2 1. Type of Project: Reservoir APPENDIX E Groveland Avenue Levee Data Compilation 2. USACE Description: The Groveland Avenue Levee site (DPLV01) extends between Groveland Avenue and the Des Plaines River to the BNSF Railroad in Riverside, IL. This would be constructed with approximately 1,500 feet of SSP with a top elevation of 618 feet. In addition, the street Park Place would be raised along a 700 foot stretch which affects Groveland Ave for 550 feet and Lincoln Ave for 200 feet. 3. Description of Research Results AECOM investigated the following resources for potential information with the results as follows: Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS): AECOM performed web based research on the Illinois State Water Survey and Illinois State Geological Society. Using their interactive GIS website, AECOM identified five nearby water well logs. The information from the website is included in Attachment E.4.1. Landowner: No landowner provided information was available for this site. According to the USACE, the Groveland Levee is the same location as the Section 14, Riverside USACE project. The basic premise of that project was that an old soil berm had seepage related issues so the riverside slope was cleared of vegetation and a two foot thick clay blanket was installed. Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT): No information was available from IDOT for the project site. Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR): No information was available on the project site from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Reconnaissance Photographs: AECOM performed a site visit to photograph the site features. The photographs which were taken are included in Attachment E Subsurface Explorations AECOM performed two soil borings at the project site as discussed below. a. Boring Locations* Boring** Coordinates*** Surface Boring Date Drilled Borehole Northing (ft) Easting (ft) Elevation (ft) + Depth (ft) Status DP /25/11 Backfilled DP /25/11 Backfilled *: All surveying information based on survey completed by AECOM. 3 **: All soil borings performed by Strata Earth Services, LLC ***: Based on NAD 83, Illinois State Plane East + : Based on NAVD 88 b. Subsurface Conditions Overall, the borings performed for the Groveland Avenue Levee evaluation were dissimilar and are discussed separately below. Boring DP Beginning from the ground surface, the soil conditions at this boring are as follows: Topsoil: A 0.7 foot thick layer of black organic topsoil was observed beginning from the ground surface. Fill: Non engineered fill was observed between 0.7 feet to 5 feet below the ground surface. The fill consisted of silty clay with trace fine to coarse sand and a topsoil seam at the 5 foot depth. The fill was hard with calibrated penetrometer values of 5.25 to 5.5 tsf. Silty Clay: Silty clay with trace amounts of fine sand (USCS:CL) was observed between 5 and 17.5 feet below the ground surface with the exception of a 3 foot thick layer of silt and sand (USCS: ML, SP SM) between 10 and 13 feet below the ground surface. The layer was generally hard with calibrated penetrometer values of 5.25 to 5.5 tsf, except a portion of the clay from 7.5 to 10 feet was of medium consistency with a calibrated penetrometer value of 0.5 tsf. Bedrock: A layer of bedrock was inferred from 17.5 feet to the boring termination depth of 20 feet based on split spoon sampler refusal and the behavior of the rock bit during drilling. Boring DP Beginning from the ground surface, the soil conditions at this boring are as follows: Topsoil: A 0.7 foot thick layer of black organic topsoil was observed beginning from the ground surface. Fill: Non engineered fill was observed between 0.7 feet to 7.5 feet below the ground surface. The fill consisted of silty clay with trace fine to coarse sand, coal pieces, and cinders. The fill was hard with calibrated penetrometer values of 5.25 to 5.5 tsf. Silt/Sand: Sandy and silty soils (USCS: SM, SP SM, ML) with trace amounts of fine gravel (USCS:CL) were observed between 7.5 and 25 feet below the ground surface with the exception of a 0.8 foot thick layer of silty clay (USCS: CL) between 8.7 and 9.5 feet below the ground surface. This layer ranged from very loose to very dense with SPT N values ranging from 1 bpf to 58 bpf, with density generally increasing with depth. Silty Clay: A layer of silty clay with trace amounts of sand and fine gravel (USCS: CL) was observed between 25 feet and the boring termination depth of 30.5 feet. This stratum was hard with SPT N values of 73 to greater than 100 blows per foot. APPENDIX E: Groveland Avenue Levee Page 2

4 c. Groundwater Conditions The groundwater observations discussed below were made at the project site at the time of drilling. Groundwater level fluctuations may occur with time and seasonal change due to variations in precipitation, evaporation, and surface water runoff. Groundwater was observed at 12 feet below the ground surface while sampling boring DP Groundwater was observed at a depth of 7.5 feet while sampling and 11 feet after completion of boring DP Engineering Properties: It is AECOM s understanding that the USACE intends to use the soil boring and laboratory testing data obtained from the investigation described in this report to perform engineering analysis for the project site. Given the variability in soil conditions observed in both the borings and the laboratory testing, AECOM recommends that the USACE use extreme caution in the selection of soil properties. Additional explorations and laboratory testing may be warranted if critical areas of particular concern are identified by USACE. The following sections illustrate the range of soil properties which were obtained from the laboratory testing for the site: Soil Property Dry density (pcf) (USCS: CL soils) Unconfined compressive strength (tsf) (USCS: CL soils) Minimum Recorded Value Maximum Recorded Value Average Value 94.5 (from 1 data point) 0.87 (from 1 data point) ATTACHMENTS E.1: Boring Location Plan E.2: Boring Logs E.3: Lab Testing Results E.4: Research Data E.4.1: Illinois State Water Survey Data E.5: Site Reconnaissance Photographs APPENDIX E: Groveland Avenue Levee Page 3
