IN PURSUIT OF 100 Fourth-year head coach Marla Looper has a career coaching record of (.498). She is just three wins from achieving her 100th win as a head coach. Seniors Brianna Luna, Kayla Massey and Michelle Zoeller and Looper's coaching staff of Adrianna Baggetta, Stacy May-Johnson and Chelsey Carmody have been a part of each one of her career wins. Iowa recorded 27 wins in 2011, 27 wins in 2012, and added 30 wins in The team s 30 wins last season was the highest win total since 2009 when the Hawkeyes posted a mark. APRIL POWERS The Hawkeye offense has averaged one home run per game in their last nine contests of the season. UI hit two in game two of its double header win over then-ranked No. 13 Missouri, a season-high four home runs in the annual Iowa Corn Cy- Hawk Series game at Iowa State, a solo home run which proved to be the game-winning hit in the series-opening game at Indiana and two more in game three of the Indiana series. Nine of the team s 20 home runs hit this season have been knocked out of the park in the last 11 days. NATIONALLY SPEAKING As a team, Iowa ranks 15th nationally in double plays per game (0.48) and 60th in triples per game (0.21). Looper led the Hawkeyes to 30 wins in 2013 (30-24) in her third year, marking the most wins for the program since finishing in Iowa posted six wins over ranked opponents. Three Hawkeyes earned All-Big Ten honors -- Megan Blank was named to the first team, Johnnie Dowling earned second team honors, and Kayla Massey was named to the Big Ten All-Defensive team at pitcher. Blank earned her second-straight first team accolade, becoming the sixth Hawkeye in program history to earn first team honors in each of her first two seasons. Blank was also named a 2013 NFCA First Team All-Midwest Region selection, earning her second all-region honor in as many seasons. Blank became the sixth Hawkeye in program history to garner all-region honors in each of her first two seasons. In the classroom, a school-record 10 Hawkeyes were named to the 2013 spring Academic All-Big Ten team. During her second season with the Hawkeyes, Looper led the team to a runner-up finish in the Big Ten -- the program's highest finish since winning the league title in Iowa dropped two of its first three conference series before winning five straight to close out the season. It was the first time the team had won five straight series since the 2004 season. Iowa entered the final weekend with a conference title within reach, but it couldn't close the gap with Michigan despite taking 2-of-3 games at Minnesota. The Hawkeyes finished with a overall and 16-8 conference record in Five players garnered All-Big Ten recognition, including three first team selections. Senior Liz Watkins, sophomore Kayla Massey and freshman Megan Blank earned first team accolades, sophomore Michelle Zoeller was a second team honoree and junior Johnnie Dowling was a third team selection. Blank also garnered NFCA second team all-region honors during her freshman campaign. She is the ninth Hawkeye to earn first team All-Big Ten and all-region honors during her freshman season. The Hawkeyes finished second in the Big Ten in pitching (2.31 ERA) and third in fielding (.967). The squad turned 26 double plays during the course of the season to rank sixth nationally in double plays per game (.49). Looper guided the Hawkeyes to a overall and a 9-11 Big Ten record in her first season in Iowa City. The first year head coach led the UI to a pair of six game winning streaks in her opening campaign and a tournament title at the Stetson Classic. Iowa opened Big Ten Conference play strong, jumping out to an 8-3 record. Among the victories was a 4-2 triumph at No. 1 Michigan. The win, which pushed the overall mark to 26-16, was Iowa's first over a No. 1 ranked opponent since the 2005 season and the first over a ranked foe since Looper's Hawkeyes were on the verge of completing a series sweep in Ann Arbor before the Wolverines rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim the victory and halt Iowa's momentum. A pair of Hawkeyes earned All-Big Ten recognition at the conclusion of the season. Liz Watkins was tabbed as a second team selection, while Katie Keim earned third team accolades. Looper took over the reigns of the Iowa program after serving as an assistant coach at the University of Texas for 11 seasons ( ). Looper helped lead the Longhorns to three College World Series appearances (2003, 2005 and 2006) and nine NCAA Tournament berths. 