NATIONAL RANKING (USA TODAY)...7 QUICK HITS ABOUT THE GATORS The Gators just finished the best regular season in school history with a school record 44 wins. The 2016 team was the fastest to reach 40 wins in program history (just 48 games). Since Kevin O'Sullivan took over the Florida program in 2008, he has led the Gators to more Southeastern Conference wins than any other program in that span (171). Junior right-hander Logan Shore became the second pitcher in school history to be named SEC Pitcher of the Year (Justin Hoyman, 2004) after finishing the season 10-0 with a 2.33 ERA. Shore was also named All-SEC First Team for the second time (2014 as a freshman). Junior righty Shaun Anderson was named All-SEC First Team after becoming a shutdown option out of the pen for the Gators. He had the third-most appearances in the league (28) and posted a 0.96 ERA with 10 saves, second best in the conference. Mike Rivera (2nd selection), Peter Alonso and Dalton Guthrie were named to the All-SEC Second Team while Deacon Liput and Jonathan India were named to the Freshman All-SEC Team. Five All-SEC selections is the most since UF had five in Three Gators were named to the SEC All-Defensive Team: Mike Rivera (threw out 12 of 22 runners on the basepaths); Dalton Guthrie (149 assists and just five errors, has not had an error for 24 games); Buddy Reed (2nd selection, zero errors) Florida's winning formula has been great pitching and defense. The Gators finished second in the conference with a 3.00 team ERA and led the league in strikeouts (557), fewest walks allowed (134) and fielding percentage (.985). Entering the week, the Gators led the nation in strikeouts (557), strikeouts per nine innings (10.1) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.16). Three Florida pitchers rank in the top 25 nationally in strikeout to walk ratio: junior RHP Dane Dunning is 13th (6.90), sophomore RHP Alex Faedo ranks 15th (6.80) and junior RHP Logan Shore is 25th (5.85). They also rank in the conference in strikeout-to-walk ratio. Junior LHP A.J. Puk and Faedo are among the best in the country at fanning batters, ranking fourth and 12th respectively. Puk leads the SEC with strikeouts per nine innings and Faedo is second with strikeouts per nine. 3 2016 FLORIDA BASEBALL // WEEK 15 SEC TOURNAMENT RECORD BREAKING SEASON Florida finished the regular season with 44 wins and set multiple records along the way. With a 9-3 win at Tennessee on May 8, the 2016 Gators became the fastest team in school history to reach 40 wins -- doing so in only 48 games. The previous best came in That year, the team reached 40 wins in 52 games. They finished the season with a record and reached the College World Series. With a 4-2 win over Vanderbilt on May 13, Florida won its 42nd game of the season -- setting a new school record for wins in the regular season (UF won 41 games 5 times: 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, 2011). The record for overall wins in a season was set in 2011, when the team finished and reached the CWS Finals. FACING THE IRON Florida has a 12-6 record against ranked teams and is 10-6 against top-10 squads. It also included five games away from home, three on the road and two at neutral sites. STRONG AGAINST SUNSHINE STATE RIVALS With a win over USF, the Gators boosted their record to 17-1 against in-state competition this year. The Hurricanes, Seminoles and Owls were all ranked when UF faced them. In-State Opponents in 2016 vs. Florida Gulf Coast (3-0) at. No. 6 Miami (2-1) home/away vs. UCF (2-0) home/away vs. North Florida (2-0) home/away/neutral vs. No. 11/8/6 Florida State (3-0) vs. No. 19 Florida Atlantic (1-0) vs. Jacksonville (2-0) vs. Bethune-Cookman (1-0) vs. USF STREAKING ALONG Florida set a school record with 29 straight home wins before falling to Mississippi State on April 9. Florida s last home loss had been to Auburn on May 14, 2015, 4-1. DEFENDING HOME TURF Florida finished the regular season 29-4 at McKethan Stadium in front of Gator fans. The most victories at McKethan Stadium occurred in 1998, when the squad was 35-5 (.875). The team s most wins under Kevin O Sullivan in a campaign on its own turf is 34, as Florida went 34-7 (.829) in FAST STARTERS Florida has out-scored opponents by a margin in the first inning this season, is 22-2 when scoring in the opening frame and 30-5 when scoring first. KIDDIE CORPS PROVIDING IMPACT Welcoming the nation s top recruiting class according to Collegiate Baseball, head coach Kevin O Sullivan is routinely starting three freshmen each game - third baseman Jonathan India, second baseman Deacon Liput and left fielder Nelson Maldonado. Freshman right-hander Brady Singer is also among the freshman