3 SUMMARY A highly chargeable induced polarization zone has been defined in a diorite-monzonite and its surroundings. The chargeable zone is contained within a magnetically homogeneous unit. The geophysical mapping of the grid outlines regions of distinctive character. INTROD,UCT ION In 1982, as part of a regional survey in the Quesnel area of B.C., Newmont staked the Phantom 2 and 3 claims. A small airborne magnetic anomaly along a trend of intrusive-volcanic rocks was the target for staking. These characteristics are similar to that hosting ~ome$ QR gold deposit, of 1.2 million tons of 0.12 oz/ton Au. Two claims of 24 units total, using the modified grid method, were staked on June 25 and on September 11, Newmont personnel J. A. Turner and D. Bohme examined the property in A total of 21 days were spent by crews headed by J. Turner, carrying out the following work: 9.8 km of linecutting, 9.8 km of magnetic, and 10.5 km of induced polarization and resistivity surveys were done by contractors. The results of these surveys are presented. Trenching of anomalies was by backhoe. PROPERTY DESCRIPTION The claims covered in this report are recorded in the Cariboo Mining Division. They comprise two modified grid claims, 24 units total. Claim Units Record Date Record Number Phantom 2 8 Phantom 3 16 Sept. 22, 1982 July 23, 1982 LOCATION AND ACCESS (Fig I, 2) The Phantom claims are located along an old logging road that runs to Benson Lake on map sheet 93B/16E, 25 kilometers south east of

6 L Quesnel in central British Columbia. Access is via the Barkerville highway #26 thence by logging road to the claims. The logging roads make all areas of the property quite accessible. PHYSIOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE I I The claims lie on a very gentle rise where the elevation changes from 3200 to 3400 feet above sea level. One creek, Left Creek, crosses the property and flows northerly into the Swift River. Phantom Lake occurs in the north western area of the claims. Most of the area was logged off ten and thirteen years ago and is now overgrown by a few pine and balsam, but mostly alder and small berry bushes. The only outcrop is in the north east corner and on the southern border area of the claims. Glacial till and minor fluvial deposits cover approximately 70% of the claims. Glacial direction shown by one esker, is approximately north west. The 1 Phantom claims lies within the Cariboo Climatic Belt; summer temp- Z I eratures range from 15-25O and there is little rain fall. Snow I *c lasts from November to May. HISTORY There is no evidence of any previous geologic work having been done on the property. No showings are recorded on the B.C. Mineral Inventory Map 93B. The only work done in the area was logging and road building done in 1967 and The claims were staked in July and September 1982, and were covered by geochemical and geophysical grids in the same year. GENERAL GEOLOGY The area of interest is underlain by a north westerly striking sequence of mixed sediments, intrusives and volcanis of Triassic age. They are known as the Quesnel River Group. The most recent mapping of sheet 93B by the G.S.C. is by Tipper (1959), but he did not map the area of the claims. Campbell (1978) has mapped the adjoining sheet, 93A, and the geology of the claims is largely projected from there. The surficial geology was mapped by Tipper (1971) in map 1290A.
7 4c PROPERTY GEOLOGY (Fig 3) About 709 of the claim group is underlain by overburden which is entirely glacial tills and fluvial gcavels. Thickness of overburden varies from less than 1 metre to greater than 10 metres. Most of the geologic interpretation is based on geology seen in trenches and exposures located to the north of the claims. The geology on the property is mapped as augite porphyry flows; in the north east corner an overlying Tertiary basalt is found. The central part of the grid is underlain by diorite-monzonite and tuffs and argillite; all units are part of the Triassic Quesnel River Group. SURVEY COVERAGE AND DATA PRESENTATION - 2 IP Profiles, Maps MR, MC, IP, IPC, IPR The 9750 m of grid line was surveyed with a Geometrics G-816 proton precession magnetometer. The 781 readings of the earth's L magnetic field were taken at 12% m intervals on the grid. All readings are corrected to the established base station readings. Induced polarization and resistivity surveys are with the pole-dipole electrode array, and two electrode spacings. On 600 m of line le, a 25 m array with 23 readings of each of n = 1, 2, 3; on 1450 m of line 2E a 25 m array with 57 readings of each of n = 1, 2; and on 8425 m of the grid a 50 m array with 166 and 164 readings at n = 1 and n = 2 respectively, were surveyed. The IP transmitter was an Elliot Model 15A operating on a basic timing of 2 seconds. The receiver was the Crone IP receiver, measuring the IP decay curves in standard Newmont units, expressed in milli- seconds. Field data are on maps MR and IP. on maps MC, IPR, and IPC. Contoured field results are GEOPHYSICAL INTERPRETATION - Map GP i A scan of the magnetic contour map in conjuction with known geology and IP leads to subjectively picking seven distinct mag-

11 netic areas. Area A exhibits higher magnetic field values with low chargeability. This magnetic area approaches the region of the airborne magnetic high, Area B shows moderate but shor't halfwidth magnetic relief. Area C is a region of low magnetic field values and low relief. The magnetically anomalous region D is contained within C. Area E is of higher values and relief than its neighbouring region. Area F is the area of lowest magnetic field and relief. Area G is a region of magnetic heterogeneity that defines the southern boundary for Area C. The induced polarization survey gives two readily identifiable anomalous regions. In the southern portion, anomaly X falls within that portion of the grid which is magnetically flat, and is mapped as diorite-monzonite and tuffs and argillite. It is surrounded by a halo of moderate to low chargeability, extending well out into the augite porphyry, Anomaly Y is covered by basalts. The resistivity map is best used to help in mapping geology. The paucity of outcrop makes it difficult to assign resistivities to individual rock units. However, we can note two regions. A high apparent resi.stivity is found in the south west. It coincides, in part, with the chargeability anomaly. A zone of low apparent resistivity strikes west from chargability anomaly Y, and suggests that the cause for the high chargeability may not be the same as the cause for the low resistivity.
