and first complete game shutout (Feb. 9 vs. Michigan State) before earning espnw s National Player of the Week honors after the second weekend of play. MAKING SACRIFICES... Sometimes to be great, you ve got to make some sacrifices. And for Rachel Abboud and Jazmine Moreno, they ve been doing just that, excelling on the sacrifice fly/sac bunt front. Overall, the Blue Devils have tallied 33 sacrifice hits and scored eight runs on sacrifice flies. Abboud is tied for first in the ACC and 10th nationally with four sac flies, while Moreno s 0.24 sac hits per game are second in the ACC and 38th in the NCAA. Moreno s nine sac bunts are also tied for first in the conference. GAME NOTES 5

6 KAVEL LEADING (OFF) THE WAY... Jameson Kavel has been the catalyst for the Blue Devil offense throughout year one, leading the team in seven different offensive categories. Kavel is 22-for-51 (.431) in reaching base when leading off an inning. In her 34 contests as the Blue Devils leadoff hitter, she is 36-for- 120 (.300) with 25 runs, 13 RBI, eight doubles, five triples and a home run, which she earned in Duke s 5-0 win against Morgan State (Feb. 23). OH HOW SWEEP IT IS... The first home ACC series in program history was one that will go down in the record books for the Blue Devils, as they earned their first conference win, series victory and series sweep against the Boston College Eagles March Duke won in walkoff fashion Friday night on a BC passed ball with Jazmine Moreno on third, came back from down three on Saturday to secure the series W and broke a scoreless tie with a run in the sixth to sweep the series on Sunday. ST. GEORGE SHINES AGAINST BC... After a rough stretch to start off the month of March, freshman Peyton St. George came back with a vengeance against the Eagles, showing out in the circle and at the plate. St. George went 3-0, all relief appearances, not allowing a single run, only eight hits and striking out five through 8.2 innings of work. At the plate, St. George went 3-for-6 with a double and a.667 slugging percentage. DUKE PICKS UP FIRST MIDWEEK VICTORY... After only facing non-conference opponents in tournament play for the first four weekends of the season, the Blue Devils finally were able to play in a midweek contest, heading to Charleston for a March 14 doubleheader. Duke took the first contest, 5-1, before falling in a heartbreaking 9-8 walkoff loss in game two. WILSON SHOWCASES HER AT UNC... Despite the losses during their opening weekend of ACC play, the Blue Devils did have several bright spots, led by the dominant performance at the plate in game one on Saturday from Raine Wilson. The redshirt sophomore went 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs and the first two home runs of her career, also becoming the first player in program history to record a multi-homer contest. WIERCIOCH BLASTS DUKE S FIRST GRAND SLAM... To say Amelia Wiercioch had a good weekend at the Duke Inaugural Tournament is a bit of an understatement. Wiercioch picked up a win and a save while posting an impressive 0.54 ERA in four games, while picking up a team-high six RBI. However, the biggest highlight came against Lehigh (March 3), as she blasted a shot to centerfield with the bases juiced for the program s first grand slam in history. ST. GEORGE SETS PROGRAM STRIKEOUT MARK... Duke s first game of their weekend in Orlando was highlighted by the dominant performance in the circle from Peyton St. George. The freshman righty threw her first complete game shutout, retired the first 13 batters and held Morgan State hitless through the first 5.2 innings. To top it off, St. George fanned 12 batters throughout the contest, which currently stands as the most in a single game in program history. HUEY HONORED BY ESPNW... After a weekend that saw her go 2-0 in the circle, strike out 10 batters, record the program s first home run and tally eight RBI, freshman Katherine Huey caught the eye of the national media. For her efforts, she was named espnw s National Player of the Week Feb. 21, making her the first player in program history to receive a weekly honor of any kind. HUEY SHINES IN HER FIRST TIME UP... Duke s home opener against Penn State also marked the first time freshman pitcher Katherine Huey would earn an at-bat and she did not disappoint. After fouling out in her first appearance, Huey finished the night going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one run scored and the program s first home run. She would wrap up the weekend leading Duke with a 7-for-12 showing at the plate with eight runs batted in, three runs scored, two homers and a double. WIERCIOCH SHUTS DOWN PURDUE... After earning the program s first save in the night s first game against Penn State on Feb. 16, Amelia Wiercioch returned in the next game for the best pitching performance so far through Duke s inaugural season. Even more impressive is her advocacy, energy and passion for student-athletes. Unequivocally, we believe she is the right coach to build an amazing softball program from the ground up here at Duke. We are ecstatic she is joining the Duke family. First and foremost I want to thank God for blessing me with this opportunity, Young said. I am honored by Dr. White s belief in me and entrusting me to start the softball program at Duke. Starting a program is a once in a lifetime opportunity, but to do it at one of the nation s most prestigious schools academically and athletically is a dream come true. Success is not a single event but a process. After meeting with Dr. White, I was confident in his visionary leadership and commitment to the process of making Duke Softball successful. The excitement on campus and within the athletic department about the start of our program has been astounding. I look forward to building this program from the ground up and to carry on the successful tradition of Duke athletics both on and off the field.