standouts. Singer has appeared in 21 games and notched 38 strikeouts in 37.2 innings. Fellow freshman righty Jackson Kowar was having a nice season (3-0, 34.2 IP, 13 ER, 44 K, 10 BB) before a non-baseball related medical issue sidelined him in late April. He could be cleared to play in the postseason. Sophomore outfielder/left-handed pitcher Nick Horvath, a junior college transfer from nearby Sante Fe, is also among the newcomers contributing this season. FLASHING THE LEATHER The Gators were the best fielding team in the country in 2016, with a.985 clip - committing just 32 errors in 55 contests. UF was tops in the country last year with a school-record.984 clip. The Orange and Blue is 25-7 playing error-free this year. In SEC play, UF committed 17 errors in 29 games. ARSENAL OF ARMS Through 55 games, Florida s starting pitchers are 30-5 with a 2.85 ERA, 336 K s in innings and a.217 average against. UF s bullpen is 14-6 with 16 saves and has a 3.21 ERA, with 221 K in IP and a.246 opponent batting average. PITCHING STAFF S FAVORITE LETTER...K Florida leads the country with 544 strikeouts in innings and has reached double-digit K totals 32 times in 52 games. In comparison, the pitching corps had 20 games with 10 or more punchouts in 70 games last year. UF is No. 1 in strikeouts per 9 innings (10.4). Florida also ranks first in the nation in strikeout to walk ratio, notching 4.42 strikeouts per walk heading into this week. Conversely, the staff has allowed just 123 walks. In 30 games this season, the Gators have allowed two or less walks -- including eight games with no walks. MILESTONE FOR O SULLIVAN Florida s 5-0 win over Miami on Feb. 26 was the 350th victory for Kevin O Sullivan, becoming the quickest Gator baseball coach to reach that plateau. O Sullivan hit the mark in his 523rd game. LEADER OF THE PACK Since Kevin O'Sullivan took over the Gators program prior to the 2008 season, he has led Florida to more league wins over the past nine seasons that any other school in the league. SEC Wins School W L T Winning Pct FLORIDA LSU Vanderbilt South Carolina Ole Miss Arkansas Alabama Kentucky Mississippi State Auburn Georgia Tennessee Texas A&M Missouri GATORS TAKE TWO FROM COMMODORES Florida took the series against No. 7 Vanderbilt in Gainesville May with wins on Friday and Sunday. Logan Shore kicked things off with a complete game performance allowing two runs on six hits in a 4-2 win. Dalton Guthrie and Deacon Liput led the offense over the weekend. Guthrie hit.333 (4-for-12) and Liput had three hits and four RBI. Nelson Maldonado had three RBI on the weekend. SPLIT IN COLUMBIA The matchup between No. 1 Florida and No. 5 South Carolina had plenty of drama in games one and two, but washed away in a rainout of game three. The Gators used a pair of solo home runs in the top of the ninth inning from freshman Jonathan India and sophomore Nick Horvath to stun the home crowd in a 5-4 UF victory. On Saturday, the Gamecocks evened the series with a 2-1 win despite a strong starting effort from UF junior A.J. Puk (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R/ ER, 10 K). Game three was rained out on Sunday. TAKING BACK THE TOP After losing a series at Kentucky, the Gators dropped from the top of the rankings, but after a win over No. 8 FSU and a sweep of new No. 1 Texas A&M, it didn't take long for Florida to reclaim their place at the top. Peter Alonso hit.667 (8-for-12) with five RBI against the Aggies and freshman Jonathan India hit.556 (5-for-9) with five RBI as the offense exploded for 24 runs in three games. BATTLING THE HURRICANES In week two of the season, Florida headed south for a big non-conference matchup with No. 6 Miami. Logan Shore (complete game shutout) and Alex Faedo (12 strikeouts, 0 R in 6.1 IP) shined on the mound for the Gators. At the plate, veterans Peter Alonso and JJ Schwarz each had five hits in the series and combined for eight RBI. SWEEPING THE SEMINOLES The Gators swept in-state rival Florida State in a trio of midweek games throughout the season. JJ Schwarz hit.462 (6-for-13) against the Noles and totaled four RBI in the three games. Peter Alonso and Dalton Guthrie each had four hits and two RBI against FSU over the three games. On the mound, freshman Jackson Kowar started two of the contests and pitches 11.0 innings and allowed just two runs. Kowar, Dane Dunning and Frank Rubio picked up the wins against FSU. He has two complete-game shutouts on the season -- at Miami and vs. Georgia. Shore's last appearance was cut short by rain, as play was halted in the third inning. He did not return when play resumed two days later and finished with a line of 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB. LEAVING HIS