3 CAREER CLIMB Senior Kayla Massey and junior Megan Blank continue to climb their way up Iowa s career ranks. Massey is currently fifth in complete games (85), seventh in innings pitched (712.2), eighth in games pitched (128), ninth in wins (53) and strikeouts (431) and 14th in home runs (15). Blank ranks eighth in doubles (40), 10th in triples (10) and RBIs (109) and 12th in home runs (16). SERIES HISTORY: WESTERN ILLINOIS Iowa leads Western Illinois in the all-time series, The Hawkeyes have won the last 14 meetings over the Leathernecks. The last time the teams played, Iowa topped Western Illinois, 12-4 in six innings, at the Bama Bash tournament hosted by Alabama on Feb. 24, The Leathernecks last defeated the Hawkeyes on April 18, 2000 by a score of 1-0. SERIES HISTORY: NORTHERN IOWA Iowa leads Northern Iowa, 28-16, in the all-time series. A FAMILIAR FACE Western Illinois head coach Holly Van Vlymen began her coaching career at the University of Iowa. She was on staff as the pitching coach from during which the Hawkeyes posted a overall record, won two Big Ten titles and advanced to the 2001 College World Series. A LOOK AT THE PANTHERS Missouri Valley Conference member Northern Iowa enters Wednesday s game with a overall record. The team is led by seventh-year head coach Ryan Jacobs, and he is assisted by Julie Gerdes and Matt Egger. The roster is made up of six freshmen, seven sophomores, two juniors and three seniors. POWER SURGE The Hawkeye offense knocked a season-high four home runs out of the park in their annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series game at Iowa State in just five innings of action. The game, which ended in an unconventional 6-6 tie, was stopped due to excessive rain, resumed and ultimately called early due to darkness. Kayla Massey started it off with a two-run home run to left in the top of the second inning, and Whitney Repole opened the top of the third with a solo shot to right center in with a full count for the team s second home run of the game. Iowa added two more in the top of the fourth when Brianna Luna and Megan Blank launched a solo shot and a two-run home run, respectively. The Hawkeyes topped Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Penn State once; defeated Northwestern twice; and swept Purdue. Minnesota and Michigan took three games from Iowa, while Illinois, Penn State and Nebraska posted two wins over the Hawkeyes. Ohio State bounced Iowa from the Big Ten Tournament in game one, 8-4. A WEDNESDAY TO REMEMBER The Hawkeyes topped No. 13/15 Missouri twice in front of their home crowd at Pearl Field on Wednesday, April 16. Iowa used a three-run second inning to pull ahead of the Tigers, 3-1, and were able to hold Missouri scoreless in the remainder of the game to collect its second win over a ranked team this season. Kayla Massey recorded the complete game win in the circle. She held the Tiger offense to four hits and one run. Brianna Luna drove in two runs, while Whitney Repole plated one. Iowa battled back-and-forth with Missouri in game two and came out on top with a 13-9 final victory. The Hawkeyes used season-highs in runs scored (13), RBIs (13), home runs (2) and doubles (6) to earn the sweep and their third win over a ranked program of the season. Kaitlyn Mullarkey was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and her first career home run. She drove in the first runs of her career, collecting four RBIs. Whitney Repole went 2-for-3 with a home run and a double. She drove in three runs. Eight of nine Hawkeye starters recorded a hit in the win. Micaela Whitney recorded the win in the circle. She threw the final 2.1 innings in relief and limited the Tigers to one hit and one earned run. WALK OFF WINNER With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Hawkeyes scored on a walk off wild pitch to secure a 4-3 win over No. 23 Northwestern. Brianna Luna led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to right center. After a Northwestern pitching change, Luna moved to third on a Fritsch sacrifice bunt. The Wildcats elected to intentionally walk Megan Blank to get to Kayla Massey who was hit by a pitch in her at bat to load the bases. With Holly Hoffman at the plate and one out on the board, a Bond wild pitch got by the catcher, allowing Luna to slide in, score the game-winning run and give the Hawkeyes their 10th win of the season and first victory over a ranked opponent. Massey earned her sixth complete game win in the circle and struck out six Wildcats. Four Hawkeyes recorded a hit in the ball game including Luna (1-for-3), Fritsch (1-for-3), Erickson (1-for-3) and Navarro (1-for-2). Fritsch drove in two runs, while Navarro plated one. TOP TIER Hawkeye junior Megan Blank appeared in the Top 50 Watch List for the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year released on Jan. 29, The shortstop -- who made the list for the first time in her career is oneof-seven student-athletes from the Big Ten and one-of-20 juniors included in the Top 50. The list was narrowed to the Top 25 on April 9, but Blank did not make the