Cheek batted.727 with eight hits, six RBI and five runs scored as UK went 4-0 on the week, including two wins over No. 8 LSU. Caylan Arnold of Tennessee was named the Pitcher of the Week. Arnold recorded two wins and two saves at the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic with 21 strikeouts in 15.2 innings pitched and held her opponents to a.098 batting average. Grace Baalman of Kentucky was named the Freshman of the Week. Baalman posted two complete-game wins for the Wildcats, including her first SEC win in the series opener against No. 8 LSU. 1
2 Media Services Softball Weekly Honors The SEC will announce a Player of the Week, Pitcher of the Week and Freshman of the Week each Monday beginning Feb. 12. Weekly honors will shift to Tuesdays once conference plays begin. Nominations for the awards are made by the softball SID contacts and are selected by a vote of the SEC Communications staff. SEC Tournament The 2018 SEC Softball Tournament will be held May 9-12 at the Mizzou Softball Stadium in Columbia, Mo., hosted by the University of Missouri. The tournament will be a 12-team, single-elimination format, beginning on Wednesday and concluding with the championship game on Saturday. The 12 tournament teams shall be determined based on the highest percentage of wins during regular-season Conference competition. The winner of the tournament receives the league s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. 4 SEC Softball Player of the Week Abbey Cheek Kentucky Junior 3B Inman, S.C. Cheek hit.727 on the week with five runs scored and six RBI over Kentucky s four wins. She had three multi-hit games, including three in a row against three different teams to start the week. Cheek also stole a base in three of four games, her third, fourth and fifth stolen bases of the season. She had three extrabase hits this week, including her team-leading eighth home run of the season against No. 8 LSU in Saturday s series opener. At the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic, Arnold recorded two wins and two saves as the Lady Vols went 6-0 in the tournament and improved to 30-1 overall. She struck out 21 batters over 15.2 innings of work, was a part of three shutouts, and held her opponents to a.098 batting average for the week. SEC Softball Freshman of the Week Grace Baalman Kentucky RHP Hardin, Ill. Baalman posted two wins in the circle for the Wildcats this past week. She threw a mid-week game in which UK won, 15-1, against Indiana. Baalman went the distance, allowing just two runs for her eighth win of the season. She then won her first SEC game by throwing a complete game against No. 8 LSU in Kentucky s 4-1 win over the Tigers in the first game of the sweep. Baalman did not walk a single batter against LSU on Saturday. 5 USA Softball Player of the Year Watch List Eleven SEC student-athletes are among the 50 Watch List athletes for the 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, which is considered the most prestigious honor in Division I women s collegiate softball, recognizes the outstanding athletic achievement by Division I female players across the country. The Top 25 Finalists for the 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be announced April 25. While an athlete does not have to be on the Watch List to be considered for the Top 25, the eventual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will come from the Top 25 Finalists. The Top 10 Finalists will be announced May 9, and the Top 3 announced May 23. The 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be revealed May 29. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 Women s College World Series.