MARK Logan Shore notched victories in his last five starts of 2015 and has claimed his first 10 decisions of the 2016 campaign -- setting a new school record for consecutive wins with 15. He broke the mark set by Russ Kibler with a win against Georgia. Kibler, who won 12-straight during the 1984 season, was in attendance when Shore broke his record. A SHORE THING The Gators went an entire year between losses when Logan Shore took the mound -- and the last loss was marred due to weather. UF had a streak of 18 straight wins in games with Shore on the mound end against LSU. Shore started the game on May 19 and pitched 2.1 innings before play was halted due to weather. When play resumed on May 21, Shore did not return and the Gators went on to lose the contest 7-3. Previously, the last time that UF lost a game that the Coon Rapids, Minn., native started was the series opener against Auburn on May 14, 2015 (4-1). SHORE RECOGNIZED BY THE SEC TWICE Logan Shore had a record-breaking night in his start against Georgia and had a complete game shutout at Miami and was rewarded with SEC honors following both performances. Shore s Highlights vs. Georgia Threw a two-hit, complete-game shutout as the Gators evened their series with Georgia on Friday night, 6-0 Established a Florida school record by claiming his 13th straight win, breaking a mark by Russ Kibler that had stood since Faced the minimum of 27 batters and did not allow any Bulldog runners past first base Retired the side in order in six different innings and benefitted from inning-ending double plays in both the fifth and eighth innings Tossed the second solo shutout of his career, previously at No. 6 Miami (FL) on Feb. 26, and delivered the fourth complete game of his career Shore s Highlights vs. Miami Tossed his first career shutout as the Gators claimed the series opener at No. 6 Miami, 5-0 It marked only the eighth time in the 246-game series between the Sunshine State rivals that Florida had blanked Miami, fourth time in Coral Gables and the first time on the road since Feb. 13, 2004 Matched his career high with eight strikeouts and surrendered four hits without issuing any walks Faced two batters over the minimum in going the distance for the third time at Florida Retired the side in order five different times, highlighted by three strikeouts in the fifth, and finished the contest on 95 pitches A.J. PUK Junior left hander A.J. Puk (2-3, 2.93) has 83 strikeouts in 58.1 innings pitched, while limiting opponents to a.184 batting average. He only lasted two innings in his last outing at LSU after being forced to exit with a stomach illness. Puk finished the regular season second in the SEC with a.184 opponent batting average against and 12th in ERA (2.93). ALEX FAEDO Sophomore Alex Faedo (11-1, 3.58) leads the Orange and Blue with 102 strikeouts in 78.0 innings. His 11 wins were the most in the SEC during the regular season and his 102 strikeouts ranked third. Over his last five starts, all wins, Faedo has totaled 37 strikeouts in 30.1 innings pitched. FAEDO EARNED WEEKLY ACCOLADES Faedo was chosen as the SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 14 for the first time in his career after notching career highs in innings pitched (8.1) and strikeouts (13) in a 3-1 victory over Harvard on Saturday. In addition, Faedo was recognized as one of Louisville Slugger s National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball. Faedo s Highlights vs. Harvard Retired the first 19 Harvard hitters of the series finale on Saturday night until yielding a one-out single in the seventh inning Totaled career highs in innings pitched (8.1) and strikeouts (13) in improving to 4-0 on the campaign Gave up two hits and an unearned run It marked the second time this season that Faedo had carried a no-hitter deep into a game (also at No. 6 Miami on Feb. 28) SHAUN ANDERSON - All-SEC First Team Junior Shaun Anderson (3-0, 0.96) ranks fourth in the SEC with 10 saves on the season. He ranks third in the league with 28 appearances. In 37.2 innings pitched, he has totaled 51 strikeouts with just six walks. DANE DUNNING Junior Dane Dunning (4-2, 2.98) entered the season as the Gators No. 4 starter and made four midweek starts. During the season he transitioned into a weekend relief role and has developed into one of the league's best. He allowed the fewest runs (19) among qualifying pitchers and walked just 10 batters, fourth best in the SEC. In 57.1 innings, Dunning has 69 strikeouts and 10 walks, to go along with two saves. KIRBY SNEAD Junior Kirby Snead (3-1, 2.12) has developed into an excellent situational lefty out of the bullpen. He had a league high 34 appearances on the season. FLORIDAGATORS.COM