cut. The Top 10 will be released on May 7 and the Top 3 on May 21. The 2014 Softball College Player of the Year will be announced prior to the start of the Women s College World Series on May 27. The award, given by the National Governing Body for softball in the United States, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. SHOWING UP AT HOME Senior Brianna Luna, freshman Claire Fritsch and junior Megan Blank led the Hawkeyes with strong offensive performances in their home opener against Drake. Luna matched her career-high with three hits (3-for-4). Fritsch posted a career-high three hits (3-for-4) and matched career-highs with two runs scored, one double, one RBI and one stolen base. Blank drove in a team high two runs with a single through the right side. She was 1-for-2 in the contest with a walk. #TEAMPAT To show support for Hawkeye men s basketball head coach Fran McCaffery s son, Patrick, and to raise awareness the University of Iowa softball team is wearing a decal on its helmets. Patrick, a 14-year-old, was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The decal features the thyroid cancer ribbon and says, TEAM PAT'. COLLEGE SPORTS MADNESS RUNDOWN College Sports Madness recognized Iowa softball on several occasions in the preseason. The Hawkeyes were named the No. 40 team in the country by the site on Jan. 9. College Sports Madness also recognized shortstop Megan Blank as a preseason first team All-Big Ten and preseason second team All-American in February.

5 MASSEY NAMED BIG TEN PITCHER OF THE WEEK Senior Kayla Massey earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time in her career on March 31 after throwing two complete game wins at Wisconsin last weekend. In game one, Massey limited the Badgers to one run and struck out six. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run and an RBI to help her cause. The Foothill Ranch, Calif., native matched her season-high with seven strikeouts in game three of the series and held the Wisconsin offense to one run. Massey went 1-for-4 at the plate in the contest. On the weekend, Massey posted a 2-0 record, 1.00 earned run average and 13 strikeouts. She limited Wisconsin, a team that averages 4.1 runs per game, to one run in each of her games pitched. Massey also compiled a.364 batting average,.636 slugging percentage and.417 on-base percentage at the plate for the Hawkeyes. TAKING ON THE BEST Nine of Iowa s 26 losses have come at the hands of ranked foes: No. 14/18 Missouri on Feb. 14 (2-1 in eight innings), No. 14/16 Baylor on Feb. 15 (2-0), No. 23/RV Northwestern on April 5 (6-4 and 4-1), No. 14 Minnesota on April 8 (2-0 and 7-0) and No. 19/22 Nebraska on April (5-2, 9-1 in six innings and 18-0 in five innings). UI recorded its first win over a ranked opponent on April 6 against No. 23/RV Northwestern, 4-3, in walk off fashion, and added a pair of wins over No. 13/15-ranked Missouri, 3-1 and 13-9, on April 16. Each of Iowa's wins over ranked opponents have come at Pearl Field in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes have also been defeated by teams receiving votes in at least one of the national polls on six occasions this year: Lipscomb on Feb. 14 (10-0 in five innings), UAB on Feb. 15 (6-1 in nine innings), and Mississippi State on Feb. 21 (2-0), Feb. 22 (5-0), and Feb. 23 (9-1 in five innings). ZOELLER DELIVERS AT TEXAS Senior third baseman Michelle Zoeller fueled Iowa s 6-5 comeback win over the Longhorns on Sunday, March 16. She went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Zoeller started the second inning with her first triple of the season and the fourth of her career. She slid in safely at home on a squeeze play to give the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead. In the top of the seventh inning, trailing Texas 5-2, and faced with a bases loaded situation, Zoeller hit the first grand slam of her career to give Iowa a 6-5 advantage. The slam proved to be the game-winner as the Iowa defense held Texas scoreless in the bottom of the inning to solidify its 6-5 victory. FRITSCH SHINES IN HOME STATE Hawkeye infielder Claire Fritsch was named to the Getterman Classic all-tournament team after leading all hitters with a.538 batting average (7-of-13). Of her seven total hits, two were doubles -- the first of her Iowa career. She also added an RBI, stolen base, sacrifice bunt and a run scored. The freshman grew up in Round Rock, Texas, just an hour and a half from Waco, and her parents were in the stands to see her excel on the field in an Iowa uniform. A STELLAR DEBUT Redshirt freshman Shayla Starkenburg made a successful Hawkeye debut at the Carolina Classic. The right-handed pitcher collected the first start, win, shutout, and one-hitter of her Hawkeye career in Iowa s first game of 2014 against UNC Greensboro on Feb. 7. Her no-hit bid held until midway through the sixth, when UNCG recorded a single. She recorded five strikeouts in her seven innings pitched. Starkenburg made her second appearance of the season in relief against Presbyterian. She entered the contest in a bases loaded situation with two outs and an Iowa lead to protect. With the game on the line, Starkenburg ended the threat, forcing a ground out to end the game in Iowa s favor 6-3 and record her first career save. Starkenburg made her third and final appearance against Ohio in relief. She held the Bobcats hitless and scoreless. On the weekend, Starkenburg posted 1-0 record, 0.00 ERA, and five strikeouts. She gave up just one hit. A NEW BATTING LEADER Megan Blank hit.437 in 2013, setting Iowa s single season batting average record. The previous record was.428, set by Kim Davis in Her career average is.413, also marking the highest in program history. Blank s 59 RBIs in 2013 mark the second-highest single-season total in program history. 6 HAWKEYE TRADITION Iowa has made four Women's College World Series appearances (1995, 1996, 1997, 2001) and played in 16 NCAA Tournaments in school history. The 16 appearances are the second most in Big Ten history, and the four WCWS appearances equal the second most in conference history. The Hawkeyes have won four Big Ten Conference regular season championships (1989, 1997, 2000, 2003) and two Big Ten Tournament titles (2001, 2003). The Cy-Hawk Series is in its 10th season in , being sponsored for the second time by Iowa Corn. The Cyclones currently lead Iowa in the series, The teams wrapped the series with a softball showdown on April 23 in Ames, which ended in a 6-6 tie after five innings due to darkness. Academic points have yet to be awarded for each team. Iowa has won the in-state competition five times, and Iowa State has won four, in a series that began in Iowa captured the inaugural Cy-Hawk Series (13-8) in and won again in (13-8), (21-4) and (15-11). Iowa State won the competition in (13-8), (18-9), (16-11), (17-11) and (17-11). The 12-event series awards two points (except football, which is worth three) to the winning school in each head-to-head match-up between the two institutions. Additionally, one point is awarded to an institution if the graduation rate of its student-athletes is greater than the national average as reported each fall by the NCAA. A commemorative Cy-Hawk Series Cup, which stands 31 inches tall and weighs 19 pounds, is displayed on the winning team s campus for an entire year after a victory. All events are worth two points, except football, which is worth three points: BLANK INVITED TO 2013 USA NATIONAL TEAM SELECTION CAMP Shortstop Megan Blank was invited to the 2013 USA Softball Women s National Team Selection Camp, held in Oklahoma City on June at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex following her sophomore season. Blank was one of 32 athletes, and one of six sophomores, invited. BLANK HONORED BY NFCA Shortstop Megan Blank was named a 2013 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) First Team All-Midwest Region selection, earning her second all-region honor in as many seasons. Blank is the sixth Hawkeye in program history to garner all-region honors in each of her first two seasons. She became the ninth player in program history to earn all-region recognition as a freshman, as she was named to the second team. MAY-JOHNSON SHINES FOR TEAM USA UI assistant coach Stacy May-Johnson was selected as the 2011 USA Softball Female Athlete of the Year. She earned the honor after helping Team USA to gold medals at the World Cup of Softball VII and the Pan American Games. May-Johnson batted a team best.418 with team highs in home runs (six), runs (26) and RBI (36). In 2012, May-Johnson helped the USA Softball Team to the gold medal at the 2012 World Cup of Softball presented by Lumber Liquidators. May-Johnson started 5-of-6 games for Team USA, posting a.357 (5-of-14) batting average with three runs, two RBIs and two walks. Her best game came in a 9-0 victory over Canada, where she went 2-for-2 with a run scored. The Americans posted a perfect 6-0 record during the competition, and they outscored their opponents, 41-3, in the five day event. CARMODY BACK AT IOWA Former Hawkeye Chelsey Carmody is back with the Iowa softball program, serving as volunteer assistant coach. Carmody started 208 career games in the Iowa infield. A career.335 hitter, she was a team co-captain and was the recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award as a senior. She batted.320 or higher during each of her four seasons in the Black and Gold, totaling 234 career hits, 11 home runs, 87 RBI and 42 stolen bases. Carmody played for UI head coach Marla Looper in 2011 as a senior.
